My partner and I visited Gloucester House in late January, after spending 4 days in the rainforest in Trinidad. We were very, very happy we did. Gloucester House is a beautifully building, designed by one of the owners, Bea Sargent, to allow the aesthetics, sun and bright air of the Caribbean to flow inside. The house has a huge verandah, with gorgeous palm and banana tree slopes dropping down to a rocky coast (beautiful beaches are within walking distance). The room we had was filled with light and the views of the water were spectacular. Bea and Win are terrific hosts, committed to making sure that guests have a wonderful stay. Bea cooks relatively simple but delicious breakfasts, which are included, and excellent dinners (for an extra fee). But more than that, they are both committed to sharing their love of the island. They know the beaches, the restaurants, local guides and where to go. When the water on Parlatuvier beach, for example, was a little rough and discolored for snorkeling (an effect of a full moon and a bit of wind) Win knew to direct us to a small beach in Castara, where the water was more settled. There, the snorkeling was beautiful, with plenty of reef fish, and brain and fan coral to keep us excited. Later, when the water calmed, we had even better snorkeling in Englishman's bay. Both Bea and Win, however, went beyond normal host duties. When my partner and I somehow lost our room key while snorkeling, Win and Bea made us feel absolutely okay about it. They act from a fundamental generosity, and it makes one's stay feel entirely welcomed and enjoyed. The house itself was extremely clean and the bed was very comfortable. Both my partner and I travel quite a bit, and while we typically don't return to the same place twice (there is too much to see in the world), one of the few places we would consider returning to is Gloucester Place. The beauty of Tobago is stunning and precious, the house is designed to maximize that beauty and allow one to relax, and Bea and Win are the best B&B owners I have ever dealt with. A terrific place to decompress and soak up blue water, bright air and warm sun.
