Spent most of a day here, mainly filming birds from the back verandah with some success. Went to see the oilbirds and was able to film these as well. Guide was very informative and helpful. Bit expensive.

“This place is amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

This place is simply incredible. I drove up there during heavy rainfall. The road was a little dangerous, extremely narrow and muddy. But once you get to Asa Wright, you forget about everything else. Had never seen so many different species of birds, and other animals, in my life. Probably the most peaceful place I've ever been to. This is something I would definitely do again if I go back to T&T.

“At one with Nature Here!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2013

So I decided to take an unusual Sunday outing. Instead of going to the beach I opted to take the family to the Asa Wright nature centre. The kids weren't that happy about it because it entailed some walking through the forest and they were worried about the snakes and insects...so it took some convincing.
The drive to Asa Wright is a bit bumpy as the mountainous road is riddled with sharp curves. Tourists venturing up there with a rental car should exercise extreme caution. There aren't any railings along side the road and hitting the edge of the road can result in a very steep slide down the precipice.
Upon arriving at Asa Wright I found it to be most relaxing and peaceful. With the sounds of the various species of birds in the background and the lovely view of the northern range, it was hard not to feel at one with nature that day. The Asa Wright Nature Centre is the THE place to be if you are an avid bird watcher as there are countless species there for the viewing. There is a nice veranda where the bird watchers flock to get a glimpse of that particular species of bird.
The facility offers a restaurant as well. The menu served most of the times is buffet. I was not entirely impressed with the quality of the food for the price. The service there at the restaurant also leaves a lot to be desired. Thank goodness for the serene atmosphere. It makes it virtually impossible to be annoyed.
The highlight of the day however for me and the family however was a beautiful guided trek through the forest. It lasted about an hour or so and within that short time frame numerous birds and flora were seen. The tour guide was also very knowledgeable and friendly. Much to the delight of the kids, there weren't any snakes or bugs that day. I do advise however to apply a generous layer of insect repellent before venturing out as the mosquitoes can be very annoying.
In general I would strongly recommend this for any nature lover and or bird watcher as the Asa Wright Nature Centre is the premiere destination in Trinidad & Tobago for a nature adventure. It might be advised to walk with lunch however, as the restaurant there is not up to scratch at all, not to mention very pricey.

“Guided hike through the rainforest..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2013

We went for a hike in the rain forest with a very knowledgeable and witty tour guide. We saw hundreds of hummingbirds. The hike was easy for our kids. The road up is windy and little unnerving, but this was a fun day trip!

“Great birding visit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2013

We recently went to Asa Wright on a day trip. Even though the road up the mountains can be a little scary, the views as you go along are beautiful. This is a birder's (and photographer's) paradise with many species to be seen. They offered a guided tour down one of their main trails which gives you the opportunity to see a little deeper into the forest and see some of the species that wouldn't commonly come to the feeders. At the Veranda though, you could spend the entire day watching multiple species of hummingbirds, honeycreepers, tanagers, bananaquits, etc. -as well as their resident agoutis and tegus. The staff at the facility is very friendly and the food was very good also. Very reasonable price for the entry and tour. Definitely a beautiful area of Trinidad.
