We took a private taxi tour of the island, and this was definitely THE highlight of the trip. The history of the "Gibraltar of the West Indies" is fascinating, and the views are absolutely breathtaking. My husband and I are active travelers so the climb wasn't bad at all. But if you aren't into hiking / fitness, it may be a challenge for you to get to the top. We took so many pictures because everywhere you look is literally like a postcard! Definitely go see this place. Not sure why it's not ranked #1 in attractions, because it definitely should be.

The views and self guided audio tour allow you to appreciate the history and amazing views of St. Kitts all at once. We rented a car and it was a great way to get there,no need for a guided tour, as the self guided audio rental does it all. If you don't want to drive, a private cab is a good way to go too. Great for all ages, some steep stair climbing to reach the main fortress, but even if you can't do strenuous climbing you can still enjoy the history and view from the canteen level at the parking area. Make sure you rent a hand held tour guide recorder for each person that is interested in the history, as the volume is not high enough to share. Wear sunscreen and bring your hat, you will be in hot sun.

If you come to St. Kitts and don't visit Brimstone Hill then you miss a very good thing, There you can see 6 neighboring island, their mountains jotting out of the sea in the distance, . It took 99 years to build this structure that we see today but it was never completed. On one side of the Fortress you can see the beautiful Caribbean and on the northern side the majestic mountain range. It is truly a blast from the past.

St. Kitts is a most beautiful island. We took a tour around the island. Our guys were anxious to get to the Brimstone Hill Fortress. There is an admission charge of about $8-$10. However, our taxi driver was a bit reluctant to drive part way up to the path to the fortress. The fort sits atop about a hill about 800 feet up. At mid point, you must walk up about a hundred steep steps to the top. Another point is the walkways to various points of interest around the island were generally a bit rough with uneven stones. (Not unusual for very old /historic places. I mention it only for people who have limitations. With a bad knee we agreed to skip that point of interest. Although we missed that view point, we saw many other extraordinary views without the climb.
