“Sophisticated and Tasteful”
Reviewed May 17, 2014

Sugar Reef is surely for the discerning traveler. The intimate boutique hotels pays close attention to detail. Every small aspect of Sugar Reef from the design of the property to the delightful staff was wonderful. Sugar Reef leaves an impression, even for a short stay on Bequia. Every particular piece of the property, including the menu, was well thought out with an understated elegance. The property is natural, subtly-chic and located only a short open air taxi ride to the main port. Sugar Reef has the most beautiful, solitary beach for relaxing on the hammock or for doing yoga on the beach. I would highly recommend it for a romantic get-a-way and will surely make it back for a longer time in paradise. Thank you Judit and Emmitt. Simply and perfectly wonderful!

We had an amazing time at Sugar reef - Bequia is a lovely place, the hotel was superb and our stay couldn't be better. French house is adorable, spacious and full of character, and the views are great. The restaurant was great too - it is on the beach which is just a short walk downhill - but you can arrange a free transfer. Port Elizabeth is a short taxi ride away.

We were really pleased by how management looked after us and made sure all our needs are catered for. Complimentary rum punch on arrival made our day! :) Definitely recommend sugar reef as a place to stay in bequia!

A group of 8 of us stayed at the French House at the Sugar Reef. We had a choice of 5 bedrooms all with their own uniqueness. The view from the balcony was was spectacular and there was always a breeze. There was more than enough seating for all of us where ever we were at the house,on the balcony,at either of the dining tables or at that back where the plunge pool was located. I will say that if I had to change one thing it would be to have a bit larger of a pool. The food was phenomenal whether it was our breakfast served at the house or our meals at the cafe. Chef John is an artist! The staff are super friendly and have that island charm, we just loved Trudy, Rosie and Jarnell. The cafe and the beach are about a 10 minute walk down the hill but you can always call for a ride, we often did for the trek up the hill.
The walk into town is about a 50 minute one so we used a taxi service a lot, this is why I wished it could have been a little bit closer to Port Elizabeth but that being said we din't have to worry about people or noise.
We were all sad to leave and have already started planning our return!

We stayed in the main suite in the French House, we had our own private balcony in additional to the more public space (only a few other rooms so not many people anyway!). The views are spectacular and it is ultra quiet. Breakfast each morning was served at our leisure with a variety of fruits, yoghurt, homemade granola ( we now have the recipe and make it regularly at home) and freshly made banana bread.
We had a fantastic meal in the beach house one evening, looking out at the stars listening to the water lap on the private beach, bliss!
It is a good 10minute walk from the French House to the beach house, but we did not mind this at all, the offer of a lift is always there from the staff.

Amazing place, super friendly stuff, exceptional food!

We stayed 3 nights at the beach house and 2 nights at the French house and they both have their charm.
Be aware that it can get quite windy as it is not in the caribbean side of the island.

Avoid it if you are the big resort type of guy with the buffet breakfast and the big swimming pool!

Hope we come back!

We stayed at Sugar Reef in one of their beach front room for 5 days and had an amazing stay. We managed to get a very interesting last minute discount (we called them on the day of our arrival in Bequia) for the beach front room so it convinced us to go a bit over our budget. Honestly, after 5 days there, I just think that even the basic rate they ask for the room is not so expensive when you compare to what you get at that price elswhere. The room was meters away from the beach, which was most of the time just to me and my boyfriend, so it was amazing. They have snorkelling kit, sea kayak and bikes for guest to enjoy, which is nice too. They can also help you with booking day trips etc, free of charge.

The room itself was very nice. Very styley. The employees are also very nice. and helpful They are very friendly but not intruding at all. The breakfast was good. It is a continental breakfast, but they give you so much stuff that it is as filling as a full breakfast (I believe you can ask for eggs if you want some though). If you want to have a dinner or lunch at the restaurant, just go for it too. We ate there a couple of times and I think it was one of the best food we had on the island and again, the price was quite reasonable compared to what you get elsewhere for that price. The owner comes to say a very quick "hello- is everything ok?" when you eat there, which I think is always very nice.

We absolutely loved Sugar Reef, although I can see it may not be to everyone's taste. It's hidden away on the windy side of the island and about as far away from Port Elizabeth you can get. So if you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place for you. There's no TV, no phones, no air con, no room service, your hot water is heated by solar panels and the restaurant has a simple menu, all based on Sugar Reef's homegrown ingredients. Our beachside room was simple and tastefully decorated, matching the airy feel of the main hall/restaurant which has open doors onto the beach, allowing a lovely cool breeze. Evening meals in candlelight with some soft music playing was magical. If you are looking for a luxury resort, this is not it! The sea can be quite loud in the beachside rooms at night, although we got used to it by day 2. And whilst the Sugar Reef webpage says that it's not for children, they are welcome to come along to lunch and supper in the restaurant (which closes at 9pm, ensuring peace and quiet in the evening for the beachside rooms). I strongly recommend you read the 'Go or No' page on Sugar Reef's website before booking to check that this place is right for you. We liked it so much we are planning a return trip. The staff are welcoming and owner Emmett drops by quite often for a chat, he's a great host. If like us you want simply to relax, look out over a stunning view of turquoise sea and fall asleep listening to the waves on the beach, it's perfect.

Room Tip: Beachside rooms have direct access to their own private beach area with hammock and good Wifi access...
