“Perfect for us!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2012

We rented a one bedroom unit for 6 nights earlier this month. (All units have 2 bedrooms and 2 baths but since there were only 2 of us we only used the rear bedroom and bath. The other bedroom was open so we used it to store our luggage.) The units are very spacious and ours was very nicely furnished. The kitchen was very well supplied. We ate most of our meals at the condo - all breakfasts, some lunches and all but 2 dinners. A Fosters supermarket is less a mile away but we also bought fresh fish at the outdoor fish market two doors south of Casanovas in Georgetown. One night we grilled chicken on one of the Weber grills on the beach. (Same Weber we have at home.) But we selected Aqua Bay because we love to snorkel and our favorite reef is cemetery which is only about 300 yards North of Aqua Bay. One day we swam to and from cemetery reef from right out in front but its a ways. Staff was helpful and friendly and the road noise was not a problem as some reviewers have said. We will be back next year and try to stay in the same unit.

Room Tip: Check the Aqua Bay web site for photos of all the units.

We've stayed in Unit #3 at Aqua Bay Club for 5 years now and have loved each visit. The staff are very friendly, the units are well-stocked and the location is ideal. ABC is on the quiet, north end of the beach so there are never any crowds and you have lots of space to roam. There are only about 20 condos so there's always space at the pool and always chairs on the beach. We'll certainly be back again next Christmas.

Room Tip: Our family has stayed in #2, #3 and #4 for years. You can walk right out to the pool and the beach...

We rented #18 for 6 days (top floor) and had the best time. The condo was very well equipped, had everything we could think of that we might need for our vacation and then more. The view from the condo was wonderful, miles of blue ocean and white sandy beach. The position of the ABC is great too – well away from the busy end of Seven Mile Beach, no fighting for sunbeds or a patch of beach for us!! The downside is that you have to drive to restaurants so for us a hire car was essential. For information the one night we used a taxi down to Luca (great restaurant) it was $27 plus tip for the return trip.
Pros:
• Very well-equipped
• Stylish furniture
• Good snorkelling outside the condo and even better just up the beach at Cemetery beach (directly out about 150 yards from either the end of the cemetery)
• Spacious
• Deena and Renda in the office were very helpful and so keen to deal with anything we asked
Cons:
• Top floor was not easy to get the heavy bags to (no lift) so if that is going to be an issue might be better considering a lower floor (but would not have such a good view)
• The road noise and chickens people have mentioned (but we took ear plugs after reading the other reviews)
• The balcony area was screened with mosquito/bug netting which was great but there were no ‘lounging’ chairs out there for use, only dining chairs, so it was not easy to relax out there

Restaurants: as I said above Luca was great (we went for our 30th wedding anniversary meal, hence the taxi), we also very much enjoyed Pappagallo’s (see my review), The Wharf (for the food and the tarpon feeding, not as much for the rather odd service, alternating between being ignored and then being smothered with attention!!) and Ragazzi (the best value for money we had, really good food and not over the top on prices).
On the other side of the island - The Lighthouse at Breakers and On the Edge, on the road to Rum Point (amazing sitting on the deck with frigate birds soaring overhead).

Room Tip: Go for #18 you will not regret it

We have been coming to Grand Cayman 3-5 times a year since 2000, and have been staying almost exclusively at Aqua Bay Club since 2006. It is a quiet, small property (only 21 units), well away from the often crowded beaches near Georgetown. The property offers the best shade on 7MB. The beach is a *little* rocky on entry, but ABC actually gained beach in a storm last year.

The units are each different, with decor ranging from traditional Caribbean to Mediterranean, but all are immaculate, and the service is great. Deena and Renda, and all the housekeeping staff are wonderful. If you find even the smallest problem, they are right on it.

I have severe allergies, which makes travelling quite challenging, but Miss Vernice always takes excellent care of our unit, so I know I never need to worry.

