“just good to chill”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

firstly there are too many street dwellers in that area leaving a stench that is very unpleasant (in certain areas only) generally the square is a very cool place that i wont mind recommending to someone who wants to chill and just be in a city kind of atmosphere

Be careful don't go as far the Frederick street because you will be in the unsafe area. Some Interesting old building like church in renovation but not as much

“This is the heart of town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013

You can get just about anything here, food stores, clothing stores, fruits, taxis, the Brian Lara prominade also crosses Independence square...its considered down town Port of Spain...just a bit of advice, be vigilant as there may be pick pockets around just like in any other country,

“Only for eating fried chicken!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

The only time I go here is if there is a steel band concert at night . Since this happens once every three or four years I stay away. If cleaned up it could be a lovely place but it is too dangerous, dirty and noisy to linger for long. Poor trees!

“The Heart of Port of Spain”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

Call it Independence Square or the Brian Lara Promenade or even the Laranade, whatever the Independence Square is really no longer a square but a long walkway that spans the length of the south streets that line the city of Port of Spain from the statue of the Prince of Port of Spain to the west and Columbus Square to the east with Cipriani Statute at the roundabout in the centre.
Restaurants, Banks and some retail establishments are prominent on the Promenade.
