“Don't Miss the Sunday Brunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2011

While we were not staying at the hotel during this visit we always make a point of not missing the elaborate Sunday Brunch at the Ritz-Carlton. We reserved a table, outside under the canopy and thoroughly enjoyed the all you can drink champagne and brunch. You are never rushed and I suggest that you take your time and sample a tiny bit of everything to really experience all the brunch has to offer. It is all about impeccable service and top-notch food at the Ritz. You can enjoy everything from first-class sushi, seafood and beef. Original brunch items such as omelets are offered as well. You have the option of standard brunch with or without the champagne and if you wish you can opt for wine instead which I believe is an additional charge. The highlight for me is the desserts so make sure you leave room to enjoy the spectacular dessert offerings along with the beautiful views that the Ritz has to offer. While the bill for the champagne option comes to $250 for the two of us, you figure you'd be spending $150 for dinner at a finer restaurant on the island and since we skip breakfast and lunch we think it is a great value for what you are experiencing which is some of the most delectable food specialties around.

My wife and I stayed here during the first week of March 2011. Overall this is a standard Ritz-Carlton. It was very nice and I would stay here again. Here are several observations:

1. Yes it is expensive. This means everything, including the rooms and food. I do think it is a bit overpriced for what you get, but it is what it is. If you don't want to spend the money, stay elsewhere.

2. Others have complained about getting chairs at the pool/beach. I've been to other places where this really is a problem, and it was not an issue whatsoever here. We went down to the pool/beach several times in the late morning and there were no problems. The pool attendants take care of finding chairs and setting them up for you.

3. There were some wild kids when we were there, and it was a bit unfortunate, but it wasn't as if there was a 1000 kids like at a Disney resort.

4. Valet parking is now free if you have a rental car (which apparently just recently changed).

5. The "resort fee" is incredibly annoying ($35/day!). It should just be wrapped up into the total rate, rather than as a separate line item that is added after you see the per-night room rate. Supposedly it gets you free Internet, gym access, and the complimentary chairs at the beach/pool.

6. They gym was pretty nice for a hotel, but it was completely jammed every day we were there. They do offer classes (yoga, kickboxing, meditation, etc) at the gym.

Sitting in the water bar and being served by a waiter who came into the ocean to serve you was the best. The room had an expansive ocean view from the 7th floor and a good sized balcony. It was pricey, but well worth the service expected from a Ritz. The only downside was the extensive walking from the lobby to the hotel rooms.

The Ritz Grand Cayman was a bit of a disappointment. We received a "highly discounted" rate as we were attending a meeting and the room was still $500/night (plus an additional approx $100/night for taxes, resort fees, etc). I'm not sure I would have paid this had I not been attending a conference there. The hotel does not live up to other Ritz properties (have stayed in Maui Kapalua, San Francisco....)

CONS:
1 - The hotel is NOT located on the beach side of Bay Road. True, it's only a 5-10 minute walk through the hotel to get to the beach, but none of the hotel rooms have a view. Instead the hotel is divided -- the hotel is on the non-beach side and the "residences" are on the beach side.

2 - A few other reviews mentioned this -- it sort of smells. At first, I couldn't tell if it was just a "beachy" smell -- but it really smells like sewage.

3 - Rooms: the bathrooms have had fantastic updates as you'd expect from a Ritz but the rest of the room was a bit pitiful. Faded carpets, dingy bedspreads, old colorless tube TVs.

4 - Food: the restaurants are overpriced and not so great. We had sushi at Taikun one night: three rolls and two cocktails were $100. Lunch at Periwinkle -- pasta? Really? It's 80 degrees and humid! Who wants pasta?

PROS:
1 - Service. The staff are warm and friendly. They recognized us by name and were very helpful with tours, shopping, etc. Although - they were NOT helpful when asked about nearby restaurants.

If you are in Grand Cayman:
SUNSHINE GRILL - Five minutes walking north of Ritz (take a right out of hotel driveway). AMAZING fish tacos and amazing margaritas. Ate and drank to our content for $60.
DECKERS - Ten minutes walking south of Ritz (take a left). Great food, ambience. All you can eat lobster Tues and Sat nights.
CAPTAIN MARVINS - boat tours. Can book online, pay in cash for a discount. Pick up/drop off at hotel.

The reviews about the service are true--it is impeccable. The staff are incredibly kind, genuine, and hardworking. They anticipated my needs throughout the stay.
We didn't realize that President's week would be such a zoo. The beach and pool area were super crowded and getting a beach chair in the morning was a competitive sport, requiring you be at the beach by 7am if you wanted a chair with a canopy.
We consistently experienced inappropriate behavior from the young guests. Occurrences such as a toddler literally running around the sushi restaurant, yelling, and throwing his teddy bear in the air at 9pm and multiple young children in the cigar bar/lounge after 8pm, loudly whining and crying, became the norm. I was really surprised that no one intervened. The hallways outside the room were really noisy, kids running and yelling throughout the day and evening. We truly were hard-pressed to find a quiet, adults-only area on campus. Even the gym was scattered with pre-teens.
Also, I don't think the policies (in the gym, spa, or on the beach) were enforced and I felt like often times the allowances for the "special" guests turned into real inconveniences for everyone else.

I loved this hotel! The staff was the best of anywhere I've ever been. We booked a garden view room which I was very happy with. It was a quiet room which I appreciate and I slept very well here. We walked across on the covered hallway each day to the pool/beach. I did not think this was a great distance like some others might think. If you are in shape and able to walk then this is nothing. As opposed to sitting all day at a desk job it was great to walk on vacation. The pool was a nice size and there was also a pool on the garden side. Most of the restaurants/spa were on the garden side. The staff that put the beach towels on the chairs for you were great and it felt comfortable and very nice to have that service. The beach and the water here were so nice. Part of me wishes no one was allowed any food or drink on the beach just to keep it tip top but people are pretty respectful and the staff did a good job of cleaning up. Room service was nice and the food at this place was excellent. You do pay a pretty penny for this stuff though but If you can afford it go for it. I am definitely going back.

This was a very relaxing holiday for us. It was not a cheap stay but we enjoyed it and recommend it especially to couples looking for a good hotel.
