We chose Alicia's because some friends had stayed there and appreciated the proximity to the Botanical Gardens.

We arrived fairly late, after 8 pm. The staff was courteous and put us in a room that was clean. There were some lumps in the bed that felt like the sheets hadn't been properly smoothed, but when I went to fix it ... it was a mattress pad wadded up under the sheets. I went to fix that, but since our bed was a double bed and the mattress pad was for a single bed, I just had to remove it. The next day, the pad was gone and had not been replaced by one that fit. We found that odd. Overall, the room was quiet and the bathroom was huge!! Oh, and the internet access was good and the tv actually had Comedy Central, a channel rarely available anywhere!! We liked that.

Breakfast was fine. Well, don't order sausage, but the ham and bacon were good. For being an included breakfast, we thought it was generous. We also ate dinner there one night and it was good, too.

The pool was cool, but refreshing. The hot tub was just warm, but in fairness, there had been a cricket team in the pool just before us and I think they splashed quite a bit of water out.

When we arrived, our credit card was swiped through the machine, and we were credited with the one night we had paid in advance. When we left, they swiped our card again and said the price had changed and we owed more on the room. We tried to get a straight answer, but never quite understood what was going on. We're waiting for our bill to arrive to see what we actually paid, but it did leave us disconcerted.

Another thing they did with the credit card was fill in the numbers left blank by the machine, so they had all the numbers. When questioned, the front desk person said "we do it to everyone," and then showed us all the numbers for everyone staying there. It was a whole folder of receipts with the FULL number of every credit card. (Note to Alicia's ... this policy needs to be changed!!)

I arrived late in the evening, tired from hours travelling, and was not concentrating when the receptionist advised me that she would have to swipe my credit card again as it had not worked. Little did i realise that me credit card details were being copied.

Within the next 36hours £5000 worth of fraud was put onto my card. The card was cancelled and the situation resolved with the credit card company.

However these people have now in august tried again to use my credit card details. I would adivse you to be vigilent in using your card and who you give it to while in Trinadad and especially at this guest house

For Trip Advisor

We at Alicia's House most strongly object to the conclusions drawn by Trip Advisor
member who posted an account of her experience under "Creidt Card Fraud" August 22
2007. It has been our experience that on many occasions a card has to be swiped
twice before it could be read by the machine. This certainly does not suggest that
the card being copied and furthermore we do not have the facilities to do so.As we
understand it, a scanner is necessary to copy a credit card. The fact the funds were
removed from the card therefore , could not and should not be attributed to us or
our staff, solely on the basis that it was swiped twice.

We are most concerned that this guest also suggested that our staff tried to obtain
funds from said card in August. This new accusation pushes our lever or tolerance
for criticism a bit further. Trip advisor members should research the subject of
credit card fraud and be properly advised before tarnishing our image and our
reputation.

She has done us irreparable harm.

We stayed at Alicia's House in July. The staff at this hotel are amazing people. Keisha & the girls at the front desk were wonderful and assisted us greatly during our stay. Breakfast is included in the price and the food was excellent. They also have free internet access.
The hotel itself is old and we stayed in a room downstairs in the basement, which was not very comfortable. I am hoping though that the other rooms are in a better shape. FYI, the hotel is far from the airport, but on the other hand is walking distance away from Port of Spains beautiful parks and gardens.

Hi TripAdvisor,

My husband and I stayed at Alicia's House from January 9 to January 22, 2007. Our stay at Alicia's House was great. It is a small hotel,
but the ambience and the service were both wonderful. The front receptionist was courteous and greeted us with a friendly smile and did everthing to ensure that we were comfortable and make us feel at home. It is exactly as what it says "A home away from home" We enjoyed breath-taking early moning stroll around the Queen's Park Savannah which was ideally located near to the Alicia's House.
To return to some delicious breakfast that came with our package. We enjoyed the local breakfast that were served on Wednesdays and Fridays especially the bake and saltfish with the "organic avocado " that were freshly picked from the backyard. We were amazed to see how the local/owner climbed and picked the avocadoes. The pool is lovely, not to mention the "hot" Jacuzzi, it was out of this world. We took a swim and a hot bath every morning . It was very refreshing.

Overall we would say, we enjoyed our stay immensely, the staff were all pleasant and Alicia's Palace is definitely a beautiful place to stay and we would recommend our friends and relatives.

Thank you Alicia's House" for an awesome stay. Look forward to seeing you again soon.

Regards,

Donna and Franklin

Trinidad doesn't really do tourism so the hotels are pretty basic. Alicia's was clean and cheap but nothing to remember. Booking the rooms seemed to be quite a chore. Swimming pool is clean but cold, jacuzzi is a disgusting milky colour, breakfast is good but deathly slow, and the milk is condensed (ask for skim). Residential area so restaurants and bars are not walking distance.

Alicia's Guesthouse have probably been a lot better... nice location a daytime (in nighttime taxi is necassary as all other places in port of spain), a swimmingpool and jacuzzi (not working...) but the air-condition was VERY noisy and not a soundproof hotel if you get me... nice breakfast, a lots of channels in the room.

My sister stayed here while in Trinidad for my wedding. While she was sleeping someone "broke into" her room and stole her $700 camera, her watch and a couple hundred dollars from her wallet. Luckily they did not do anything to her physically.

The staff tampered with the crime scene and changed the locks before the police could arrive to do an investigation. When we asked if they would call the police the staff told us the police in Trinidad do not really work on Sundays so we should wait until Monday. A lie, of course.

We asked to see the video tape of that night. The management told us they had already watched the tape and there was nothing there. But when the police arrived the manager could not get the tape machine to work.

In the end I leave you with what Constable Campbell from the Belmont Police Station said to the manager in front of all of us: "Ms. Sutton, you need to take a look at your staff and you need to look at yourself. This is not the first time, it is not the second time we have come here for this kind of thing. We have been here many times under similar circumstances. It is hurtful to our image as a country."

The owners of Alicia's house refused to meet with us, have never returned our phone calls and have ignored letters sent by our attorneys. I suggest you stay clear of Alicia's guest when traveling to Trinidad.
