“Nice Relaxing Week in Paradise at Lovely Quaint Luxurious Beach House”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

Just returned from a wonderful week at the Beach House. This hotel is very quaint and reminds me of a beach house in Montauk/New England. It is very quiet and relaxing here and only 21 rooms so if you are looking for action and night life there are many other options.

ROOM: We stayed on first floor oceanfront room named "Chilled". No room numbers here just names which is a nice touch. This is a beautiful, big suite type room. While this was considered an "oceanfront room", I would not consider it that because the grass outside blocks the view of beach/ocean. If you step outside on your patio you can see the ocean but not what I consider oceanfront for sure! This room did provide amazing sunset views though. I would recommend a 2nd floor oceanfront room as it looks like that would have the best ocean views. The pull-out sofa bed in this unit was very comfortable. The only negative is there is a sewer smell outside this unit every day which was unpleasant.

THE BEACH: Grace Bay beach is one of the best in the world and the beach at this resort is stunning! The sand feels like powder on your feet. The water is an unbelievable turquoise/aqua and totally see-through to the bottom. This really is one of the best places in the world if you are a beach person like I am. The beach chairs provided at the beach house were extremely comfortable and looked like the best of any resort. There is a reef very close (on the right) of beach house. We were told the snorkeling here was exceptional. We brought our own rafts and the resort provides boards and kayaks to use. There is no fighting for chairs and having to wake up at 6 to get a beach chair. The only issue we had is the lack of communication between the weekend beach attendant who assigned us our chairs and Roger the weekday beach attendant who was unaware but did straighten it out for us.

THE FOOD: All of the food at the Beach House was delicious! Our package came with $20pp towards breakfast and 1 chef's-tasting dinner. My friend really enjoyed her eggs benedict/omlette during the week and i enjoyed the scrambled eggs, french toast and the bagel was so good and that is a big compliment coming from a New Yorker!
Dinners were pricey but exceptional! You can't go wrong with anything you order. The service we received was great with our favorite being Myra who always went over and above to be sure we had what we needed at all times. She was also very helpful when making menu choices.

THE OFFICE: The girls in the office were very helpful. Tomeka & Vanessa were great and Judith was exceptional going out of her way for us during the week. When we were checking out and looking for a certain salt that had been on the table to bring back home with us, Judith made up a special bottle for us which was very much appreciated.

TAXI'S: We did not rent a car during the week so relied on taxi's to take us to dinners. Antoinette and her husband Leonard Missick were very nice. On our first night, Antoinette took us to and from the hotel to grocery store. She even came in to show us where everything was and did not charge us extra. The other nice driver we had was Solomon. The girls in office know exactly who they are if you have a preference like we did.

CASINO: There was a small casino nearby which we went to on our last night. There were a few slots and tables and i was lucky enough to win $1200 on the Wizard of Oz slot machine. The paid me right away :-)

Overall, it was a fantastic, relaxing vacation and we cannot wait to return to the Beach House and I would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Choose 2nd floor oceanfront.

The Good:

The beach is lovely and direct access from the rooms, the property is calm, the spa massage from Sharon was perfect, wonderful housekeeping team, spacious 1 bedroom "beach house" with lovely bath amenities, day bed on porch was so wonderful, free wi-if, beach toys, comfortable beach chairs, helpful and wonderful front desk staff.

The Bad:

No room service, very expensive restaurant with no light bites/ snack menu, no beach bar or restaurant, we were not even allowed to order food at the restaurant to take back to our room, no stove in the kitchen, no sponges or paper towels in the kitchen, no bath tub in the 1 bedrooms - only a simple stand up shower, horrible beach attendant who sits on his chair and gives excuses why he cannot help, broken high chair in the restaurant (it was the only one available).

Traveling with a toddler without room service or a room stove was stressful. Otherwise it truly was a relaxing and wonderful trip so if the items in the "bad" list above does not scare you off, then you will probably love The Beach House.

Just returned from a 5 day family vacation at the Beach House. The youngest "child" is 29 years old. If location and quiet is what you want then this is place for you. If you are accustomed to service and amenities then this is not YET the place for you. It does have potential, though.

Location is uber fabulous. Beach access and views are great.

Now for what they need to do to be considered a boutique/luxury property:

1. Beach chairs, trendy yet not flexible. Look good, don't serve the purpose. As adults we know that extended exposure to the sun is damaging. These lounge chairs are nearly impossible to move as they are really two chairs. The umbrellas are flimsy and they can only be placed at the head of the chaises so we had to sit covered up from the waist down and when the sun moved we had to cover up even more. Each room gets the appropriate number of chaises but if you have a fifth person in your 2 bedroom suite they get an old, cruddy chaise...but it moves...though it doesn't get an umbrella.

2. Bathrooms. Towels were so rough that I felt as if I was exfoliating every time I dried myself. Toilet paper and tissues were the same. Soap amenities were okay but even though their "signature" amenities come with a lotion you must pay for it separately. I have never been to a beach resort that didn't provide body lotion. Felt ripped off by this. A bad feeling right away the first afternoon.

