We arrived at The Sands for our third stay on March 8, 2012. This trip was a 10 day duration rather than our prior two 7 day stays. On our original trip in 2009, we were absolutely blown away by the beauty of the expansive soft sand beach and turquoise waters. We had a 1 bedroom ground floor unit that looked out onto the garden / meandering pool. It was a well appointed condo that had every amenity including a washer and dryer. The standards of the unit were that of your own home. Nothing was 'cheap'.
On our return visit in 2011, (went to Olympics in 2010), we had a different 1 bedroom ground floor unit also facing the garden. Almost every unit can see a bit of the ocean, so garden view is great. We spent our time at the beach and traveling around anyway. Again, the unit condition was pristine.
On our latest trip, we had another near perfect 1 bedroom ground floor unit. The screened in porch offered a view of the ocean and sound of the surf. The pull out couch in this unit had a very poor mattress unfortunately and we had to use the pillows from the lounge chairs to supplement it and make it comfortable enough to sleep on.

Did I mention that the sand and water will blow you away? This is one of the only resorts in this area that actually cleans the beach at 5:30 every morning so when you get up and pick your spot under an umbrella, there is nothing to look at but a beautiful view!

The people that work here understand that tourism is their industry on this island. They truly appear to enjoy their work and are some of the most wonderful and helpful in the business. Get up at 6:00 a.m. and find a grounds keeer cutting down coconuts. He will be more than happy to cut it open for you and pour out the water into your waiting pitcher.
Find Christopher at the beach and you have found someone that works tremendously hard and will not stop helping you until you are happy whether that may be from learning how to sail a Hobie Cat or how to wind surf or paddle the waves on a paddle board. Christopher will teach it all and with a grand smile on his face. Definitely one of the hardest and most dedicated workers.
The front reception staff and concierge staff are all amazing. They will spend any amount of time finding you restaurant reservations, taxis or bicycles for your day trips. Claudette has a handle on everything that happens at this resort. She is a fantastic lady that seems to be always at the front counter, working tirelessly. When passing through the front 'lobby', don't forget to ask for that welcome rum punch that they make soooooo well every day.

Hemingway's is the on site, on the beach restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also have servers that stroll the beach and will take your order from your lounge chair and bring it back to you. One caution, when ordering drinks from the servers on the beach and paying cash, make sure you look at your bill and your change. Very many times the change was short.
If you get to meet Carolyn at Hemingway's, you have been honoured. She has the most amazing sense of propriety, the most perfect English ever spoken and is just a terrific person!
If there is a drawback to Hemingway's, it is the cost of the food. Unfortunately it is really an island issue, not just an issue at this restaurant. It is very easy to spend $200/day just for food for a family of three if not careful. We buy groceries from the IGA just down the street and cook most breakfasts and lunches in the room in the fully equipped kitchens.
Overall, this is without a doubt, the most amazing place we have ever stayed. We have been to Jamaica, Florida, DR, Cuba and Antigua. In our opinion, this is the best!

We just returned from a week at the Sands. I did a lot of research and decided on it based on it's location on the beach and the less formal nature as described by others. It was a great decision. We had a 2 BR Oceanfront with a great view of the pool and ocean. The grounds were beautiful and the beach was amazing. The location was terrific - walking distance to the supermarket and to a variety of good restaurants. Hemingway's was very good and a great fall back to eat when we were too tired to go elsewhere. The condo was very comfortable - loved the screened porch. Everyone was very friendly and the crowd was a nice mix of families with kids of various ages. It was exactly what we wanted and would definitely go back. If you are looking for a lower key resort in a great location, I highly recommend it.

Room tip: While oceanfront was great, the grounds are so pretty you can't go wrong with an oceanview or pool view.

We just returned from a week long vacation at The Sands. It was awesome! My husband and I were looking for a place to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and my 50th birthday with our two children ages16 and 20...The Sands was the perfect place. The Sands is set up more like small condo units. The units were comfortable and the screened porches were big enough for us all to sit and enjoy the ocean view. The beach was beautiful, there were plenty of chairs and room for everyone to spread out on the beach. There were free hobie cats, wind surfing boards, and paddle boards. The pools were nice and spread out. There were a lot of small children playing in the pools so our family spent most of our time on the beach. I must say the best part of The Sands was the staff. Everyone was so nice and went out of their way to make our vacation special. The last night we were there the staff at Hemingways heard it was my 50th birthday so they got a cake with candles and brought it to me and sang happy birthday. It was such a sweet surprise. My family really enjoyed The Sands and we will definitely return

Room tip: The Sands is set up more for families...so you will have to expect small children to be running around and making noise.

We just returned recently from a week At the Sands at Grace Bay. We are repeat customers an have stayed there 4 to 5 times. I have never been there when there were so many children. There was a child in the room above us that was running g around all night and kept dropping something that rolled across the floor repeatedly all night. We asked the front desk to change our room and they never did!

We did not get an entire nights sleep the entire week. They also were not full the week we were there.

Then we were not made aware of the civil servant strike going on for some time until we were headed back to the airport. Thanks to Jet Blue we were the only flight that got out that dat even though 6 hours delayed.

We were also surprised that the room wasn't very well maintained. The floor tiles in the bath room were all broken and the faucet in the tub was falling out of the wall.

My daughter slept on the sofa bed and the springs were pushing up through the worn out mattress.

Most of the furniture was really worn and should have been replaced. The paint was pealing off and was stained as Wasserstein the upholstery on the couches, chairs, bedspreads.

I hardly think this Place should have a 4 star rating.

And if you want to rest, I suggest looking for an adults only resort.
Since we were on the first floor there were also cars that pulled up on the access road outside our room and parked. One night some drunken guys were shouting outside the room.

Stay away from the buildings near the access road near building 2 and 3 . The fire detectors made a weird noise all of the time.

The restaurant does have excellent food.

Room tip: Get the top floor

We stayed here for the first time 1 bedroom studio very spacious ocean view was nice I would not waste the money on ocean front since that means you are also next to the busiest pool, restaurant, and most of the action on the resort for me quiet and relaxing area is better.STaff was excellent,my advice would be to get a taxi ($9 each person) to the supermarket and stock up for your stay, food is pricey but cheaper than eating out all the time, I rate this resort very good and recommend it highly.

Room tip: Ocean views great ocean front great view but also the loudest part of resort
