“Amazing time at the Sands, didn't want to leave!”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

My husband and I were at the Sands 10/27 for 8 days on our first trip to Turks and Caicos. Check in was easy and the rum punch was great. On the way to our room I was telling my husband it may be small as we just booked an ocean front studio however when we walked in we were pleasantly surprised to be in an amazing 1 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath, full kitchen and huge balcony over looking the ocean and pool. It was so spacious and clean and the views of the water was just perfect. Having the full kitchen and the washer/dryer was ideal.

The pools at the Sands were wonderful. We only went in the one on the beach once as it was a bit more crowded, but I loved the two pools in the middle with the connecting rivers and waterfalls. It was beautiful, never crowded and so peaceful. The hot tub was super hot and I couldn't handle the temp but my hubby loved it. He thought the pools were too cold but I thought they were perfect. =) Another great perk was the hammocks in Coconut Grove. So nice to relax there. But the best part of this whole resort is the beach!! For the first half of our trip getting a seat under the umbrellas was easy but second half of our trip it got a little busier and you had to be out there early, before noon or so. We still always found a spot under the shade though. It never felt too crowded at the beach though. The wonderful workers would be out setting up chairs and digging holes for umbrellas if needed. The excursion desk guys were great as well. We could rent snorkel gear as often as needed. They took us out on the Hobie Cat to which was fun. They also set us up on all our tours which was convenient. There were a lot of fish right in front of the hotel and we saw a sting ray as well. I personally loved seeing the two cats that would walk around the resort and they were friendly.

We had one lunch and one dinner at Hemingway's and drinks here and there. We had the burger, steak, chicken sandwich and fish tacos and it was all good. The drinks are made strong and delicious. The hotel is walking distance to the Salt Mills shopping area and a few restaurants along the way. We ate over there a few times. We loved taking the bikes to the grocery store. It takes about 10 minutes and you can fill the basket on the bike and the handle bars with a good amount of groceries. We went 3 times! You have to have the bikes back by dusk so its nice to use them in the morning for shopping runs. There are also restaurants walking distance on the beach too. Bay Bistro and Mango Reef are very close.

All in all it was an amazing trip and we were trying to plan when we would come back and hope to stay at the Sands again. From the front desk, to wait staff, to housekeeping to the excursion desk and the taxi drivers, everyone we spoke with was so nice.

On the last day before we left for the airport, we did a couples massage at Spatropique right there at the Sands which was very nice to relax in between check out and the ride to the airport. The only downfall is it was pretty loud near the fitness area, one kid screaming and a man talking loudly on the phone right outside our massage room but one of the therapists went out to tell them to quiet down so that was nice of them to do.

We can't wait to come back to Turks and Caicos and I think going in the off season again was a great decision!

Room Tip: Building 3 was closest to the beach and had great ocean views

We researched all the hotels on Grace Bay and went with The Sands since we got a great deal for 9 days this past August. I had read mixed reviews on TripAdvisor and Oyster so I wasn't sure exactly to expect...

We booked a studio with ocean views as no ocean front rooms were available when we booked. On oyster.com the review mentioned that in order to see the ocean from some of the ocean view rooms you had to squint to see it. From that and room tips from TripAdvisor reviews I requested a ocean view room in building 3 on the 3rd floor (top floor).

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted with welcome drinks and upgraded to a one bedroom suite with ocean views in building 3 on the 2nd floor. While the staff checked if they had availability on the 3rd floor in building 3 we enjoyed another complimentary welcome punch. We were told our 2nd floor one bedroom suite was closer to the beach/ocean than the 3rd floor option and had a better layout. We checked the 3rd floor room vs. the 2nd and opted for the second floor room.

The one bedroom ocean view suite we had was very close to the ocean front rooms with an excellent view of the beach/ocean. Our suite had recently been renovated with stainless steel appliances, two flat screen tvs, and modern accessories. The TVs also had more than an adequate amount of American channels to watch. The wrap around balcony had sliding doors out from the bedroom, the living room, and the dining area. The suite had two bathrooms, a full kitchen, living room, dining area and washer and dryer. The screened in balcony really kept the mosquitos out. The balcony in our suite was our very favorite part of the room. It was the length of the suite and featured two lounging areas and an outside table and chairs. We made use of it multiple times a day because it really was a second room in and of itself!

We were only two people but this suite would also really suit the needs of a family who needs space and especially one that plans to save money or prefers cooking some of their own meals. The hotel provides paid shuttles to the two grocery stores as well as an option to use their bikes free of charge to go there. Lastly, the hotel does have a convenience store on the property that we bought water at when we were in a bind. However, the prices are extremely expensive.

The property has a few pools and a hot tub that actually gets hot which was a welcome change to the hot tubs we have experienced in the Caribbean. The main pool by the beach was mostly frequented by children and while we took dips in it we didn't make much use of it.

