We stayed at Island House for 12 nights mid-January 2013 and were more than delighted with our choice. Situated a short distance away from the main town it’s slightly elevated location means there’s usually a cooling breeze, a welcome bonus. The views across the gardens and North Creek were stunning and the sun setting over the sea magical.
We were collected from the airport by Donna, the charming hostess who runs Island House. Even though we arrived several hours earlier than intended, within 15 minutes she was at the airport to collect us. On the short drive to Island House Donna was extremely helpful, giving us a guided tour of the bars, restaurants, dive shops, supermarkets and other local information.
Our first floor apartment had dual aspect patio doors, a feature we particularly loved, leading to balconies giving a choice of areas to relax, socialise or eat. It was air conditioned, spacious, clean, and well equipped. The kitchen has a large fridge freezer, 4 burner hob with oven and grill, and a microwave. The microwave went faulty during our stay but was immediately replaced with a brand new one. There’s plenty of clean fresh drinking water readily available meaning you don’t have to buy it from the supermarket, a real bonus. The bedroom has a ceiling fan as well as air conditioning for those warmer nights. We particularly appreciated the large comfortable bed. The apartment was cleaned daily by Millie and the beautiful gardens well tended by Arnold who is also the odd job man. The high speed WiFi worked well saving a fortune in calls to the UK as we were able to use Skype instead of mobile roaming.
A big bonus to vacations at Island House is the car included in the price. As other visitors have enthused, it gives freedom to travel around the island, not having to order taxis or be restricted to the main town.
If you fancy a change from the quiet, laid back atmosphere of the island then take a drive down to the Cruise Ship Centre on a day when there is a Cruise ship in. It’s a complete contrast to ‘sleepy’ Cockburn Town. There are lots of people and lots of retail therapy available to suit all tastes. My wife particularly liked the shop called “Dizzy Donkey”. There is a sign on the wall inside that says “Your husband called and said it’s OK to buy whatever you like”. Did he now!!
During our second week on Grand Turk we booked some scuba diving, the first time for 15 years. We chose Oasis Divers and were very pleased with their professional friendly service and the price we paid. Because it was so long since we’d last dived we needed to take a refresher lesson and John, our instructor, was patience personified. He just made it so easy for us and needless to say, under his watchful gaze, we did just fine. On subsequent dives our Dive Master “Pepper” was always determined to find the right dive site for the conditions or time of day. He was also excellent at pointing out a variety of sea life which we’d maybe have missed.
We loved Grand Turk and when we return will definitely choose to stay at Island House. We arrived there as strangers but left as friends. Thanks Donna.
