We spent the first week of February at The Sands. Could not have been more pleased with our accomodations! Staff was friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed the convenience of Hemingways. Our two bedroom ocean view suite worked out perfectly. Still miss the screened in porch.

We just returned from a 10 day trip to TCI split between The Royal West Indies and The Sands. Both resorts are very nice and great family vacation spots.

The Sands was our 2nd stop on the Island and immediately when we pulled in we knew it was the perfect place. Greated by rum punch and a friendly knowledgable staff we were excited for the 2nd half of our trip. Our room was a ground level 1 bedroom suite which was the perfect size and had everythign we needed traveling with our 15 month old. The grounds were immaculate, safe and welcoming with sweeping pools and palm trees throughout. The beach was very nice and 75% of the people at this resort also had children from newborn through about 6 years old (school was not on break while we were here but I imagine lots of older children if it was). The open concept of the resort allows you to interact with others and create friendships with other people but still allowed privacy and a peaceful trip. The location of this resort is great as its about a 10 minute walk to town or 15 to the grocery store. (The onsite Grocery store is very pricey about 50% more for everything but you will still end up here for some drinks and other needs) Sands is also very close to about 5 other resorts which have great restaurants so you can try differet places without a taxi. The restaurant here was good but I did feel like they are in need of adding some new creative dishes for both lunch ad dinner if they want to keep their standing as a top choice on the beach. I also suggest a mid day happy hour to encourage more people into the restaurant/bar between lunch and dinner.
We look forward to returning to The Sands on our Next trip to TCI

The major difference between the Sands and the Royal West Indies is the Staff at the front Desk of the Sands is perfect, all over everything you need at the moment you need it while RWI felt a little overwhelmed. The other Major difference is the Sands is very wide open with few trees and privacy while RWI is much more private. Rooms were about the same, restaurants are about the same (no Happy Hour at Sands) and the pool was better at The Sands (RWI was too cold to swim much in Jan.) but the Beach/Ocean was slightly better at RWI

Great Island, Great Resort Choice for privacy & children

We spent an amazing week during Christmas break at The Sands. The condos are clean and the veranda is very well appreciated for having supper in family. Even if we were there during a high affluence period, the beach at the Sands was very calm and relaxing. The staff was also very nice and caring for us, especially one on them, John, who followed me the entire morning at the Providenciales hospital when I hurt my finger while doing some windsurf !
An amazing stay at the Sands, I recommend it to everyone !

We've been to the Sands the last two years and hope to make TCI an annual trip. This hotel is not as new as many of the properties on the island but it is a beautiful spot with great rooms and a good restaurant. Many of the rooms are timeshares and in some cases the furnishings are a little time worn, however, they are very spacious and comfortable. All the rooms have a screened in balcony/patio but I recommend getting an ocean view room.

Even if you're not staying at the Sands I would recommend having lunch at Hemmingways, the onsite restaurant. The fish tacos are great!! The conch fritters aren't too bad either. We've had dinner here a couple of times as well.

The clientele here is mostly older couples and families. The vibe is very laid back and quiet; everyone is in their rooms around 10pm and there aren't a lot people partying or getting crazy that I've seen. TCI isn't that type of island. If you're going to relax and dive this is the spot. This is one of the best beaches with the best water that I've ever seen.

Compared to the prices of the other properties on TCI I'd say that the Sands is a great value.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view close to the beach.

We just returned from a one week stay at the Sands. While there are more "upscale" resorts on Grace Bay, they are twice the price of the Sands and as far as I can tell don't provide twice the experience. We had a two bedroom oceanview suite, with a full kitchen. The suite (really a condo) was spotlessly clean, the beds were very comfortable, and there was plenty of room for five (my son slept on the pullout couch in the living room, with two twin beds for my daughters in the second bedroom). The beds were very comfortable. The view from our third floor screened porch overlooked the grounds and out to the ocean. The main pool is large enough and kid friendly.

