“Bustling city square”

A place to see real 'trini' life but not a great tourist spot and some of the surrounding streets are not very safe. Best to avoid unless with local guides.

“A happening place”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

There are a lot of street vendors here and you can get street food like doubles etc. Lot of souveinir shops with rock bottom prices. The brian lara promenade is within easy reach. Shopping in this area is a good option as the prices are the best.

“Feels unsafe”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

Independence Square is not a welcoming place at all. The surrounding architecture is mostly extremely ugly, and the square does not seem well kept. There is simply nothing here that is really worth seeing or doing. It is easy for a foreign visitor to feel quite unsafe here; one will stand out from the crowd, and one does not have wait long to be asked for money etc. - given Trinidad's enormous crime problem, it's all to easy to imagine how things might then escalate. Not a good way for the country's capital to represent itself.

“Horrible state”
Reviewed July 25, 2012

they reallly need to do some work on independence square. Cepep does a good job of keeping it clean but there is no appeal to it and there i a vagrant at every corner on all the benches so you can't even sit and relaz without a beggar approaching you.

Very busy even at night.
Unsafe as crime rate is relatively high in the city.