The breathtaking beach is just steps away and we always took chairs under the palapas. Additionally, we were happy with the free rafts and floaties provided by the hotel. We spent the majority of our days camped out at this gorgeous beach. The Sands also has these amazing water chairs that we parked at the edge of the water often. The nicest thing about the stretch of beach that The Sands occupies is that is away from the crowds. As of now, there are no hotels to either side of the property so it feels like guests have their own private section of Grace Bay Beach to themselves. I hear that there are plans for a chain hotel to be built to the left of the hotel that would spoil the charm of being neighbor free. That said, I don't know how real these plans are.

The beach does have drink service but there is just one waiter so don't expect super quick and overly attentive service like at The Gansevoort Hotel on the west side. The beach lounge chairs really need to be updated. They are very basic and old with no padding for comfort. These no frill lounge chairs also could be cleaned and at least have the broken ones replaced. Our favorite beach activity The Sands provided free of charge were the Hobie Cat rides that the amazing beach captains could take you out on to explore the ocean up and down Grace Bay Beach.

The Hemingway Restaurant on site is right on the beach. I was disappointed by the Black Bean Soup and the Chocolate Cake but the Fish Tacos were something to write home about. The bartenders at Hemingway make a mean Rasta Punch and don't skimp on the alcohol.

The front desk staff and the concierge were extremely helpful and knowledgable. Our concierge booked our snorkel tour with Caicos Adventure and was able to get a 10% discount that no one else on the tour had. The beach staff was also able to get us a better deal on the parasailing price in front of our hotel for us as well as a few friends we met at the hotel.

We were tipped off that The Regent Palms (very luxurious with an amazing spa) was the sister hotel of The Sands and we could try and use the much nicer pools and beach cabanas there. Since it was low season we had no problem doing this a few times during the trip and it was well worth it.

I do need to point out that our ocean view one bedroom suite did overlook the public access road to the beach and public parking lot. It wasn't such an eyesore but the incoming and outgoing traffic and cars could be rather loud at times. We couldn't hear the noise at all from inside the suite but on the balcony it was a little disturbing. We were able to overlook it but I mention it as folks we met at the hotel were annoyed by it.

Overall, for the price The Sands was a steal. That said, our suite was recently renovated with major updates and that made a difference. I believe the grounds of property really need to be updated. I had read this when booking but was betting on the price/value outweighing that. Had we paid full price I would have been bothered by the grounds, pools, and hotel's beach offerings (not the beautiful beach itself) that need to be renovated especially in comparison to the nearby hotels.

We stayed at The Sands for 9 days and never tired of the beach, our suite, or the enormous screened in balcony. For the price and size of the one bedroom suites you cannot go wrong (just make sure to get an a renovated one). The staff is attentive and the privacy of this beach makes it very easy to recommend it as a very good option on Grace Bay Beach.

Room Tip: The ocean front and ocean view rooms in building 3 are the closet to the beach and have the least ob...

I have mixed feelings about this place:
when we arrived they had set us up in a 2 bedroom apartment that was supposed to be ocean view and was VERY far from the sea. we had to really spend almost an hour and be very stern to get upgraded to ocean front (of course we paid the difference) which is actually what we would think of as ocean view.
so beware...they told us that there are only studios and 1 bedrooms in the only building that's actually ocean front. since we had a 2 bedroom, we were in a building that's marked oceanfront but it's really ocean view. Our unit was 4302 and it's a great unit.

after that horrible start, the rest was mostly great:
1. the Hemingway restaurant is very good, but the one close by on the beach (about 2 minute walk on the beach to the left) is better. overall we had great meals.
2. the beach is fantastic and we found it to be the best stretch of beach around.
3. beach service was spotty at best both for drinks (which are not great) and umbrella.
4. the apartment was clean spotless every day. amazing cleaning crew, really the highlight of the house.
5. you have everything you need to cook some meals and there is a nice grocery store close by. walk there (less than 10 minutes) and ask the cashier to call a cab to go back!
6. unfortunately, the hot water was brownish...it started orange but after running for a long time it became just a little yellow. we used mostly cold water and did all the cooking with mineral water.

the question remains: once we complained they proposed 2 rooms to us both of which were substantial upgrades. we decided to take the better one and pay the difference but why did they give us a bad "oceanview" room if they had a much better one available? poor service.

overall I recommend it because of the nice unit, the beach and the cleanliness!

Room Tip: ask for building 3 or 4.

Thank you for the feedback. All rooms that have a view of the ocean are considered ocean view. It does not necessarily mean you will be close to the ocean. I am glad to know that you enjoyed your new room. I have passed along your other concerns to be address immediately by department heads.

So far the food is great. Staff is friendly and is always there to help you. The hot tub is amazing, even when it is raining. You have to walk to white sandy beach and enjoy the sights and endulgle in some kind of tour or just enjoy the sights. There is many restaurants close to all the hotel that you can either walk to or take a taxi. Great place and will be coming back.

We recently spent five nights at the Sands; our first time staying somewhere other than the Turks and Caicos Club (now known as The Beach House). The Sands is located on a nice stretch of Grace Bay; close to Ports of Call, but not walled-in by resorts on each side of the property. We stayed in a one-bedroom oceanview suite that was spacious with a well-equipped kitchen and large screened-in deck. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We were in unit 3210 which is the building closest to the beach and had a good view of Grace Bay.

