“Special Place - Special Experience”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

Best food ever not only at an all-included but best ever on a vacation; owner Gladys Howard (more later) is a Cordon Bleu/Julia Child trained chef, and her recipes along with Chef Jeff and Chef Dianne's creations are unbeleivable. Champagne and sushi dinner at Gladys house on the last night was a blast, and Chef jeff made great sushi -- including lionfish sushi with a gorgeous lionfish skeleton on the platter -- gorgeous presentation. And we have eaten all over the world in Michelin rated restaurants. My diver husband (20 years of diving) finally said he found someplace better than Belize -- the best ever. He was totally impressed with the dive staff and their operations, and the boat. I am a non-diver, and had a great time too -- beautiful shore, good snorkeling. Take a short walk up the beach to "the baths" -- a sandy entry to the water, and sit in the warm spots among the coral karst-heads. A surreal and beautiful experience. Rode a bike for a couple hours each a.m., watched many fantastic birds and chatted with islanders. The island and resort is home to little curly tailed lizards and iguanas everywhere. Felt totally safe on Little Cayman. And Lara at the spa up the road has the "touch." I had a massage and was so relaxed that I ended up spending an entire day in the hammock watching the waves and daydreaming -- not even reading ! Owner Gladys -- she is quite the delightful personality -- her life is fascinating, she is lots of fun especially at the nightly domino game. In fact, it is worth it just to go down to Pirate's Point to visit her ! Her bar is a hoot with guests' art projects made from items found on the beach. We also made new friends -- camaraderie being one of the pleasures of going to a small dive resort or a small liveaboard. Gladys very small staff work really hard and it is very apparent that the Pirate's Point crew are like a small family, which you have the pleasure to join if you visit. Many, many repeat visitors. This is a rustic, Caribbean dive/beach resort. Do go here for a unique experience, great food, great company, beautiful natural environment, beautiful water and a very Caribbean flavor -- I felt like Hemingway. If you want a resort with a raked beach, rows of beach chairs, Macarena at happy hour etc. that could be anywhere in the world (and I like those too sometimes), this is probably not for you. We would definitely go back -- and frankly, we never say that.

Room Tip: Loved the oceanfront rooms with fans only; but if.

We just returned from a week long Cayman trip, with 5 days at Pirates... agree w/all the posted positive reviews - but for us it was the character of the place, the feeling of family among strangers from the first night - I think the resort size, set up, and most of the staff - from the folks who clean the rooms to the owners - we all bonded instantly! The diving was fabulous, every dive master is also an instructor, our daughter (17) did the advanced course and loved it... they have it down, everyone leaves Pirates a better diver.... We would go back in a heart beat (3 of the groups during our stay were multi-repeaters, one person works for the Cayman Is. tourist authority and said "without doubt Pirates is the most unique and wonderful resort in the Islands"... for people looking for something unique and beyond your typical resort - with 4 star food that would challenge any high end restaurant in the States (or anywhere else) - I would say go to Pirates!

Room Tip: Ocean View rooms rock!

