Buck Island makes for a great day trip from St. Croix. It has one of the most spectacular beaches in the Caribbean and some of the best snorkeling you will find anywhere. There are several tour companies that offer trips to the island...our favorite is Big Beards.

It is a forty minute drive from Fredricksted to Christensted and then another 40 minute boat ride with Caribbean Sea Adventures and Capt. Miles and crew to the national park at Buck Island. Being a scuba diver I was a little apprehensive about doing a snorkel tour but was ever so pleasantly surprised once we got to the snorkel site. This is an awesome spot for snorkeling in 8-20 feet of super clear water with the most beautiful array of coral and fish you will see in the Caribbean. The Capt. and crew are most accommodating and give everyone a thorough briefing on the site along with all the rules and regulations that come with visiting a national protected dive site. Water and soda drinks are provided in route to the snorkel spot. Once there, crew members give any additional snorkeling instruction required for first time snorkelers and they also take you on the guided water tour through the park. Once the tour has been completed, you are free to snorkel on your own around the colorful reef. Fish and coral abound and there is truly an awesome array of underwater life to see. On the return trip a super rum punch is provided while folks talk of their underwater experiences.
I would highly recommend this tour for families and people who are not certified divers but have some swimming experience and would love to see the amazing underwater life that abounds in this great national park.

The island it selfs looks like it has some very great views but we didn't have time to get past the beach. The reef itself is still recovering from what I was told was Hurricane Hugo back in '89. The current can be very strong and you need to be careful because some the coral comes pretty close to the surface and it can be hard to finding your way back out

The snorkling was pretty good, but the coral on most of the reef is dying. The fish swimming around were great and we saw a barracuda and some other beautiful blue fish. The reef itself was great, but be careful if you venture outside the reef. The current was pretty strong and you do not realize how far it takes you as you swim back to the boat

We went out with Big Beards with a small group (14 people) for the full day tour - 6-7 hours for $99.00.

We had a great time. At the stop at the beach on the island, we saw a sting ray. When we went around to the reef, we were blown away by the coral, the fish, everything!

The last stop was on a beach on St. Croix for a cook out. It turned out to be an unexpected pleasure - everyone talked with each other while watching mongooses play in the forest behind where we sitting. It turned out to just be a very enjoyable adventure.

The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend them!