3. Breakfast was very good and our "package" provided us with a $20 credit each morning for the five of us. Problem is that after juice and coffee not a single item on the breakfast entree list kept us to our credit. And on top of that, though we had five $20 credits which equals $100 most of the time only four of us showed up. In reality that would be great as four of us could eat for $100 but they would only allow the credit for those that showed up!!!! We had to argue the ridiculousness of this with the front desk. Also the presentation changed on a daily basis. Ordering lox and bagel, one day we got 3 little pieces. Another day we got more than we could eat.

4. The suite was spacious but bare. Since there were five of us we had to drag a chair outside on our patio every day as they only had seating for four. The table in the suite was small and could only seat four. The flat screen TV was small and it was difficult for all 5 of us to see it as the sofa bed remained open throughout our stay. Lighting was poor at best, especially in the bathrooms. There were no TVs in the bedrooms but normally that would not have bothered us except we were there during the Boston marathon bombings and were somewhat glued to the TV when we were in the suite.

5. The telephone service didn't work at all. Couldn't call the hospitality/front desk for anything. Normally not a problem but we were on the third floor and there are only steps.

6. With our "package" we were entitled to a beach picnic but there were no tables on the beach so we opted to have it in the restaurant. This picnic, much to our dismay, did not include a single beverage. We had informed them that we would be taking our beach picnic at the restaurant and they agreed we could. They gave us everything in styrofoam containers and expected us to eat out of those containers. No plates. We had a bottle of champagne that we intended to open at our "picnic" but because we were sitting at the restaurant they wanted to charge us a corkage fee to use their glasses. The restaurant had only 3 tables ordering lunch at the time so what was the problem here?

7. Ice, an amenity that for us is a necessity at cocktail time, required a trip down 3 flights of stairs (phones didn't work) even though there was a full sized refrigerator with an ice maker, which was not hooked up. No ice machines either so we had to go to the bar to get it. Also, no kitchen towels or dish soap to clean up after ourselves and...if you leave a dirty plate in the sink it becomes infested with ants, lots of 'em.

8. When I travel for a vacation I do not expect to be told "no". I expect hospitality and service to mean, "how can we make this happen for you". Don't expect this type of treatment at the Beach House, yet.

Room Tip: The third floor suites have an ocean view but only if you are standing at the solid concrete half wa...

Within minutes of our arrival we were caught off guard by other guests' irritation and outright vitriol about the Beach House; everyone we chatted with seemed visibly annoyed and disappointed. We soon understood the basis of these complaints, and I think it really boils down to poor expectation management. It's clear the property has invested a great deal of money on branding and advertising, with a cutesy 'no room numbers' and 'no socks allowed' tagline, cute phrases and proprietary toiletries- which are excellent, by the way. But, more importantly, they position themselves as ultra guest-focused, describing an attention to detail and care for their guests that's not necessarily evident in reality. Therein lies the disconnect. The rooms, while fairly spartan with plenty of Ikea touches (literally), are fine and the property is very well located and generally well maintained. We were lucky enough to have a ground-floor room directly in front of the beach with access that was truly fantastic. The beach is beautiful and the Turks and Caicos sea is second to none. But it's clear that the "luxury" and "pampering" component mentioned throughout Beach House web site and materials is not part of the reality: at arrival- hot, sweaty and tired- I was told "we could wait" until another car arrived to take us to our room (thanks), instead of having someone from the staff quickly snap up our very few bags (we travel light) and walk us 100 feet to our room. I was then told we needed to walk down the road for any kind of small snack because the restaurant was closed and the bar had no food. Does this flight not arrive at the same time every single day with people who probably feel the same way? Add a snacks menu at the bar! Leave an apple in the room! Again: lack of all of that attention to detail they gush about in their materials. Later, a request for a tiny bit of honey for our tea (which we made in our room) was met with a snarky response that this would cost five dollars (!). A bartender is available at the bar only in the late afternoon, and while the available wait staff try their best to make drinks, it's limited at best- I had to walk one eager but clueless waitress step-by-step through the process of making me a Dark and Stormy, then I got to tip her. Breakfast each day predictably took at LEAST an hour, budgeting both for prep time and the multiple order mistakes that happened every single morning without fail. However, I should also mention that the same restaurant produces some of the most delicious dinners I've ever eaten. It still takes a ridiculous amount of time to get your meal, but the food at the Beach House restaurant, particularly the Chef's Tasting Menu, is fantastic, and the dinner staff is terrific.

The beach "staff"- which basically is one very bored guy in a beach chair- blatantly couldn't be bothered to help find our mysterious specifically designated beach chairs. No idea why room-designated chairs at a 21 room hotel would be necessary, it's more a hassle than anything else, but he then told us we needed wander back and forth on the beach and find our an umbrella with our room tag on it (really?), while he stayed in his chair and finished his nap. I am not exaggerating.

