Our family traveled to beautiful St. Croix for the week after Christmas and spent a half day sailing in the waters off the northside of the island with Captain Dee and her first mate Mason. We met them on the boardwalk and were welcomed on board with a smile and a helping hand. We quickly got underway and began to learn firsthand about St. Croix, sailing and her ship, the Zulu. Captain Dee has sailed all over the world but she came to St Croix as an environmental educator. She knows the island well and loved to share her passion for sailing with my three college age kids. Instead of heading to Buck Island where there were big crowds, we headed to the waters off Green Cay. We swam from the boat outfitted from her stock with a snorkel and fins. We snorkeled for nearly an hour led by the first mate Mason who helped us identify many different species of fish and other sea creatures. When we climbed back on board, Captain Dee had a healthy spread ready for us that the whole family thoroughly enjoyed! (We even ended up swapping some recipes!!) Our trip back to the dock was a relaxing sail in favorable winds during which we learned so much more about the area and the people who live there. We all completely enjoyed our day and would definitely go out exploring with Captain Dee and her crew anytime!!