Other Recommendations:
Diving: Seasports with Jim and Kevin
Sting Ray City: Stingray Sailing with Chip
Casual Dining: Chicken-Chicken
Upscale Dining: The Wharf or Guy Harvey's

My husband, son and I spent the week of August 20th at the Aqua Bay Club. The two bedroom condo on the first floor was simply top notch. Starting with the shiny tiled entry way that ran the length of the unit, to the immaculate kitchen with new appliances and the sunken living room with fashionable, comfortable furniture. Even the beds were comfortable!! The screened in porch was the perfect place to start the morning and end the day.

Aqua Bay is just a half block walk down the beach to the best snorkeling we have had in quite a while. The cemetery beach has a coral reef with lots of mature fish. We saw something new each day that we went out. The pool and sand area was perfect for spending hours reading. The one drawback was that there were a lot of small rocks when entering the water in front of the condo.

Aqua Bay Club was a great find and we will gladly stay there again when we return to the Island.

Room Tip: While the first floor was awsome, we did hear the people above us.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2011

My husband , five year old son and I just returned from 5 days in paradise. Grand Cayman Island is simply beautiful. This was our first visit to Aqua Bay. My husband and I visited the island last year and stayed at the Westin on 7 mile beach. After spending an enormous amount of money on food we opted to try the condo experience this go round.
We stayed in a unit on the second floor which requires walking up steps. This did not bother me however if you prefer not to use stairs I would choose a ground floor unit. The condo that we chose looked exactly the same as the pictures on the website which was really a great surprise. There is nothing worse than false advertising or severe photo-shopping!

The unit was equipped with everything you may need, including novels for the beach, toys for the children, board games etc. It was wonderful to be able to go to the supermarket and purchase breakfast. We made our breakfast each morning and dined out in the evenings.

We found Aqua Bay to be a really nice find. It is not luxurious but it is VERY clean with daily maid service. It is quiet and the units are spacious. The staff was warm and accommodating. The pool and beach areas were never crowded and finding the perfect chair with an ocean view is a guarantee! I enjoyed swinging in the shaded hammock for a nice leisurely nap as the sun set. They also provide free Wi-Fi which was a great plus.

The down side is the pool is small and basic. The stretch of beach is also extremely rough on the feet. There were tons of shells, rocks, etc so we walked down a good ½ mile to find a more user friendly entry into the water. There was also a lot of families with babies and small children so if you are looking for romance by the pool this is not be the vibe for that.

Grand Cayman in general:
The island is expensive so if that is a concern when you travel think twice before you go. We went to the supermarket (Foster’s) and spent close to $7.00 U.S. for a gallon of soy milk.

We dined at Calypso grill and had a table overlooking the water. The food was outstanding, the ambience was lovely and I highly recommend it. We also enjoyed Pappagallo’s and the Sunday brunch at the Ritz is a must experience. Dinner at Ortanique was disappointing, the salmon was dry and the overall meal was unimpressive.

Sting Ray City, Rum Point by boat and the dolphin experience were also truly memorable experiences.

Final Tips: If traveling with children pack lots of snacks, cereal, etc in the suitcase to save a few dollars. Bring lots of bug spray the mosquitoes are relentless.

Room Tip: Ground floor units will allow you to walk right out onto the pool are and beach.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2011

We just returned from ABC and are just delighted!! It was beautiful and so wonderful as ever. The last time we stayed there was 7 years ago- hard to believe it was so long considering how much we love this place! Renda/Dina are wonderful, and the condo was always impeccably clean. I am always amazed how secluded this place is. I know this is the beginning of the “low season” but the weather was gorgeous! I had been worried that the forecast for our ENTIRE visit was around 60% chance of rain EVERYDAY but I now understand that referred in our case to the very sporadic and incredibly short drizzles that may/may not pass over you. I think it drizzled most early mornings because the chairs were wet, but during the days there, it was glorious!

