On an island that seems to be rapidly becoming subdivision USA-east this property was a true gem. DON'T stay here if you want a big pool, toys on the beach, nightlife or fawning staff. If you want to be left alone to relax at your own pace--I'm a big believer in just sitting on the beach for hours at a time--this is the place for you. Nothing fancy or over the top. Just a simple little place with a restaurant, a garden and the beach. Look for Ismae at breakfast in the Bay Bistro--she'll treat you right.

This is our fourth time to Provo in the last 10 years, and our second time at Sibonne. The island is definitely growing (they finally have a two lane road on Leeward Highway, with roundabouts no less!), but in the off season, we think that a vacation at Sibonne still has a special seclusion that makes a romantic getaway perfect. It all depends upon what you want - if you have a family of young kids who want constant excitement and thrills, then Sibonne may not be for you (Beaches may be a better bet), but if it's just a quiet getaway for mainly adult oriented relaxation, tanning, swimming, snorkelling etc. then I think it's ideal.

So, as of July 19th 2005 (our last day) Grace Bay is still spectacular, although regular visitors will now notice a whole string of luxury beachfront hotels and condos all along the beachfront. None of them are more than a few stories tall and they're all tastefully designed, but I would imagine that the peak season is now a real zoo (which is why we go in the off season). The other problem with the new development is the construction activity itself. On the west side of Sibonne the beachfront construction is almost complete and they are now expanding the property inland. You will hear this noise from the beach but it's only daylight hours and you normally wont even notice it. On the east side they are just starting to build the ultra luxury resort "Mandalay". No buildings in place yet, but I would imagine that when it kicks in there will be some additional noise to contend with. When we were there in 2003 they were building the western side and it still wasn't too bad.

Sibonne itself remains timeless. It really looks kind of out of place next to the other major hotels, but that's what we like. Exceptionally good room rates, no fuss, no kids running around the property, excellent restaurant on site (a little pricey, but everything is on the island), good quality rooms (walls are a little thin in the ocean front rooms, but what are you doing spending time in your room when there's an awesome beach 10 feet outside your doorway!), and a general relaxed feel that is easy to sucumb to.

In the off season you will still have the beach mainly to yourself (which amazes me still) and it really is that quiet. You can walk east or west to additional restaurants and down to coral gardens reef for snorkellng (if you are after peace and quiet you will absolutely cringe as you walk past Beaches on the way!).

The other reviews about threadbare towels and stuff are true, but it's really just nit-picks. Plus, you have to remember that when people review hotels and locations on Provo and complain about service, it's part of the culture. It's different to the american service industry - much more european. They're not slow and they don't ignore requests for service, they just don't have TGI Friday's hats and a million 'flair' buttons. It's island time - get used to it, slow down, that's why you went there in the first place remember?

So again, a big thumbs up again for us for Sibonne. Congrats on not selling out to the developers and for maintaining a very reasonably priced sanctuary of comfort and relaxation on one of the worlds best remaining beaches.

I've attached a few photographs including one looking back at the hotel at night, the tiki huts on the beach in front of the hotel (notice the number of people on the beach!), and sitting on the end of our bed through the room door (this was an ocean front room). Yes the ocean really is that close!

AW.

Overall the sibonne was just ok. Grace Bay is a wonderful beach...with that being said, Sibonne has little else going for it. Service was none... the woman at the front desk never smiled and when asked questions did everything she could to be unhelpful. The restaurant did have good food and an unbeleiveable view, but I was unimpressed even with Junior's (the famous bartender) attitude. Everyone just seemed annoyed to be in the service industry. Room service was pretty much just making the bed, they didn't leave toilet paper one day and forgot towels the next. And if it rains, you're in trouble because there is NOTHING to do.
