Owner description: The S/V ATABEYRA is a 69', traditionally rigged trading schooner that retired from cargo service almost 20 years ago. The vessel traded for years between Hispaniola and the Turks & Caicos Islands carrying such commodities as rum , beer, produce, plants, building materials and even a few critters. The ship has been refit as a charter vessel and now stays close to home in the sheltered waters of Grace Bay and the Caicos Cays of Turks and Caicos Islands. The S/V ATABEYRA is the perfect platform for learning hands on operation of traditional sailing craft, for exploring the exquisite undersea world and many islands that surround us or just lounging on her spacious, shaded decks. No vessel in the TCI charter fleet is as large or as versatile. Sun Charters and the ATABEYRA crew offer our guests a unique opportunity to get real sailing experience aboard the last of the tropical trading schooners. Being a gaff-rigged vessel carrying two headsails, there are lots of lines to pull, many sails to tend, and the skipper will even be happy to let you take the helm. Feel the past come alive as we sail through the uninhabited chain of Caicos Cays the same way it was done hundreds of years ago. The Cays were once the lair of the infamous lady pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Reid, and the waters and surrounding islands remain basically untouched since that time. The Crew of the Good Ship Atabeyra are proud that she is overwhelmingly the boat the residents choose when recreating in the Caicos Cays.

My husband & I decided to splurge and book a sunset cruise on our last night with Sun Charters aboard the Atabeyra. We had a great time! The boat was quite packed, but we scored seats near the back where it was much more intimate. Rum punch was plentiful, and snacks were offered. The sunset portion of the cruise was interrupted by some inopportune clouds, but the glow worm portion was the highlight of the cruise by far. Tucked away in a canal near the Marina in Leeward, boats travel to view this spectacle after the full moon. It is unlike anything I've seen- a must-not-miss if the timing is right! Remember: it is a sailboat, so speed is not a factor during the experience.

I went on two expeditions on the Atabeyra whilst staying in Provo. Captain Tibi and first mate Junior were incredible company and made sure we had everything we needed. The Glow worms night trip is unmissable when in Provo, providing your trip is close to the full moon! I travelled with my friend Lisa, but the trip is welcoming to people of all ages including families with young children. We were lucky enough to be asked to help raise the main sail of the Atabeyra which is a mean feat after a few rum punches and in front of audience! The snorkel trip the next day was equally amazing, Tibi even let me take over on the sound system for a little bit perhaps to his own misfortune!! thanks boys!! see you next year!!

Beautiful glow worm sailboat. Junior was our favorite guide!! He told us stories of island life and was so entertaining to our children. Glow worms and stars were equally amazing!

A wonderful compliment to a vacation in Provo! Both the Day Cruise and the Sunset Cruise are just wonderful. The Day Cruise takes you out past the reef that surrounds the North shore, where you get a chance to jump off the boat and snorkel the turquoise waters to see the beauty of life under the sea. Then you cruise over the the smaller adjacent islands (Pine Cay) to enjoy a bit of time exploring the beach. Snacks and beverages are provided on board, but remember to pack a lunch as the warm sun and gentle sway of the ocean will make you hungry. There is plenty of shade and sun to be found while sailing on the boat. Don't be surprised if you have a cat nap while cruising the shores of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Dave is a wonderful and gracious host, and his crew members, Tibi and Junior, were very friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks again for such a wonderful afternoon!

Spent 5 hours on Atabeyra with the captain, Tibi, and first mate, Junior. Great snorkeling near the reef and then a beautiful beach with an excellent lunch. The crew was fantastic, entertaining 5 kids 7 to 12 and greatly helping a 96 year young. Junior may be the first all pro QB from TCI! Very comfortable boat and relaxing day. I highly recommend this excursion.
