“Local Food in large portions”

Femmes du Chalet Breakfast Shack
Ranked #131 of 168 Restaurants in Port of Spain
Cuisines: Caribbean
Description: An array of food stands within a cafeteria-like setting, some have claimed that this is one of the best places to experience local Trini cuisine at it's finest. Situated right next to the actual Port, this has traditionally been a place for the Portsmen to grab a bite to eat before their long days at the Port. Though it is now a place where many Trini business people will stop by to grab some delicious and quick. Inside, they host everything from refreshing fruit smoothies to some of Trinidad's local classics that you can not easily find at street vendors' stands. Not to mention, it sits right on the water and provides some excellent views.

Femmes du Chalet was previously known as the Breakfast Shed and some individuals continue to call it by that name. This institution started out as a group of women preparing meals to serve to men who worked on the port off loading ships, as such they served large portions for men performing physically hard work. This tradition of large portion sizes has continued, although the clientele has expanded tremendously beyond port workers.

The food served here is truly local Trinidad cuisine both for breakfast and lunch. They do not serve dinner. The building housing this institution is an upgraded version created because there was an uproar when the previous building was torn down to create high rise towers. The building is on the waterfront and open on two sides to give a view of the ocean and allow the sea breezes to flow through. Seating is on picnic type tables with benches. On entering there are several cooks arranged in an L shape and you choose which person you want to order lunch from, with all the meals on display.

About 3 blocks from the cruise port and short walk to this "Original Breakfast Shed" located right next and passed the Hyatt hotel is a collection of small stands ran by local people with their own unique style of local cooking. The local tourist guides all around the port can direct you to the place.

You order the food by pointing to the dish you want and then seat in open picnic benches facing the sea. You eat with the locals.
Not a restaurant but a fast food type collection of stalls with very reasonable price and food acceptable and liked by the locals Has definite local ambience.

I have LOVED the Breakfast Shack since it was an actual galvanized structure (aka shack). Now that they're in this breezy semi-open air building, the food and the atmosphere are just as good and the prices ain't to bad either, especially given the amount of stuff you get on your plate. Great place to drop by on the way to work or early on a weekend morning.
