“Good Food in an historic setting”
Reviewed November 25, 2011

We didn't stay but visited the restaurant a couple of times during our week in Nevis.

The Hermitage is a very “Clubby” sort of place, nice friendly management and staff, informal, well mannered and courteous. The food is very good but what makes it special is the surroundings, a lovely old plantation building set up in the hills.

Dinner costs around £90 for two, not cheap but worth the experience of a little bit of history.

If you can't afford to eat there then go in the daytime and order a pot of tea, it only costs £4 and you get to experience a little bit of Nevis history at minimal cost.

“Maybe they would have been better if large group was taking all their attention..”
Reviewed May 19, 2011

This is a review of their restaurant not their rooms...although their use of the word "plantation" from the 1860's is not quite accurate (the tour guides tell you they have a sign saying it's from that time period but it's just a sign someone painted and put up...)

Anyhow, based on trip advisor reviews we made reservations prior to our coming to the island. The owner did mention they had a group that evening and suggested we come earlier than our requested 7 pm time. We showed up around 6:15 and had a quick drink at the bar while they were still setting up tables. We sat down around 6:30 hoping to beat the sales incentive group coming from the 4S. We had to wait 45 minutes at our table just to order because they hadn't yet typed up the regular menu for the night. Suffice it to say that we should have been told not to come at all...or to come on another night.

Ignoring the long wait...by the time we ordered the (noisy) group had arrived. Luckily they spent a bit of time in the bar waiting for the last part of their group to arrive.

The amuse bouche was a mini philo basket filled with feta and spinach along with some conch balls and a dipping sauce -- this was the best item we ate that night.
Then, we shared an appetizer of meat stuffed plantains (like pinones) to start; These were okay, too. We both had lobster (not cheap) for our entree which were large in size but too tough and overcooked. I struggled to cut mine with a knife, and would have said something (sure could have used a sharper knife) but servers were so focused on the group that no one ever asked how our meal was or stopped long enough to see if we needed anything else...We had to wait for our check. Left without having coffee or desert.

Considering all this...plus the $40 (plus tip) round trip cab fare there...as well as the high cost of the meal...We would say skip this place if you have a limited time on island -- there are better choices. A couple we met who were staying there, did tell us they'd had a fairly decent meal one night but were looking forward to other places on island...
