The Beach House Castara
Ranked #14 of 98 Specialty Lodging in Tobago
Reviewed May 1, 2005

I was surprised to read the poor review on the Tobago Beach House. We have been staying there for the past five years for a month and sometimes 6 weeks each year. To us it is a piece of paradise!!! How many places can you step off of your front porch onto the beach, walk a few feet into the Caribbean and swim with a pair of stingrays, see the most beautiful marine life, watch a beautiful sunset, eat fresh fish, drink the rum ----etc ---need I go on?

The locals are probably the some of the friendliest people we have ever met! They would do anything for you. Over these past five years we have made friends in the village and they all know us by now. What a treat it is to go to the mud oven in the village, watch the ladies bake their breads wrapped in banana leaves and eat it fresh from the oven. We can walk any street in the village anytime of the day or night and feel safe! How many places can say that?

Jeannel and Porridge are the caretakers and they do care and take care of you. The place is always clean, beds changed twice weekly and towels provided. One of the other reviews says much of what I would say about this - that the place is well taken care of.

The owners Carole and Graham are super people!!! I have never stayed in a place where two people spend so much time making sure everything is okay and you are having a good time. It is important to them that you are satisfied with the accommodations and that everything is going well, and if there is something unsatisfactory they would like to know.

One of the things I like best about the Beach House is we have met so many people from other countries and sharing our experiences has been fun.

My husband and I always say that we don't want to tell too many people about the Beach House for fear it won't be available to us, but I guess I was quite angry when I read the bad review. It's hard to believe anyone could complain about paradise!!!!!

I can't believe the previous reviewer (Berkshire, UK) stayed in the same place as my wife and I have for the past 3 years. Firstly, we know Porridge and Jeanelle, the couple who look after Beach House, as personal friends who have the highest standards in their jobs as caretakers. During our three previous stays, the cleaning was done perfectly, on time, every time - once every three days as advertised; nothing was too much for them. Self-catering means just that - you have to do a little for yourselves as well. The construction work is complete and consists of a small block of apartments, set back from the beach. Yes, it was an irritation while it was being built, but that's over now. As for the locals, they are a great bunch who like to enjoy themselves, and who have welcomed us back with genuine pleasure. Just like everywhere else, you have to be a little 'streetwise' and know just who to have a word with about the (very rare) unfortunate incident involving an over-zealous local. We are, after all, talking about the Caribbean in all its wonderful variety; we all the better for enjoying it as it is and not expecting something it can never be. This is a great location for a 2 week chill-out - a clean, friendly, well-priced self-catering apartment it most certainly is. A five star hotel with room service? No-one ever said it was!! Go see for yourself!

We were looking for something special, somewhere to relax and unwind, and we didn’t want to get stuck in a tourist trap. We found all that and more at the Beach House in Castara Bay.

When we first found the Beach House on the internet and read all the reviews, it sounded too good to be true. Now we know better. And like another reviewer on WheretoStay wrote, we would prefer to keep this place a secret so it’s available to us again, because there’s no doubt that we will be going back!

Castara Bay was a beautiful "back to nature" retreat, where we were able to mingle with the local people and feel very welcome. Coconut Heights made us relax. There were no TVs, no phones, and no radios. They were replaced by the sounds of waves on the beach, songbirds in the lush foliage, roosters that didn’t know what time of day it is. Also, the beautiful beach was at our doorstep, and we enjoyed the most spectacular sunsets we’ve ever seen.

It was very well equipped and it felt very homey, thanks to owners Carole and Graham, whom we met during our stay. They were wonderful people. Thanks to them for sharing their home with us.

We ate at the restaurants on the beach, where we could get a very good meal for an excellent price, or sometimes we’d just stay put and have wine and snacks while watching the sun go down. We could also buy fresh fish on the beach when the fishermen came in with their daily catch.

We took a one-day boat tour with Marvin and Duck (highly recommended) and toured other parts of the island with Porridge. It was always great to return to Castara Bay. We met other tourists and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. We met for dinner, and dined and danced to soca music at the Boat House Restaurant, just steps away from the Beach House.

Porridge and Jeanell made sure we had everything we needed. Porridge stopped by daily and could arrange trips for groceries, to the bank, for car rentals, tours, or the drug store to pick some repellent for the small sand fly-like insects that seemed to enjoy my husband in the evenings, but never bothered me at all (must be a male thing). If Porridge picks you up at the airport, he will stop for groceries on the way if you wish.

There were a few local “shops” within walking distance of the Beach House where you can pick up the basics. It was also a treat to buy baked goods from the local ladies. Jeanell came by every few days to change the linens, and made sure we had clean towels.

Thank you to everyone who made our vacation so enjoyable. We truly felt welcomed, cared for, and relaxed at the Beach House. We’ll be back.