The condo itself has everything. We stayed in unit #2 and we so happy there. It’s a ground floor unit, so you just walk out onto the beach. It is nicely furnished—you can blend your own pina coladas and enjoy them by the pool/ocean without paying those hefty Cayman prices. It really feels like “home” there—everyone is so nice and you have all the things you need! When we realized we didn’t have a nonstick pan, Ela promptly found us one!

Along with the beautiful snorkeling just offshore, one of the highlights of our trip was visiting a mango farm. My husband mentioned to Renda that he always wanted to visit a farm on Cayman to see mangos (we LOVE LOVE LOVE mangos) and to our delight, she told us her father owns one with over 13 species of mangos! We took a side trip to meet her wonderful father, Mr. Rev who along with Mr. Morris showed us the incredible expanse of their farm! Even our teenagers had a nice time learning about farming there and seeing all the incredible diversity there. It is really awe-inspiring to see how well they use the land, and number of crops they grow side-by-side. They also grow all kinds of other plants there too—incredible. Mr. Rev was extremely generous with us and let us pick some mangoes to take back. By the time we got to our car, we had so many mangoes of several different varieties! (We did respectfully ask to pay for the mangoes and we left a bit extra for the hospitality- they were so very kind.) You can buy local mangos by the pubic beach (Mr. Frankie sells them)—they are a variety they call “Frankie” mangoes – small and yellow—so very good! We also got to try other varieties- some were incredibly fragrant, almost perfumey. Some were more mild. All were juicy and wonderful.

Another highlight was a jetski excursion to Sting Ray City with Jetski Fishing & Safaris (Gordon’s group). Check my other review of that operation—they were fantastic!!

I must echo the prior reviewer’s comments about the rust colored buoy just offshore ABC beach (to the left). There is fantastic snorkeling right there, at least as good as Cemetary beach and far closer. In addition, the big rocks right at the shore in front of the house next to ABC has incredible fish there too. Right in front, we saw a stingray, cowfish, lots of pretty colored fish, a huge lobster (hiding), and three squid on two separate occasions! We also recommend Smith Cove for snorkeling—very beautiful cove, easy access, and lots of nice fish.

For dining, we enjoyed Pappagallo, The Wharf, and especially Yoshi Sushi—all great. My husband who generally dislikes sushi even loved it! Yoshi’s has some cute tables on the floor which you should try to get if you can! Even though they are on the “floor” you are actually seated (hidden space below the table to put your legs so you are comfortable). But so much fun!

We had our best fish & chips at Macabuca, which is also another interesting snorkel/dive site. Even though we are just snorkelers, you can swim out to the mini wall and look down below. It’s popular with scuba divers too and when we were there, we snorkeled above as scuba divers went below into the depths!

Here are a few less-mentioned pointers-

- Chickens. They roam freely everywhere! It’s pretty funny actually. But if you have sensitive hearing as I do, plan to bring the comfortable foamy ear plugs for sleep because anywhere from 1am to 5am, you will hear crowing. (No one in my family EVER heard them—this is for sensitive types).

- Traffic. If you rent a car, the roundabouts may be difficult to figure out. And you drive on the left. You can get used to it pretty easily, but read the instructions on how to properly navigate a roundabout. Oh, and when they are honking at you, sometimes it’s to alert you and sometimes it’s just to say “hi—merge on into traffic”. Also, watch out for sudden stops. People commonly get picked up right on the main street. Vans/cars will stop suddenly to pick up someone, and people may suddenly cross over to get to the car. Be careful. Also lookout for the many cyclists driving on the road.

- Bring your own snorkel gear and you can snorkel all around for free. There are so many sites where you can access all over the island. Be sure to bring a snorkel (inflatable) vest too—some of the sites are pretty deep and if the current is choppy, you will need a break/assist. Do this even if you are a good swimmer. Really.

- Sundays. The stores are not open on Sundays. So don’t expect to pickup groceries for your vacation if you arrive on Sunday. And if you shop early on Monday, don’t expect supplies to be great (they will have been depleted for the weekend and will require restocking).
