“Exactly what we were looking for”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

This was my first trip to Grand Cayman and my first time renting a vacation condo and I would do it again. Sunset Cove was perfect for a relaxing vacation (we were there the first week of March 2013). We rented a two bedroom/ two bathroom unit and could be on the beach in 30 seconds or at the pool in 30 seconds. The condo itself wasn't overly fancy but had almost everything we needed. (The balcony furniture wasn't super comfortable). BillyBones (the bar onsite) was perfect for a quick bite or a casual lunch. One is able to walk SMB easily once you climb over the concrete "stones", or one can walk up the road a couple minutes and then find a thruway to the beach. There is a reef approx 5 minute swim past the cove that was better than I anticipated for snorkelling. The location was fantastic ; I would definitely look at staying there again.

I'd like to start off by saying that readers should ignore comments made prior to 2011 since the property has change quite a bit since then.

LOCATION: As for location, I think it is one of the best on Seven Mile Beach. It is located at the very beginning of SMB and does not get a lot of foot traffic (especially from cruise shippers). It has some of the widest beach areas in the first 3 miles of SMB (as far as we walked). Many accommodations lose their beach when the tide comes in, Sunset Cove has plenty. There is a hard coral area to walk past to get to the main stretch of SMB, but someone has built some stepping stones to get around it for those who are walking in bare feet. I see this area as a positive as it discourages foot traffic. As we walked down the beach, I felt so good about our location - even the luxury hotels were heavily walked and crowded with very little beach front. People were literally packed on beach chairs like sardines - only inches of personal space. You can spread way out at Sunset Cove!

There is a grocery store about 1.5 miles away - Kirk's. (toward George Town.) It's a bit of a hike if you have kids, but adults would have no problem. It is a full-sized store, so you should be able to get everything you need.
Treasure Island hotel is on the street side of Sunset cove (and share the property). Not anything special to look at. It appears that there are permanent residents (likely staff for area resorts, shops, etc). Once you get past those, the Sunset Cove property is very well maintained.
We felt very safe no matter where we went around Grand Cayman. It felt more like visiting a coastal US town than a Caribbean island (of course the water and weather were far superior!). All major credit cards are accepted as well as US dollars and Cayman dollars. The water is perfectly safe to drink.

Check-in was very easy. Out flight was delayed by over 8 hours, but there was still someone there waiting for us. We simply called them from the airport where we were delayed to update our arrival time. Since we were delayed so long, we decided to add a day to our trip, and the staff did a wonderful job of accommodation us. Luckily the unit we were in was not being rented that day, so we didn't have to change units.

SNORKELING: If you like snorkeling, you will not need to pay for an excursion if you stay here. For beginners, the "cove" is full of several species of colorful tropical fish, from tiny to about 1.5 feet in size. It also has fan coral, brain coral, crabs, rock lobster, flounder, anemones, sea urchins, knife fish and plenty of rocky areas to explore. For more confident snorkelers, you simply swim beyond the cove (through and opening on the ocean side - (west)) and there are three large reefs directly across from the property. The farthest reef is the largest (only about a 3-4 minute swim straight out) with the other reefs in between and to the right (north). Tons of corals (hard, soft, elkhorn, brain, fan, tube etc) of many colors. Fish galore of all colors (I'll post some pics). I saw a few puffer fish, a school of squid, flounder and even a sea turtle!!! There is plenty of reef to explore with no crowds or groups. It's like your own private reefs!

AMMENITIES: This property has a nice pool with a swim up bar. I like the kiddie pool because it is filtered through the main pool (it is actually a small, shallow infinity pool spilling over into the main pool) so it never gets too warm and the water is continually circulated. We never had a problem finding space on the beach or finding lounge chairs. As for activities, those are lacking. Things like shuffle board, beach bocce, volleyball etc. are lacking - but was not a huge deal for us.

UNIT: We stayed in the 3 bedroom, oceanfront units. The 3 BR are the only units directly facing the ocean with full on views and very close to the water. So close, If you are standing in the kitchen, you only see water when looking out the large glass doors! Personally, I wouldn't stay anywhere else. It appeared that just about all of the 3 BR units are similar in quality.

RESTAURANTS: There are several restaurants within walking distance. Coconut Joe's is across the street and has a good breakfast and plenty of bar food options. Sunset Cove has a restaurant as well. We like to cook, so we did not do much eating out. That said, the ONLY place to get off-the-boat fish is on George Town. I thought that was weird, but we asked everywhere and it truly the only place to get fish. Lots of grouper, butterfish and snapper. I was hoping for conch or spiny lobster, but no luck. The fishermen said they occasionally get those items in, but the majority is fish. The grocery stores have seafood, but most of it looked imported, frozen/thawed.

EXCURSIONS: We did the turtle farm and the Atlantis sub tour down the Cayman wall. The turtle farm is definitely worth it. You see large turtles, iguanas, a cayman crocodile and the hit is being able to pick up smaller turtles. We did the "front" part of the park. For more money (and time) you get further access to swim and play areas. We enjoyed the Atlantis sub tour - where you take a submarine 100 feet down the Cayman wall. Absolutely beautiful! But it is expensive. Since you are so deep, the only color light that penetrates that far is blue. It is eerie. It's like you are wearing blue tinted glasses. The sub was comfortable, no ear popping, and climate controlled. Check the incoming cruise schedules and avoid booking during those times and you will likely get a tour that is only about 70% full, so everyone can spread out.

