Stayed 3 nights. Nothing special, but not bad either: clean cosy room and hot water is enough. Breakfast was a bit of disappointment with limited choice. Although the freshly cooked eggs/beans etc made up for i suppose. Some fruit, croissants, pancakes might be nice (ie. continental).
The dinner was as bland as can be, and overpriced (no herbs/spices on the chicken!?)
As I went for touring around Brecon Beacons, it's a fantastic location between all the main tourist sites. If I was to go South Wales again, I'd consider staying here again.

we as a local business often book rooms for our customers in this hotel but never again.
Most hotels adopt a 24 hr cancellation policy which is acceptable but considering that we made the booking at 10am in the morning and due to our customer having problems travelling from London we cancelled the booking at 2.30pm but we were still charged. After querying this charge, The Manageress told us that a waitress had picked the phone up and had no right to confirm the cancellation? After pointing out the fact that their staff actions were not our problem she promptly slammed the phone down.
Customer service at this Hotel is non existent when it comes to the Manageress. Proceed with caution when booking with this Hotel. Lovely Carvery shame about the Customer service. No disrespect to Waitresses but they should not be allowed to answer the phone to any customers

We were visiting nearby attractions next day so Bessemer was very handy and well located. Rooms clean and spacious with excellent wifi. Nice bathroom
Breakfast nice and freshly cooked. We did not have evening meal in the hotel (our choice) - we used the newish Weatherspoons in MT.
Good price and would recommend.

Room Tip: we had room on first floor which overlooked rear car-park.....no problem.

Busy restaurant with lots of birthday parties, but good service, not too noisy, and privacy available in a booth if you were a solo traveller, as I was. Good carvery, unpretentious food. Decent clean bedroom. Breakfast fair but no muesli, you had to ask for fruit specially and the choice wasn't that wide. The yogurt was very plastic-tasting and I left half of it. I didn't have time for tourism as this was a work trip, but the mountains around the Welsh valleys are always scenic.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side have valley views

havent stayed the night as i live local but i have seen some of the rooms & they are clean & comfortable. have been to a few weddings & family meals here & the carvery is the best around by far! you have a choice of meats & you can add as much of the vegetables & gravy as you want, always freshly prepared & delicious. good value for money, friendly staff & good service. recommend booking as its always busy.

We stayed one night. All staff very attentive. Room could of been cleaner although bathroom was spotless. Didn't bargain for a local band banging out tunes till late. Not sure this was mentioned at the time of booking. Food was very good and just a little odd it is on the edge of a housing estate.

We have stayed in the Bessemer hotel in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil three times now, including our honeymoon, and most recently during a visit back home to Wales for the Rugby.

The welcome is very warm, with friendly staff who go the extra mile. The staff are like a family, and will do their best to help you.

The rooms are well appointed, but starting to show some wear. The wood panelling in the bathroom had swollen around the mirror, and the lock on the bathroom door was broken. The beds were however the worst part of the stay. They are VERY firm and the pillows are not very comfortable. We both woke up with aching joints, back and neck, and got little sleep. The floorboards are squeaky so you hear other guests going to their rooms.

The Bessemer speciality is their carvery. The carvery is excellent value for money at around £10 per head for adults and £6 per head for children. It is very popular with non-residents too, so it is best to book early if going over a weekend. We actually judge our home made Yorkshire puddings by the Bessemer's!

If you chose to dine A La Carte, then there is limited choice. Steak, lamb chops, plaice, etc. The food is good quality pub grub and reasonably priced but the restaurant lacks ambiance, especially in the evenings and could really do with a makeover. The carpets in the restaurant are worn and dated, and the panelling and stained glass is very Harvester. If you want a romantic dinner, then this is not the place to go.

The breakfasts are good, with a selection of cooked "Welsh" breakfast or Continental. Coffee is pretty good too.

Functions are catered for at the Bessemer in a Function suite and we were invited along to a 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration. It was tastefully decorated, and romantic.

Public transport in to the main town is good, with buses every 15 minutes from the nearby bus stop next to the roundabout.

In all, we would go for the wonderful staff and carvery, but doubt we would book again for the accommodation. I'd give 10/10 for customer service, and a 5/10 for the accommodation.
