We have now visited Carriacou 24 times & stayed in Palm Trees for 17 of them. We never tire of the most amazing panoramic view to the South West & North. The fantastic sunsets & occasional Green Flash can be truly uplifting.
Palm Trees & indeed Carriacou is a place to cast away the trappings of the hurly burly of everyday life & regenerate in paradise.
Palm Trees is the owner's holiday home which they very kindly rent out at reasonable prices. It has everything that anyone would need to have a comfortable stay & good kitchen facilites. Some people may not like the fact that there is no air con, but the screen covered, slatted windows catch the breezes and fans are available throughout.
Carriacou is changing slowly (thank goodness it it slow), but it has a unique charm. The local people are very friendly and willing to help. The local shared mini buses still only charge EC$2 - 3 to go into the main town and although some are quite rickety, it's all part of the real Caribbean island experience.
As Carriacou gets most of its provisions by boat – you may not always find exactly what you're looking for. The excellent fish market is also dependent on weather conditions - so sometimes there is no fish available. You just have to be flexible.
Carriacou is an unpretentious, laid-back island. You won't get hassled by hawkers & you won't find coffee bars or a McDonalds. But for a truly authentic experience it is fantastic.
Our review written last year still holds true if you want a bit more information.
Great location away from the hustle of town. Nice quiet place to retreat back to after a day out and about.
We loved our stay at Palm Trees. The views from the deck with it's hammock are incredible. Everything you could possibly need and a little more besides. Sparrow beach a short walk away is great for snorkelling if you are patient. We saw rays, lobster, puffa fish and more types of tropical fish than you can shake a stick at. Diana the owner a very caring host who gave us lots of insight to make the most of our stay. Get down to Deefer diving and do some dives. Amazing soft coral reefs in superb condition. Talk to Matt or Caitlin at Deefer. Deefer can also arrange a trip to the Tobago Cays. A highlight of our trip and we were lucky enough to spend half an hour snorkelling with 8 baby black tip reef sharks. Epic. Bogles round house a must for a great meal and the pizza joint "Pizza Me Heart" in Winward definitely worth a trip for a takeaway.
We spent 8 lovely nights at Palm Trees and would go back in a heartbeat. The house has everything you could need, clean, spacious and welcoming. The veranda offers breathtaking views that money can't buy and is peaceful to sit out day or night. The house is a 2 minute walk to the beach which you have to yourselves most of the time, I think we only saw other people down there 1 day!
Would definitely recommend and can't thank Diana and all her staff for everything!
The gardens even popped up with coconuts from the gardens for us.
It really is a peace of paradise.
Palm Trees is a perfect getaway, whether there are two of you or 5 of you. There is a large double bedroom with an en-suite shower and wc; a single room; and a double futon in the living area. There's an additional shower/wc separate to the living area. There's a lovely kitchen area that is fitted out with everything - and more - that you might need, even down to a mixer and nutmeg grater for your rum punch and pina coladas! My husband and I had the absolute pleasure of staying in Palm Trees for 2 weeks and it has a 230 degree view of the sea from it's wonderful verandah. There's 2 hammocks, 2 sets of tables and chairs for eating outside, and having a wake up call of the waves coming onto the beach and the local birds is just perfect. Diana and Stenna were absolutely fantastic with all their advice and knowledge of the island is supreme to anything we've had before (normally just a visitor book with a few leaflets - which Palm Trees has in addition to all the personal knowledge that they have). We truly appreciated all their help and support to ensure that we made the most of our time on Carriacou. We felt Palm Trees is a home-from-home area and one of my favourite things is Diana's invented solar heated water for washing your feet when you get back from the beach (a large water bottle!). Although there isn't air conditioning - it's a much better experience to be able to leave the lounge doors open at night when you're still up as there are full length net curtains. There are also fans in each room that can be used at night, as well as mosquito nets over the beds.
The beach is beautiful and is only a 2 minute walk down the road a little and then down some steps past a small cemetery (strange location for a cemetery!). You normally have the beach to yourself, but watch out for the "no-see-ums" sandflies and protect yourself with a insect repellant that has at least 50% deet and use this at day and night. This isn't an inconvenience, it is a tropical area after all. You can snorkel from the beach and my hubby saw a very large ray when he was out snorkelling and managed to creep upon a heron-like blue bird. We also went to Paradise Beach where we got a water taxi from "Off the Hook" beach bar/bbq -which is on the beach -to Sandy Island where there is amazing shallow snorkelling.