pirates point is an all inclusive small dive resort in little cayman and is not for people looking for a private getaway--everthing is done in a very social setting and i think the enjoyment of your holiday is could be greatly enhanced or equally decreased depending on the other guests (estimate of approx 15 people in all resort at any one time) of fellow guests--ours were excellent. we paid $1895 per person for a week. all inclusive being a bit of a misnomer as there are many "extras" that you get billed for at the end of your stay. our extras included scuba gear rentals at several hundred $$, a charge to go fishing, $568 in fixed gratuity and $100 for alternative menu selection --my partner did not eat that meals main food item--for one meal of fish, one of leftover fish from previous dinner and one bowl of poor shrimp salad---REALLY?? in other words they nickel and dime you in my opinion. the staff are extremely helpful efficient and polite when asked for help but overral i would say that they are couteous but not really friendly--they tend not to initiate conversation. the food was not as good as we expected but we are pretty picky eaters who prefer food more on the plain side and we were in the minority of that opinion of guests that week. the bar is open from lunch until 10 p.m. for alcohol , soft drinks 24 hours and it is truly a self serve which we loved. coffee is served from about 6.30 a.m although you are welcome to go into the kitchen early for self service which is also good. internet is available 24 hours in the clubhouse, our verizon phone had no service. the resort was very clean and would rate higher except from a pretty bad bug problem in the kitchen and eating area. location is also good and quite beautiful but the beach is poor---rocky and hard to get into sea which is also rocky. rooms are very nice and clean, the bathroom is certainly not luxurious but clean and adequate. we had a non air conditioned room with a good view right on the ocean, well ventilated but may be too hot in the summer months. pool area was sufficient and clean and there were a couple of covered hammock areas on the small parts of sandy beach to be found. dining area inside was quite small and you are seated with others on tables of 4 to 6. food is plentiful and served from a small buffet area and at dinner you wait for your table to be called for service---again-really?? breakfast and lunch are self serve and you have the choice to eat outside which is pretty nice. all meals are announced with a large gong which sets the guests running to eat. not arriving soon after the gong is frowned upon. the day starts with the first gong at 8 a.m. next gong announces time to go to van around 9 a.m for transportation to the boat which is a few minutes ride and efficiently done. the dive boat is 42 ft and spacious, the ride to dive sites around 20 mins. diving is very good, first dive down to 100 ft max, the 2nd to 60 ft. dive instructors are all knowledgable and will improve you as a scuba diver--they did us. i would say it would be an excellent place to get certified. after 2 dives its back to the hotel and the gong for lunch. afternoons are spent relaxing or exploring the island. a bike ride to point of sand beach is worthwhile--the snorkelling excellent--but be warned it is a round trip of 22 miles around the island. for most people best to get a scooter although the terrain in some parts of the island is treacherous on 2 wheels---one guest tore himself up badly in a scooter fall and could not dive for the remainder of his trip. also, an extra worth considering is the bonefish fishing excursion, very enjoyable and made to be an easy fishing trip even for a novice like me by guide mike. at 7.30 the the last gong signifies dinner and then most guests go on to the bar til closing time. the next day get up and do it again. the dive instructors all had multiple other duties at the resort after diving to include waiting and clean up of the resort. my favorite meals were the chicken curry, barbecue night, mahi, and the sushi dinner. overall, we had a great time at pirates point but if going back to little cayman would probably try southern cross resort which looked more upscale and had a stretch of beach in front of the resort.

My daughter and I read the reviews before we booked at Pirates Point Resort. We are both avid divers, and wanted accomodating type facility. I got to tell you it more than exceeded our expectations.
The diving was fantastic and Pirates Point let us dive our computer (unlike others on the island) The dive crew was absolutely hats off! The Best! Very informative if you needed assistance or let us do our thing in the water! Explore but be careful of the reef as most of the diving is inside the Marine Park!!
The accomodations like room and all is very comfortable and very home style. Everything there made us feel right at home. We got involved in the activities and just became a part of the group. The down side to that is it makes it very difficult to leave.
The food - Well, Sure we gained a little weight - but it is absolutely gourmet cooking and served with the best presentation ever! Glady's place has the best food on the island - probably the best in the Cayman Islands. Period.

To sum it all up my daughter and I are already planning our next visit to Pirates Point Resort. Can't wait.

I am not a diver, but the rest of my family is. We all greatly enjoyed ourselves, and I especially loved the tranquility of the place and the incredible staff. They attended to every need like a good friend would. The food is probably the best food I've ever had. I would recommend to anyone.

We read the reviews before we booked our trip; and after spending a week diving at Pirates Point , we plan to return. The accommodations were quite pleasant, the diving was fabulous, the dive guides/dive masters were outstanding, and the food...oh! my gosh...We dreaded to get on the scale when we arrived home.

I'm a non- diver ( for medical reasons, would love to, but can't) I've been going to PPR for the past 14 years or so just to get away from the real world, to rest, read, snorkel, bike, see old friends, make new ones, eat. Did I say eat?? Best food ever. Ever. To die for....

Why do I keep going back, my friends ask. I have always felt at home. A peace comes over me the minute I step off the plane. Breakfast is always waiting. The staff are friendlier than you'll find most anywhere else. Gladys is a class act and makes all feel welcome, whether you dive or not.

No, there's no mall, no nightclubs, no feeding the fish. There are the beautiful sunrises.. I've never missed one, a night sky that takes your breath away, sunsets over the point, the sounds of palm trees and waves to lull you to sleep..

Ecology. this island is trying so hard to resist development to protect iguanas, natural plants, booby birds, and migrating bird habitats.

If you want peace and beauty, come to my home away from the real world. You'll leave feeling like you've never felt before. In tune with yourself and nature.
