After viewing excellent reviews of The Beachhouse Restaurant, we, along with friends, ventured out on a lovely saturday evening on Provo. As 14-year seasonal residents of the Turks and Caicos, we've enjoyed a surge in culinary offerings at all levels in recent years. This being one of the newest, we were anxious to try and report. No question the food is very good, which should be the case with this world-class chef and attendent high prices. Unfortunately, the service level is at the opposite end of the scale. The evening began rather strangely with the manager coming to our table and greeting us with "What can I do to make you happy"? A rather open-ended question to which I replied in jest, "comp our meal"!. Okay, we move on. One waiter brought water. Another waiter took our drink orders. Time went by. 25 minutes later the drinks showed up. No, the bar wasn't packed and neither was the restaurant. Just a lot of wait staff mllling about, seemingly with very little direction. Not a great sign. First mis-step.. I expect a drink order to arrive in less than 10 minutes or I get cranky. English skills and server experience don't seem to be a pre-requisite for getting hired here which is generally NOT the case anymore in most higher end restaurants here on Provo. It was a challenge for the four of us to comprehend and have several of our waiters understand us. Then they read everything back to us! This isn't a diner!. Ugh. Water glasses didn't get refilled without asking. Appetizers took 30 minutes, though all good. Main courses took longer than that. Filet fine, (which waiter said would take 45 minutes to prepare..huh?? It's not a roast!! ) mahi fine, rib-eye, (12 oz.? don't think so, thin, and cooked medium, NOT medium rare..but not worth sending back and extending the evening another 30 minutes. We expressed our displeasure to the manager with the amateurish service, inattentiveness and slowness in delivery. He apologized and comped us a round of drinks. We passed on dessert, and he offered after-dinner drinks, but declined due driving home. Instead he reversed the 10% "service" charge on the bill, which was the right thing to do.
Not exactly a relaxing 3 1/2 hour evening for any of us. Plenty of fine alternatives on the island these days at this price point. Hopefully The Beachhouse will get its act together soon.
