Due to the outrageous price of boat excursions, we opted to hang with the locals. You truly are missing out if you only stay within the confines of the cruise lines excursions.

We are glad to have given our money to a local family who run the Preservation Tour Tram. We had an excellent narrated tour and history of Grand Turk. The brothers who run the tram, stopped for 10 - 15 minutes so we could shop for souvenirs from local crafters. I wished I had purchased more of the necklaces made by the local woman. Everything run by the cruise line was so outrageously priced. One lady dropped the price down on a bracelet I was looking at, but I paid the extra $1 because the locals really have nothing and the cruise line takes a lot of business from those that live there. I told the lady she needs to make money, everything was already priced cheaply, I would hope that other tourists would do the same.

Our tour lasted about 2hrs or so. I loved the open air of the tram, such a great view without being stuck in one of those tour vans. You also have an opportunity to take pictures on the tram as you are moving along. We did another stop at the lighthouse overlooking the reef. At the end of the tour, we got to sample free conch fritters, which were delish. We ended up purchasing an order of conch fritters, and ginger beer, (it had a kick for me!), then enjoyed the view on the free chair rentals by the Village Bar. There was a DJ at the bar who was very entertaining and pleasant. When we walked back to the ship through the Margaritaville, again a high-priced cruise line area, you could barely move.

Once back on the ship, I overheard fellow passengers wondering about some of the sights they could see from the ship. They had no clue about the history of the island, nor had they explored anything outside the boundaries of Margaritaville. Again, you do a diservice to yourself if you do not take the opportunity to immerse yourself in other cultures when you travel. that is half the fun!!!

We arrived at Grand Turk on the Destiny (whilst on holiday from England) and had not planned to do anything as we had previously been disappointed by a Carnival excursion. However, we saw this independant tram company whilst having a drink at 'the village'. We paid $20pp and it was money really well spent. The tour operator was entertaining and informative. We didn't need to book. I would really recommend this trip to anyone else who wants to get a real feel for the island from locals who are committed to giving back to the Island. Thank you Island Tours!!

Based on reading the reviews, we booked a tour for 23 people (off Carnival Valor). The tour operator gave us a discount (we paid $21pp). You can see the tram from the ship, so it is REALLY easy to find.

They said they normally start at 9AM, but offered to start at 8:30AM for us. We met them at 8:30AM on the beach a few hundred yards from the port entrance. It was not the easiest walk for some of our older members. Our group ranged from 8 to 75 years old.

We left promptly at 8:30 and did not return until 10:30AM. We made a shopping/drink stop at a local crat market. We also stopped at a lighthouse with Great Reef view. The driver/guide provided narration and answered our questions. He gave us a good overview of the island culture.

When we returned, he offered to take people again or to the museum (no extra cost). We stopped at the bar for a reasonably priced beer and conch fritters. The further you get from the port, the better the drink prices are. Look for the Canadian flag, if the tram is not parked on the beach.

We also were able to use the beach chairs/umbrellas at no cost. We spend about 90 minutes in the water and some beach time. This gave my nephew a chance to get use to his snorkel and mask. Then we walked to the port and dipped in the pool to get the sand and salt water of before returning to the ship.

Great day.