Again, none of this would presumably be a problem with a hotel that promoted itself to be exactly what it is: a mid-level property with excellent beach access and an outstanding restaurant. I suggest management either consider piping down with the superlatives or take a trip to, say, the Cobbler's Cove property in Barbados and see what real attention to detail and service looks like.

Room Tip: Definitely focus on the beach front rooms, ideally at ground level.

We stayed in the Dazzled Room. It had amazing views of the water. The room was extremely clean and was kept clean throughout the visit. It is furnished very much like a typical beach house. The patio has a table as well as a day bed to lay on. They almost got this hotel right but there were a few things that they need to improve to make it perfect.
The bed was horribly uncomfortable, cheaply made. The pillows were the same. They should invest in down pillows. I ended up sleeping on the couch and it was the only good night sleep I got there. The bed was so hard my body would go numb. They need to replace with a pillow top matress. The bathroom should have been upgraded a bit better. The sink top was of poor quality and the toilet looked 20 years old. The shower was great. The TV is too small. We got a good deal on the room since we booked in April, if I had payed full price I would have been mad.
Other than that the stay was great. Friendly staff and great cleaning staff. The beach location cannot be beat. The beach chairs are incredibly comfortable and it is a nice stretch of beach. This is just 2 hotels down from the Gansevort so if you like to party that is the place to be Friday night. You will have take a taxi everywhere on the island though which runs about 10-15 bucks.

We love this place! We came here with our daughter-five. Rooms are beautiful and specious, furniture beautiful and quite child friendly. Rooms are cleaned twice a day. Shower could be improved. Food/ restaurant is at the high end when it comes to prices and is excellent so I guess u pay for what u get. Spa is as big as it should be to have privacy and all the attention dedicated to you. Lady at the Spa, Sharon, well I would be happy to take her home. Prices acceptable. The beach is amazing with enough space for everybody, comparing to the other hotels around. All the personnel at the Beach House is trying their best and we got a very quick response to everything we needed. We are here a week and one more to go and we don't regret for booking two weeks.

Room Tip: sea view, first floor

Lovely: First, I want to begin by echoing other comments that we had read on TripAdvisor prior to arriving at this property. This hotel is positioned in one of the most beautiful spots imaginable. The beach is wide, the sand is soft and white and the water is a gorgeous shade of light blue. With my family, I walked up and down the beach and the Beach House is definitely well-positioned on Grace Bay. The view from the ocean front suite was spectacular. In my opinion, it is worth spending the extra money to stay ocean front. The beach is not crowded and we were there during high season.

Location: The resort was about 15 minutes from the airport. It was an easy taxi ride and the taxi cost about $10 per person. It is a beach front property and looks just as pictured on the website. To the right with your back to the ocean is the expensive but lovely Stelle Restaurant. To the left, Cafe Somewhere. The snorkel boat picked us up right in front of the resort as did the parasailing boat. We borrowed the free resort bikes and rode (up a hill and across a busy highway) to the nearby local grocery store. On site was a terrific restaurant that is part of the resort. I do not think there was a better beach front location on Grace Bay.

Lacking Basic Services: Towels, robes, restaurant service were all issues during our stay. The people at the resort were very friendly and we never experienced any rude behavior but the attitude did not seem to be one of taking care of guests. The beach attendant (Roger) was friendly but did not seem motivated or enthusiastic about his work. Specifically, some of the lounge chairs had tags to reserve them for some suites but occupants of other suites were on their own to find their own seating. This wasn't a problem even during the peak week before Easter but it did strike me as odd. We were staying in an ocean front two bedroom suite - the most expensive option in the resort - but no effort was made to ensure that our suite was associated with reserved lounge chairs on the beach. In addition, Roger was not interested in taking out the little Hobbie Cat sailboat thought this option was offered to us as one of the resort amenities that we should take advantage of during our stay. After we did convince and persuade Roger to take the boat out, we heard other guests remark that he had not had the boat out in over a week. During the last two days of our stay, the paddle boards were not out - the wind had picked up and this might have been the reason. On the last night, one of us saw a rat in the kitchen area of our two bedroom suite, Enchanted. This sighting occurred in the middle of the night and cast a bit of a damper on the rest of our stay.

Conclusion: I thought the Turks and Caicos was one of the most lovely destinations that I have ever visited and I look forward to returning - especially to have another chance to snorkel at the barrier reef!! I would not consider staying, however, at the Beach House again and, I am sorry to say, I would not recommend this boutique hotel to friends or family at least until reports of the service have improved. I have given it four stars overall but that has to do with location, location, location. It was an incredible view and was on a lovely spot of beach!!! We still loved our vacation and had an amazing time. It will go down as a memorable family vacation but the rat does leave a bad taste...

Room Tip: Ocean front rooms offer a spectacular view. It appeared to me that the second floor ocean front sui...
