Good food, cosy surroundings, good for a romantic couples dinner. One part of the restaurant is in a greenhouse style atrium which is very pleasant

“Someone's old basement retouched with a thin veneer of false elegance”
Reviewed June 11, 2011

I was deeply disappointed by this restaurant (and mildly disappointed by the hotel, where we were staying). This was our last night in Trinidad & Tobago, and we were hoping to eat someplace nice. It was the night before Easter, so maybe the waitstaff's sullen disinterest in us and our meal were due to the fact that they had to work on a holiday eve? I don't know, but they didn't inspire much sympathy.

The menu was very short, with nothing unique or interesting. We both ended up eating hamburgers, simply because there was nothing that sounded very good on the menu (i.e. interesting local cuisine - the menu at the local roti joint was far more stimulating). We had some soup and salad as well - everything was fair, unimpressive, edible, overpriced. The house red wine was atrocious, so acidic I couldn't finish a glass. What was worst of all, though, was the atmosphere. It reminded me of a restaurant near my hometown where some aspiring restauranteur bought an old Pizza Hut, and tried to retool it into an elegant (and expensive) gourmet bistro - except that place, at least, had windows and some natural light. Battimanzelle is in a basement (it may be ground level, but it definitely feels like a basement) with no windows (or so few we didn't notice them). The decor consists of bright, gaudy paint colors in stark contrast with the bleach white of the ceiling and anything outside of the immediate dining area. There is no attention to detail. The tablecloths, place settings, etc. are cheap and plain. There are exposed pipes and such that give the whole room the feel of a warehouse that someone splashed some red and yellow paint onto (and we're not talking an intentional industrial loft minimalist ambiance, either). I don't know why this restaurant is so highly recommended, unless this really is the best that Port of Spain has to offer? I hope not; that idea makes me sad. We saw some other restaurants in the center of town that looked much more appealing than this, but didn't eat anywhere else that wasn't ultra-casual. Oh, I should add: there is a nice terrace you can dine on, but for some reason they wouldn't let us (we were the only ones there for dinner).

“Excellent local dishes”
Reviewed March 2, 2010

This restaurant is very expensive but a great menu and wine lists. Parking at this restaurant requires some maneuver. The restaurant is associated with a local hotel. The fish selection is excellent and always fresh. Full coast dinner for 2 well be over $100US excluding alcohol but at is worth the visit.

“lunch not dinner”
Reviewed October 29, 2009

Went for lunch there January this year for my birthday ( we were staying overnight ) It was absolutely delicious and the service very good , so good we decided to have dinner there to , that was a mistake .
The setting outside was lovely but we were served by two pregnant waitresses who looked like they were going into labour any minute . The meal was average and the waitress had no knowledge of the wine on the wine list .
The dessert was particulary awful a coconut creme brulee which was disgusting . We were the last table in the restaurant and were made to feel uncomfortable as we were the last guests there . Totally different from the lunch experience .Would we go back , yes just for lunch not dinner .