The place is not as opulent as resorts such as Seven Stars for example, which had a more elaborate pool that seemed less usable for swimming. Small details -- towels weren't that plush, less "fancy" lounge chairs around the pool, more elaborate decor for example -- are what you will pay twice as much for at places like Seven Stars.

I couldn't care less about such things and was perfectly happy at the Sands, particularly because it was centrally located right in the middle of the Grace Bay Beach and has what I found to be the nicest and quietest stretch of beach on the entire bay. The staff is friendly, there are Hobie Cats, Kayaks and paddle boards to use. The Graceway supemarket and shopping is a short walk away, and off the beach snorkeling at Bight Reef was also a fairly short walk.

If you are looking for a family friendly, quiet, clean place that is a great value, I didn't see a better alternative on Grace Bay.

Room Tip: Ocean View probably not worth the extra money -- Garden View just as good, although Ocean Front was...

We stayed at the sands in January 2013. Overall, we had a great vacation, and for the right price, we would go back to the Sands.

Something to keep in mind as you read these reviews on TA. This property is made up of condos, that are privately owned an rented out. Though they are maintained as a hotel and uniformly updated, finished, etc, the owners generate revenue from the rentals. So some of the reviewers on TA who come back year after year, etc, may actually be owners, who have a vested personal interest in positive reviews. Though I didn't come across any egregious reviews here, this is something to keep in mind. There are other hotels in the Caribbean (such as the crane in Barbados), where it's glaringly obvious which reviews are unbiased, and which are from unit owners.

The positives:
- great location: the hotel is right on an excellent stretch of beach, and within walking distance of the grocery store, great restaurants, and a 10-15 minute easy drive from the airport- this location really can't be beaten

- gorgeous pool: the hotel isn't fancy or over the top, but the pool is really stunning and unique. It curves all around the whole property, so if the main area isn't for you, there are tiny little enclaves all over which lounge chairs, so you can have an area all to yourself, almost like a private pool. Also, the deck is wooden, so not slippery at all, and very comfortable (and not hot like another reviewer had noted)

- amazingly friendly staff, at the hotel and all over the island

- food: the food on Turks is excellent- much better than any other Caribbean island. It's expensive (as is the grocery store), but unlike other Caribbean islands, at least you get a good meal out of it!! (But skip Hemingways- there are MUCH better places within walking distance of the hotel)

To me, these positives are some of the most important features for a great trip, so they really outweighed the cons, and for that reason we would definitely come back to this hotel.

Now, some downsides:

- Turks is on the Atlantic, not the Caribbean. So the ocean and beach are gorgeous, but you won't find the calm quiet warm Caribbean waters you might find elsewhere.

- Rooms: we stayed in the studio courtyard, and even with the discounted rate of about 55%, this room SUCKED. Yes, it was small, yes, it had no balcony and few windows and was really dreary- we sort of expected that. But some basics were lacking- for example with such a tiny room, you really can't live out of a suitcase. Well, guess what- no dresser!!! The nightstand and desk have bins, but that's it!! There's a tiny closet, but it's like you're going to hang all of your shorts and t shirts, kids clothes, etc. plus the extra bedding and suitcases will basically fill the entire thing. This was really annoying.
The space was also really cramped- there is a lot of furniture in a very small space. For a room that is meant to accommodate two people, and with no porch or kitchen, you really don't need a sofa, a bunch of chairs, coffee table, side table...all in a room with no TV (which is on the desk in the bedroom, in a position that makes it really impossible to watch). Wouldn't been nice to have some of that space to move around in. The problem is that these small rooms are connected to the larger rooms, and part of a larger condo, that the owners can rent out separately as individual studios... They really aren't great stand alone spaces, even at the discounted rate. Lastly, the bathroom- it was very cramped, and didn't even have a hook to hang your bath towel on. Just one tiny towel bar, with all the hand towels, bath towels, and face clothes stacked on. So in order to use your bath towel, you had to move all the other towel (like into the bedroom or the sink), after you'd used your bath towel, there was no place to hang it. Again, very annoying. Lastly, this is our fault for not having asked, but there was no tub in this unit, just a shower stall, so not great if traveling with kids.

