havent stayed the night as i live local but i have seen some of the rooms & they are clean & comfortable. have been to a few weddings & family meals here & the carvery is the best around by far! you have a choice of meats & you can add as much of the vegetables & gravy as you want, always freshly prepared & delicious. good value for money, friendly staff & good service. recommend booking as its always busy.

We stayed one night. All staff very attentive. Room could of been cleaner although bathroom was spotless. Didn't bargain for a local band banging out tunes till late. Not sure this was mentioned at the time of booking. Food was very good and just a little odd it is on the edge of a housing estate.

We have stayed in the Bessemer hotel in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil three times now, including our honeymoon, and most recently during a visit back home to Wales for the Rugby.

The welcome is very warm, with friendly staff who go the extra mile. The staff are like a family, and will do their best to help you.

The rooms are well appointed, but starting to show some wear. The wood panelling in the bathroom had swollen around the mirror, and the lock on the bathroom door was broken. The beds were however the worst part of the stay. They are VERY firm and the pillows are not very comfortable. We both woke up with aching joints, back and neck, and got little sleep. The floorboards are squeaky so you hear other guests going to their rooms.

The Bessemer speciality is their carvery. The carvery is excellent value for money at around £10 per head for adults and £6 per head for children. It is very popular with non-residents too, so it is best to book early if going over a weekend. We actually judge our home made Yorkshire puddings by the Bessemer's!

If you chose to dine A La Carte, then there is limited choice. Steak, lamb chops, plaice, etc. The food is good quality pub grub and reasonably priced but the restaurant lacks ambiance, especially in the evenings and could really do with a makeover. The carpets in the restaurant are worn and dated, and the panelling and stained glass is very Harvester. If you want a romantic dinner, then this is not the place to go.

The breakfasts are good, with a selection of cooked "Welsh" breakfast or Continental. Coffee is pretty good too.

Functions are catered for at the Bessemer in a Function suite and we were invited along to a 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration. It was tastefully decorated, and romantic.

Public transport in to the main town is good, with buses every 15 minutes from the nearby bus stop next to the roundabout.

In all, we would go for the wonderful staff and carvery, but doubt we would book again for the accommodation. I'd give 10/10 for customer service, and a 5/10 for the accommodation.

As I live locally I have never spent the night at the Bessemer Hotel, so I cannot coment on the standard of accomodation; what I will coment on is the food, and in particular the carvery which I have enjoyed on at least a dozen or more occaisions. This is a great value for money dinner, served by friendly staff, who try to go out of their way to make your visit as enjoyable as they can. There is a previous report posted by a Cowboy from Nashville Tennessee, in which he says that this is a town built on coal mines; I would point out that Dowlais where this hotel is located, and the surrounding landscaped hills are built on Iron, rather than coal, and infact Dowlais and the Merthyr Tydfil area once had the largest Iron making works in the world, (the name of the hotel should have been a clue to that), in fact most of the original Rail roads in the USA, had their rails manufactured in Merthyr; sadly the iron and steel works have gone now, and all that remains is a proud history. His remarks about the area having the economy of a third world country, come from a man who visits from Nashville which has the twelth highest poverty level in the USA! This hotel offers economical, clean and friendly accomodation for both tourists and Business men alike who visit the area. There are a number of hotels in the Merthyr Tydfil area, which are suited to the requirements of most people, and the Town offers an ideal centre for touring the Brecon Beacons and the South Wales Valleys, and The Bessemer Hotel is good value for your money.

Room Tip: The Carvery Dinner is well worth the money!

Regular visitor of the bessemer hotel when I am in the area, the carvery is fantastic and the staff are delightful. Although by the time I got to the serving area to get my food some of the vegtables looked a little over cooked and left out, could have been a little fresher but overall I thoroughly enjoyed! Will be visiting again.

Stayed at the Bessemer Hotel 15th-17th November 2013. What a delightful place this is. The bedrooms are really well set out, bathrooms are modern and spotless. All the staff are friendly and helpful. Food was first class, particularly enjoyed the carvary.
Would recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.
We were there for an Elvis weekender and it was our first stay. The hotel was the perfect venue.

Room Tip: 216 is a lovely double room with en-suite bath and shower. View over the front car park.