TRANSPORTATION: The easiest way around the island is by bus. They are the size of a large passenger van, seating about 12-15 people. The continually run and you never have to wait more than 15 minutes until one comes by. If you are walking along the road, they will give a toot on their horn as a way of asking if you need a ride. Raise your hand to stop them. No need to wait at the actual bus stops. It is a very safe way to travel. The locals use the bus all of the time and are very friendly and willing to talk about the area. Since they are locals, you may end up dropping them off at their homes or neighborhood on your way to your final destination. It was fun to see how and where the locals live. A family of three can get just about anywhere for $10 Cayman dollars. This is not a 3rd world country like Dominican Republic or Jamaica, so you do not have to worry about crime, theft, scams, restaurant hygiene, high pressure peddlers etc. That said, just use common sense, much like you would if you were visiting a city in the US or Europe. There are plenty of taxis (we only used them to get to and from the airport since the buses will NOT have space for your luggage!). Taxis are another option if you want your own car and to get directly to your destination - but it will cost you. It was $20 Cayman Dollars to get from the airport to Sunset Cove - about a 5-8 minute ride. Not terrible, but the bus is so much more fun!

I think I covered anything, but feel free to email me if you have any other questions!

Room Tip: Definitely splurge for the 3 BR ocean front units! They are quiet (no pool noise) and have awesome...

We stayed here the beginning of Feb, 2013. Stayed at one of the 3 bedroom oceanfront rooms. Beautiful sunset every night. No bugs at all. Enjoyed cooking out on our patio every night on the grill. Clean beach, good snorkeling. Great pool bar. Kid's pool was awesome. Walking distance to grocery store but have to take a cab back with groceries, cost around $20.00 CI with tip. Walking distance to 2 liquor stores. Highly recommend blackbeards liquor store. Dive shop around the corner. Rented a car thru Island Style car rental # 345-946-3233 excellent service. Tell Olney that Brenda and Jay from PA sent you please :) They come to condo and pick you up if you don't rent one from the airport.
We'll be back soon. Enjoy your stay.

Our first trip to Grand Cayman, and couldn't have been happier with Sunset Cove. We were treated well from start to finish by very friendly and courteous staff. Our two-bedroom two-bath condo was clean, spacious and nicely appointed, and the grounds are nicely maintained. A very nice pool, but our favorite part was the recently created cove that makes a wonderful protected area to swim (highly recommend for families with small children). The beach was spotless and a very nice reef just outside the cove to snorkel. Cannot recommend this property enough!!!

I've stayed here 2 times while visiting Grand Cayman. Luckily friends actually own a condo in this complex so I'm not sure of prices. But the resort is private, quiet and has everything I need.

There is a large pool (unheated) with a swim up bar to a restaurant/bar called Billy Bones. Also a large hot tub and a large kids pool. There are plenty of pool chairs, no need to save them, and lots of chairs on the beach as well. The resort has rocked off the water around the beach area creating a lagoon which is beautiful! There is still some rocks in the lagoon so watch your step. My husband was injured (his toe) while in here.

Even though there is a bar on the property, they close at 10 and I didn't really here them at all. It isn't the busiest place but the food is reasonably priced and pretty good.

We did rent a car while there but parking was at a premium and we were not offered a parking pass. The condo manager was hit or miss to catch as her hours are at her discretion but we really didnt have any issues we needed her for. Security is on the property at all times but honestly, cayman is one of the safest places I've ever been. Perfect for families or those who dont want to be hastled by panhandelers or those selling stuff.

This property is centrally located and an easy 15 minute walk to downtown. Or you can hope a "bus", which is a small van that stops anywhere and will hink to let you know they are picking up, for $3CI. There is a great little restuarant across the street called Coconut Joes. Decent food , good prices. There is a grocery store about a 10 minute walk away.

Room Tip: I would spent the extra to have an ocean view. The sunrise and sets are so amazing and the sound of...

This was our second time to Grand Cayman and our first time with a 2 yo child. We stayed in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath oceanfront unit with a fantastic view and spectacular sunsets! Our check in was very easy and the office staff was very helpful and friendly. The property was one of the nicest on the south end of 7-mile beach and a good bargain for the price. We especially enjoyed the sandy beach and recently constructed lagoon for snorkeling. The property was very kid-friendly with a one-foot deep kiddie pool, complete with waterfall and iguanas-providing lots of entertainment for our 2 yo son. The proximity of the property to Georgetown is a plus as several restaurants, the supermarket and the fish market are only a short walk away. The turtle farm was our favorite attraction and a must for families with children. We had a great time and plan to return in the future.

We were very pleased to get into our three bedroom condo where we opened the back glass door and stepped onto the beach!!! The protected area of the beach was perfect for our small children. We were close to all the atractions and grocery store. We all enjoyed the snorkeling in front of the condos. We highly recommend Sunset Cove and are looking forward to returning soon.