- beach chairs: despite signs saying that belongings will be cleared if seats are unoccupied for more than 30mns, most beach chairs and many pool chairs were claimed by the time I made it out at 8:30am, and remained unoccupied for hours, often even into the afternoon. The beach attendants will set you up with an umbrella further down, and sometimes if I made it out by 8 the chairs at the end of the beach were free, so it's not like you'll ever have nowhere to sit, it's just frustrating to have to schlepp all of your belongings past rows and rows of empty seats, even if you're an early riser. For example, every morning I watched a tiny lady lugging a baby, a carseat/stroller, towels, and all of their beach belongings down past 15 or twenty empty chairs before she could put her stuff down. That's absurd. Similarly, I like to sit in the shade by the pool. There are plenty of chairs and umbrellas, but because of the positioning of the sun, the umbrellas in most spots just cast a shadow into the pool- there were only a few truly shaded spots, and these lay claimed but basically empty. Very frustrating. I asked the beach attendant about this one day, and he sheepishly confessed that the people claiming seats were unit owners, so no one would dare remove their things or say anything about this practice.

I just returned from a Turks and Caicos weekend visit to the Sands at Grace Bay. The location of my room was fabulous--an ocean front studio in Building 3 facing the beach. The pros of the room were that it was very clean, spacious, had a kitchen area with a mini-fridg, microwave, coffee pot, utensils and plates. The covered, screened in porch was also wonderful because you can enjoy the beach and the sunsets over the ocean without being bothered by bugs. The enclosed feature of the porch also kept it from becoming broiling hot in the afternoons. The only downside of the screened in porch was that it did obstruct the views of Grace Bay a little because the screening used is the black mesh. Given the benefits of the screen, though, the slight obstruction of view was O.K.

The only downside to the room was how it was configured. The Sands condominiums are arranged in a four square with entry off the court yard in the middle. Upon entering the room, there is a bed with side tables and a desk, and a small flat screen T.V. The bathroom is to the left, followed by a sitting room and the mini-kitchen, which had access to the screened in porch. The window treatments in the bedroom off of the courtyard are vinyl venetian blinds that let in a lot of light. With no blackout curtains, sleeping in late was not much of an option. Maybe it's how the owners want the condo to be set up, but it seems that it would be better to have the bed adjacent to the screened in porch, which does have blackout curtains. I've had better mattresses and pillows, too.

The grounds of the Sands are beautiful, and the staff is very friendly. The weekend I was there, there were a lot of young families with children and babies, though, which made it noiser on the beach than I'm used to. (Mothers asking other family members where their children had gone, go find them, that type of thing.) If the weekend I was there was representative, the Sands is a great place for extended families (grandparents, children and grandchildren) and young couples with young children and babies. The babies were very cute as they took their first swims in their sun hats with their mothers holding them in tow.

Hemingway's is as good as it gets for a restaurant attached to the condominium complex. The restaurant is open air with both indoor and outdoor tables. The service is generally good, although on some days it was slow. The breakfasts range from eggs to French toast, and the dinners range from simple appetizers to rack of lamb. While there, I tried the shrimp in garlic sauce, which as awesome, fried Conch and the rack of lamb. All were great. Drinks are moderately priced, too. For breakfast, fruit lovers must not miss the fruit plate. It's delicious with all types of fruit, including bananas, strawberries, red grapes, pineapple, watermelon, papaya, cantaloupe, kiwi, and melon. Each day was different.

This was my first trip to Turks and Caicos, and the Sands was a great place to stay. If I were to go back, I would return to the Sands. I would probably not go back to Turks and Caicos, though, because there are other Caribbean islands I prefer, and Grace Bay has a lot of sea grass in it as you enter. This sea grass is good for snorklers, though, because it's what the fish feed on. I also prefer an island with more to do than going to the beach. These are individual preferences, though.

Room Tip: The Sands consists of six buildings, some of which are further from the ocean than others. Building...
