Owner description: The narrow gauge St. Kitts scenic railway is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Originally built in 1912 to deliver sugarcane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the "Last Railway in the West Indies" now provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses. The railway hugs the Northeastern coastline where spectacular vistas of ocean, surf, cliffs, and lush vegetation surround you. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep ""ghuts"", or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Dark green rainforests are skirted by rippling fields of sugar can, with the volcanic cone of Mt. Liamuiga rising above the railway. This unique rail and highway experience allows visitors the opportunity to see the island in a very short period of time. Your guide will point out all the sights as the train passes old sugar estates with abandoned windmills and chimneys.

I know other reviews have said it was boring and not worth the cost (depending on what cost you paid. People from teh cruise ships are paying a different amount than the locals and people paying at the office), but I enjoyed it. I got great pictures and video. It's worth the money. You may doze off after the first hour, but I stayed awake. You will pass teh black sand beaches. You will see old ruined sugar mills and ride through several villages and see how some people outside of Basseterre live.

Agree with previous reviewers but do think the trip was long...beautiful vistas but lots of poverty and scrapped cars, rusted out buildings etc. maybe would only do this once and look into other excursions in the future.

We liked the ride a lot. It was just right for me. My wife said it was a little too long for her. Cold drinks on a Hot Day. Clean Bathroom. All in all a Very Good Time. I would do this Again.

A double-decker train with A/C below & open deck above. Free soft drinks, rum punch & pina colada served by the ever smiling Ernestine. A (sometimes amusing) running commentary while you enjoy a slow round trip of the island.
St Kittians love their Island & are proud of their past. They want lots of people to visit, perhaps thats why EVERYONE we past waved, including school kids, from wherever they stood.

A must do when here.

This is an excellent way to see the island of St Kitts - both the beautiful scenery as well as the 'warts' . The trip takes a couple of hours and goes around the entire coastline. You can choose to sit in the air-conditioned lower deck with its cane furniture (rather quaint, I thought) or ride up-top in the open and get the best views plus a great commentary by the tour guide.

Drinks are complimentary - including the obligatory rum punch - and we were were serenaded by a local singing trio.

I was a bit nervous about some of the bridges (narrow gauge with no side walls so that when you looked down, you sawnothing but the ground a long way down) but I was assured that the train had been runnning for nearly 100 years without accident.

Altogether, a very pleasant way to pass the morning.