I stayed at the Sands with my wife last week and we had a great time. We stayed in a studio suite which was more than enough room. It had a couch & tv area, a kitchenette with a fridge and microwave, and a great outdoor balcony that lead to 1 of the 3 pools. It even included a washer & dryer which was unexpected. The room was also very clean.

If you are looking for beach time, you can't beat the location since Sands is right on the beach. They even have canoes, windsurfing and snorkeling equipment to use for free, and all 3 pools on the property were great. You can also find out about excursions like para-sailing, snorkeling trips, etc. at the towel station.

Hemingways is the on site restaurant and is good, but VERY pricey. I would suggest using the hotel's free bikes to take a ride to a store and stock up on beer/wine/liquor and maybe some food for breakfast/lunch.(The on site store is very expensive as well and there are much cheaper options close by.)

There are several other resorts within walking distance that have restaurants, and a small area with some shops and restaurants that you can walk to in 5-10 minutes or bike to in a few minutes, but other than that, there isn't much to do.

The entire staff was also very friendly.

I'm not sure that I would ever go back to T&C because I like places with a little more to do as far as activities and nightlife go (it didn't help that it was slow season) but if we did ever return, I would absolutely 100% stay at Sands.

Dear GeffG,

Thank you for taking the time to post your recent review. I was delighted to see how much you enjoyed your trip and stay with us. We appreciate your kind words about our staff, product and services. Our staff works hard each day to provide a great experience.

You are so right when you point out how nice and clean our rooms are, as well as noting all the other amenities and facilities we have to offer. Also, I am glad to know you enjoyed Hemingway’s, it is a local favorite and noted not only for its food and services, but for value as well. Though you really can’t go wrong with any food venue on the Island, you will find that Hemingway’s in comparison to similar quality restaurant’s menu prices, has very good value, and incidentally has not raised its menu prices in over 5 years.

You certainly pegged it right on the title of your survey. You noticed how peaceful and quiet Providenciales is and you are quite right about the atmosphere. Providenciales for us, is all about the rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. Recharging those batteries and soaking up that warm Caribbean sunshine. As for the night scene, Casa Blanca Casino for those high rollers - is a great place to start and there is some terrific all night dancing at Gansevoort. Beside all the great restaurants and bars on the Island, another fun and new place is Bugaloos….great live local music to kick up your heels.

We hope you return to TCI to come back and see us, and again thank you for your feedback.

Yours sincerely,

My family and I stayed at the Sands for 10 days in October. The hotel is beautiful and the beach is amazing. You can literally walk right out to the beach from the hotel. The grounds are well kept and clean. It was nice to use their bicycles and water sport toys whenever you like. With that being said, I do have a few complaints. I didn't feel like anyone we encountered at the property was very friendly. No one was really willing to go out their way for you or at times, even smile. I believe if you're staying at a higher end resort/hotel, the least you can do is smile. The room was also badly arranged. We had a nice large room, but it was full of furniture. We could not even move around without hitting a piece of furniture. After about the 5th day, it became really annoying. The shower was also stand up and had a shower curtain. So, when you're taking a shower, the shower curtain was stuck to you the whole time. I really don't think I would stay at this hotel again. The best I could give it was 3 stars.

With that being said, TCI is an amazing place. The diving and snorkeling is amazing. The water and sea life is like nothing I've ever seen. Everything is a little pricey, so be ready before you go. There is also a huge homeless dog issue. They are everywhere and it's really sad. We actually ended up taking one home with us. You can "rent" a puppy for the day to give it love at Potcake Place in Saltmills. They're doing a great thing there, check it out, donate.

For anyone that has to watch sports, there is a sports bar called Danny Buoys near Saltmills that had all the football games on and good food.

Dear TMB46,

Thank you for taking the time to post your recent review. We were happy to see how beautiful you found our resort, beach and grounds to be as well as how much you enjoyed the amenities offered.

We appreciated your kind comments you shared, but we are sorry to learn that we did not deliver the friendliness levels you expected. We will address this and your other concerns with our entire team and work to improve our customer service delivery.

Overall, we are delighted to know how much you enjoyed Providenciales, TCI – it is truly amazing in many ways spectacular from the beach to the diving.

As far as stray dogs are concerned, our Animal Welfare Committee operates 5 nights a week in varied areas on island. This will continue until such time as the majority of the stray animals are under control. Unfortunately the process is long one but the Department of Agriculture along with the AWC is hard at work every day and dedicated toward rectifying the feral dog problem as a priority for our entire country.

On October 27th they had16 members from Pets without Vets for a one week spay/neuter program. These volunteers participate worldwide to provide a spay/neuter program along with ongoing educational for responsible pet ownership. And thank you from all of us for caring deeply about these animals and especially for adopting one as well.

We hope welcome you back to TCI and again thank you for your feedback.

Yours sincerely,