Shopping on Carriacou is interesting. The main town is Hillsborough and there are a few mini-supermarkets, we ended up going to nearly all of them to get what we needed. Word of warning, if you have dietary requirements (gluten intollerant for example) take some food with you as that type of food is very limited on the island. There is Pati's Deli which has some "international"-type food - mozarella cheese, fresh milk, sorrento ham and I did manage to get gluten free cheese crackers and flour. Just a thought that's all. If you want fresh fish, get to the fish market in the morning and negotiate a price for cleaning and preparing the fish - you pay once for the fish itself and then for the cleaning and preparation.
We flew from Gatwick and it was a 10.5hour flight but it was bearable and we were looked after very well on the flight and on arrival at Grenada (I am disabled). We got the Osprey Ferry from St George's to Hillsborough in Grenada.
Overall, we would highly recommend Palm Trees as the perfect getaway destination and home and could easily imagine ourselves living there enjoying the relaxing sounds and atmosphere. Many thanks again to Diana and Stenna for ensuring that our holiday was extremely enjoyable and our best holiday ever! Thank you, thankyou, thankyou - and we will be back!!!
Palm Trees sits on a bluff & has the most amazing panoramic views from the wrap-around broad, covered veranda across the sea to the western end of Carriacou in one direction & across the sea to the North and to Union Island beyond.
We have now visited Carriacou many times (it must be 24 times now!) in December\January & have just returned from another 3 week visit.
Since 1995 we have always tried to stay in Palm Tress when it has been available & cannot recommend the property highly enough & such good value as well.
It is the perfect size for 2 persons or even a small family or friends. It has most of the utensils & appliances that anyone would need to self cater & the owner ensures that there are some basic supplies already there, such as condiments, spices, rice, flour, cling film, tin foil etc.
Most of the house is screened and it relies on the pleasant trade winds to provide a breeze through for comfort. If the wind fails there are several good sized fans for cooling.
In the separate main bedroom there is a good shower, WC & washbasin. Further sleeping space is provided by a single bed in a separate room & a futon in the main sitting area, there is also another separate bathroom with shower, WC & washbasin too.
Mosquitoes can sometimes be a bit of a pest (just like anywhere in the tropics) and mosquito nets are provided for the beds.
We find that using Deep Woods “Off Spray” available locally provides the best protection & had very few bites at all.
The nearby beach is only 2 or 3 minutes stroll & whilst we were there we mostly had it all to ourselves.
Carriacou is a fantastic island with very friendly people. It is definitely not a “touristy” place although there are plenty of activities to enjoy for visitors.
There are many places to eat out but it's always worth checking what they are serving & reserve beforehand. We mostly prepare our own meals & it takes a while to get used to what is available in the stores (sometimes it is dependent on when the boats bring fruit & veg supplies in).
In Hillsborough there is an excellent small fish market (remember to take a couple of bags with you). You can have it cleaned & prepared for you. If you ask for the fish to be filleted be aware that you will also get the head & bones (the locals use these to made fish broth or soup).
Many people hire a car, but we like to use the local mini buses which adds to the experience of being on Carriacou. A 10 minute easy stroll from Palm Trees takes you to the man road & when you see a mini bus hold your arm out. It takes about 5 minutes to get into the main town of Hillsborough – fares are currently EC 2. Taxi to town from Palm Trees is EC 25.
If you are seeking sophistication you won't find it here, no burger bars or coffee shops but you will get a warm welcome & a real Caribbean experience & in Palm Trees a very homely feel.
The Palm Trees House was awesome.
My wife, best friend and I stayed at the Palm Trees House in early November for 6 nights
The accommodations were very comfortable. The veranda is gorgeous, spectacular views morning, noon and night. And the view from the master bedroom shower is unbelievable!
Diane and Stenna were kind, Informative and helpful. Sparrow Beach (2 minute walk) was perfect. Mostly deserted, great snorkeling, lots of fish and lobsters just off shore. Plenty of shell and sea glass hunting. The Palm Trees is a great location do get away from the stresses of daily life.
The people of Carriacou are friendly and kind. We rented a car from “Wayne’s Garage in Hillsborough. You have to get a local driver’s license but it was easy and reasonable. It was easy to get around. Hard to get lost, there was always a friendly face to point us in the right direction. We made a number of friends and look forward to our next visit. We had a phenomenal dinner at the Round House and a great day boating and snorkeling with Ms. Allison, ‘Isle of Reefs’ tours.
Until next time, safe travels
