“Great week at the Sands in Turks”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

Great stay in the Turks. The Sands at Grace Bay had the perfect beach. The location, staff, food was great. We walked to beachfront dining all week from the Sands. The Bay Bistro, Mango Reef, was excellent. Hemingways at the Sands is also a great choice. Pools were very good but sometimes there we not enough chairs.

Picked this resort off of "Cheap Caribbean" web-site. My fiance and I had both never been to the Caribbean so one never really knows if what you see on the web is what one is really getting. With that being said we returned last night from 7 nights at The Sands. We stayed in the junior ocean view suite. We were lucky, got one of the suites with a remodeled bathroom. They are in the process of doing all the bathrooms I was told. The room was well appointed, and comfortably decorated. Some other travelers have listed the furnishings as "old/outdated". I would have to disagree, and add that the whole hotel experience rated easily a strong 4 star rating. As other travelers have mentioned, meals are expensive on the island. We grabbed bikes from the front desk and did what everyone else recommended and went to the grocery store which was less then 10 min bike ride away...stocked up on water, breakfast/lunch supplies and saved a ton. We brought a collapsible cooler and brought drinks to the beach. Our favorite waiter was Korna....great waiter who truly loves his job! Housekeeping staff found a 50 dollar bill my fiance dropped and neatly tucked it under the lip of the nicely made bed:) MOST IMPORTANTLY* Bring mosquito repellant and use it, ESPECIALLY if you go to North/Middle Caicos. Got swarmed by mosquitoes while attempting to explore the "Indian Caves"...bit no joke 50 times! Other then being attacked by the mosquitoes, It was a great trip!

I just got back from a 7 night stay at the Sands. We stayed in a studio the first night but upgraded to a 1-bedroom suite for the rest of the stay. The upgrade was well worth the cost. Beautiful scenic view of Grace Bay with a screened-in balcony was certainly the high point of the place. There was a fully furnished kitchen of which we made good use. All in all this was a very nice resort.

My husband and I are in our late 30s, well-traveled, no kids. We loved The Sands for their location, relaxing atmosphere, privacy that the wandering pools offered, and service we received. The concierge set up everything we needed and when we had a minor problem with our room upon checking in, they fixed it (a fridge leak) right away. They let us check out late on our departure day. There were some smaller children as school in the USA had already started, but thank God no screaming children.

The rooms were cozy, a bit older in decor, and the beds were overly soft which might be a problem for those with a bad back. Where the rooms adjoin it can be a bit noisy. Several times I thought my husband was talking to me, only to realize the voice was coming from the adjoining suite next to ours. The elevators are a little small if you are a family traveling with a lot of luggage, and I can see that if you are not ambulatory, there's no ramp to get onto the beach. If you are healthy, though, no problems.

We enjoyed Hemingways, took a car to get groceries, strolled 30" to the Coral Gardens Reef and used The Sands provided snorkeling gear. We also took out the catamaran sail and kayaks without having to wait much. It was easy to get towels and a seat at the pool or beach. The hot tub clearly says you need to be 18, but many parents did not watch their teens or tweens, so we had some noise there.

They clean the beach every day and were very responsive to our needs. A good value.

Room Tip: If I were traveling with kids or anyone with ambulatory issues, the elevators are small, so I'd...

Dear SunriseFitness,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at The Sands at Grace Bay in September 2012.
We appreciate the time you took to let us know of your stay and delighted to know you enjoyed the cozy room, staff services and amenities offered and of course Hemingway’s Restaurant. Also, we were happy to learn from your comments our staff was responsive to your needs and remedied the refrigerator quickly.

Indeed, we are in an ideal location within the Grace Bay area as well having one of the top best beaches in the world right at our doorstep.

Again, thank you and we look forward to welcoming you back to Providenciales in the future.

My husband and I stayed at The Sands for our honeymoon, big mistake. It could have been because we were in a ground floor unit, but we had bugs in our room, also the room itself was dirty. Housekeeping came every day, but only seemed to leave partially folded towels and make our bed without changing the sheets. The bathroom was disgusting; unknown substances splattered on the walls. Also, for the first two days of our stay, housekeeping failed to close our door all the way so when we came back to our room our door was unlatched and we had to spend 10 minutes making sure nothing was stolen. Thankfully it wasn't. When we spoke to the front desk about it, we were basically told that we should utilize the in-room safe as the solution. The restaurant, Hemingway's, wasn't anything spectacular either. The menu was limited and overpriced. Food was not impressive. Our suggestion would be to pay a little extra and not stay at the "Motel 8" of Turks and Caicos.

Room Tip: Pay extra and maybe your room will be clean and free of bugs....

Dear GFS2012,

Thank you so much for providing us with feedback from your stay.

We are disappointed to learn of your experience during your stay with us at The Sands. It is unfortunate that we were not made aware of all issues you experienced with Housekeeping and Maintenance.

It is our goal to meet or exceed our guests’ expectations in both product and services. Typically we receive many positive comments and regret your experience fell short of our usual high standards.

We shared your feedback with the appropriate managers as well Hemingway’s management so that we may take any corrective measures.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Providenciales.

Sincerely,

Miquel Swann

I picked both Turks & Caicos and Sands at Grace Bay blindly, knowing little about either. We were there in July, 2012. My wife, son and I had the best time at the Sands, and we're planning to return next July, 2013. The staff was great and the purchasing manager's daughter (who is 8 was visiting her dad from Freeport) and my 10 year old son clicked and the two of them had a blast with eachother. We were invited to participate in the staff's olympic games and the lunch that followed. The general manager's jerk chicken was the best I've eaten. We were treated like family. We can't wait to return to the glorious beach, sunsets and friendly staff. We're just waiting for the 2013 rates to be published to book as we've already made airline reservations.