We arrived at Coconut Heights late in the evening and drank our chilled complimentary champagne on the huge, beautiful balcony listening to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach. We awoke at 5am to see the Caribbean sea without even getting out of bed! Of course we came running out and discovered that The Beach House has the most amazing view of Castara - the little bay is directly under the balcony and the big bay is just off to the left. The house is surrounded by trees which makes you feel as though there is nothing but you and the beach for miles!

Porridge and Jeannel look after you during your stay, including picking you up and returning you to the airport for a small fee. Jeannel changes the bed linen and towels every 3 days (she even changed them at the end when we only had one night left!). Porridge is your man for anything else you need. He arranged trips for us, took us himself to the wonderful Sunday night party 'Sunday School' (be warned, the rum punches are lethal!!), organised a jeep for us, took us to the supermarket in Scarborough, took out our rubbish and generally just checked up on us every couple of days to make sure that we were ok and didn't need anything. Nothing was too much trouble.

Castara itself is amazing. It is a sleepy little fishing village where you watch your lunch and dinner coming in on Brenton's fishing boat in the morning! There are a few little shops around selling the basics (i.e. bread, crisps, mosquito repellent, soap, beer etc!) but for major shopping or getting money from ATMs, you need to go into Scarborough which is approximately 45 minutes away. TT dollars are the best way to go and if you are going to Castara, I would advise to take plenty with you. There is a safe in The Beach House, although I wouldn't have thought you would have any problems even if you didn't use it. One day as we were swimming in the sea, Marvin of Nature Boys Tours came to tell us that dolphins were swimming just out of the bay. He took us off to see them and we were gone at least an hour - my husband's wallet was still safe on the beach where we had left it! Castara people are extremely friendly and laid-back. The restaurants are sporadic and you need to let them know in advance if you wish to eat that night in low season - otherwise they don't open!

We couldn't have wished for a more perfect honeymoon and will definitely visit The Beach House again. Although the big resorts look appealling, you cannot beat sharing Tobago with the local people in true Caribbean style. The Beach House is a little bit more expensive than some apartments in Castara, but when we saw the ones other people were staying in (and more importantly, when they saw our apartment) the difference was obvious. We can't wait to go back!

Lovely spot but overpriced for what it was, and not cleaned at all during our stay of two weeks! The beach house website should also point out that the house is right at the bottom of a very steep slope and therefore not for the infirm/elderly. The location is nice and the beach right in front was almost deserted during our stay, however, some annoying things like no mosquito spray or mossie machines either in the house or available to buy locally. construction work going on very close by, so we suspect a big apartment block will be in place in the coming months. Kitchen and floors of the apartment were filthy and were not cleaned at all during our stay. Linen and towels changed once. Rubbish rarely cleared and no bin bags left for us to clean up after ourselves. Enjoyed mixing with the locals but some of them banging on the door late at night drunk or doped up asking to be let in and drink our rum and coke was pushing things a bit far, we thought, even though we are quite laid back people and have travelled the world far and wide!!

Management response:Responded April 19, 2005

We are sorry that these guests were so unsatisfied with their stay. We pride ourselves on having a high level of customer service and were very disappointed to receive our first negative review. In response to the points raised in the review, we would like to say the following:
Our accommodation at Beach House is let as self-catering accommodation, for which (as we understand is usual for such a holiday let) a cleaning service is not offered. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly and to a high standard before each guest arrives, and bed linen and towels are changed every 3 days, as well as the garbage. As beautiful as the Caribbean is, it does suffer the minor annoyance of having mosquitoes. We provide mosquito nets in each of our apartments, and both mosquito coils and insect repellant can be bought from the local stores in Castara. There was some building work going on at the time that these guests visited and we apologise for any disruption caused. Incidentally, we had not heard any other negative comments from any other guests who stayed at the same time and understand that the building work has now been completed. We ask all our guests prior to their stay to speak to Porridge (our manager) if they encounter any problems, as he will endeavour to sort them out. We are sorry that these particular anonymous guests did not come forth with their complaints at the time, as we would certainly have done our utmost to remedy them during their stay.

Wow, what a place. I stayed in December 2003. The whole island has the most wonderful people, I have been to many Caribbean Islands and this for me is the best. It is not for people who want the 5* treatment.
However if you want to chill out, glass of rum watching the sun go down (or up) this is the place for you. Get out and about and meet the people. We had locals coming in and cooking for us, who can ask for more than that. The only down side we had was 7 days of 24hour rain, but hey who can control the weather, rainy season was running 2 months late for the first time ever, this did not ruin our holiday although we had gone for the sun. Played alot of card games and taught the locals a few too. If you are no formalities, shorts and a t-shirt, go with the flow you cannot ask for better in my humble opinion. If fact I loved it so much I am going back to the island on my own this month for sail week, what aparty that will be...... Happy holidays.
