Owner description: The narrow gauge St. Kitts scenic railway is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Originally built in 1912 to deliver sugarcane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the "Last Railway in the West Indies" now provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses. The railway hugs the Northeastern coastline where spectacular vistas of ocean, surf, cliffs, and lush vegetation surround you. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep ""ghuts"", or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Dark green rainforests are skirted by rippling fields of sugar can, with the volcanic cone of Mt. Liamuiga rising above the railway. This unique rail and highway experience allows visitors the opportunity to see the island in a very short period of time. Your guide will point out all the sights as the train passes old sugar estates with abandoned windmills and chimneys.

“Brilliant fun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013

The railway takes you through the part of St Kitts where the sugar cane was farmed. Sadly the industry has now gone (due to Europe growing sugar beet & producing our own sugar). It rattles through villages & open country past the volcanoes whilst being entertained by local singers & drinking local drinks of pina colada, rum punch etc. It is a fun way to see the real people's St Kitts & certainly makes you think about their history. There are two decks, we chose the open, upper but maybe when it is mid-summer the lower, air conditioned would be better. The morning run had broken down, so our trip was delayed & apart from the wait, everything was fine.

“Don't Miss”

This beats a coach tour by far. We traveled to picturesque and remote parts of the island in comfort. The onboard hospitality and entertainment are excellent. Be sure to bring your camera or even better a camcorder. The best views and excitement are on the upper, outside deck. The island's friendliness is not hype.

“Rail and Sail”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

We had a very nice time on the railway, and the catamaran cruise. We enjoyed the scenery, and found the entertainment to be good. Some of the reviews we had read said the entertainment was bad, and it really wasn't, it was just fine. Overall, we had a nice time, but felt that the $147CAD/person price was a bit high.

“Rail and Sail Exursion Via Cruise Ship Was Fun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

We did the "Rail and Sail" excursion from the Carnival Valor. First we went by bus to the catamaran (Blue Water Safaris). We got a coastline view and a verbal tour of what we were seeing. Nice people. Professional. Then, we departed the catamaran for a short bus ride to the depot for the train. The train took us the rest of the way around the island. Fun trip. We sat outside in the upstairs section. Since the train was once the one used for the sugar industry, it went right through villages and very near to houses at times. There were other sections where there was nothing but lovely coastline. It is a slow train, but they keep it interesting by telling you what you are passing. There were singers aboard who did a very nice job. They serve rum punches or pina coladas as you travel. We enjoyed this trip and found it to be a nice, leisurely way to see the island.

“Interesting way to see the island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

While on a cruise in Feb 2013 we took a excursion to St Kitts and road the railway. It was interesting to see that side of the island. We noticed just about everyone we passed waved at the train. The Singers were good and the suger cake interesting. This is a one time thing, if we go back to the island we will not ride the train again. We did get a few great shots with our new camera. We saw the other side of the island on the bus back to the cruise ship.
