“Best value for your money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2008

We heard from two locals that the Sunshine Suites was 'the best value for your money' on the Island - and we definitely agree! We had a wonderful time staying at the Sunshine Suites. The staff was super helpful with recommending tourist activities and companies to go through. They were always friendly and eager to help! We ate at a few places in the vicinity - and the restaurant at the Sunshine Suites was definitely our favorite (the only place we went twice!) The fish tacos are AMAZING! The vibe in the restaurant is perfect - great music, chill atmosphere, and friendly staff. Another great perk, that our friends staying at other hotels in the area did not get, was the complimentary breakfast. The room was a standard hotel-room size and had a kitchenette. There is a grocery store less than a 10 minute walk up the road, so you can definitely utilize the kitchenette and save a couple bucks on eating out. There is a great pool at the Sunshine Suites, and the beach is literally across the street. (Having never been to Grand Cayman before this trip, we were a little skeptical about being 'across the street' - but the hotel is literally across the street from the Westin, which is on the beach.) I will definitely stay in the Sunshine Suites when I go back to Grand Cayman and will highly recommend it to my friends.

The room was clean and comfortable. I was on business and the wireless internet worked just fine. The pool area was well maintained and pool big enough to have a little excercise in the mornings. The Sunshine Grill and Bar were excellent. Good food, service and the BBQ on Thursday night was exceptional - try the Asian Chicken on the grill! I live in Nassau so not being directly on the beach or having a seaview didn't bother me. The comp. breakfast was good enough but the selection of cereals could be improved. As you can see, I'm struggling to find something to criticize! Robert J.

We just stayed there while getting married in GC. We and our guests had a great time. We and our guest found it clean, comfortable, safe, and convenient.

The hotel is not on a beach, and I would not call it a resort, but it is a fine hotel. While there was construction going on, we didn't find it loud or distracting, as some other reviewers have.

The food at the grill was excellent. Surprisingly so. It is a grill, so the food is pretty simple, but quite good. People are still raving about the Jerk Chicken Eggrolls.

We have stayed at many hotels before and this has got to be one of the worst. Yes Sunshine Suites is in a good location but I would NEVER advise anyone to stay there.
The resort has two buildings: one right behind a new construction dev. and the other is next to the highway.
We were staying in the building next to the construction and were awaken every morning at 6 am by a jack hammer, construction workers yelling, and bulldoziers. (This was even on sat and sun morning!!!)
On top of that when you go on vacation who wants to look out there door to a construction dev.
I must also tell you that we were very surprised when we got there and saw that many people were actually living there including tons of medical students. Basically we felt as though we were at an extended stay apartment complex. THIS IS NOT A RESORT!!!!
We also requested a nonsmoking room and the person above us was smoking allowing the smoke to come down through the bathroom vent.
And have you ever been to a RESORT where they keep a count of the beach towels? And if you leave them in your room and dont return them to the front office they will charge you!!!
People DO NOT let the location of this place ruin your vacation.
Their are many many places on seven mile beach that are affordable and will actually prove to be a great vaction

This was the third year in a row that my wife and I have stayed at the Sunshine Suites. We could not be more pleased. The rooms and grounds are clean and well presented. The full breakfast that comes free with the room had everything we needed. The staff were courteous and helpful.

It is true that you have to walk across the road to the beach, but it is not very far. You could be paying three times as much at the Ritz and be walking just as far to get to the beach.

The fridge in the room is great for leftovers, soda, beer, etc. The pool is not huge, but is clean and well maintained. We don't go to CI for a pool -- we have that back home. We are only in our room to sleep and the beds are comfortable. For the price you can't beat the Sunshine Suites.

It is not a chain, it is privately owned and you can tell the difference. They are constantly making improvements around the property and obviously take pride in their business.

We will be back next year for sure.

My wife and I stayed at the Sunshine Suites on our wedding night March 5th, 2008. We had a wonderful experience staying here and would stay again without hesitation.

Pros:
1) Rooms were very clean (nothing fancy but for the price you can't expect the Ritz)

2) Location - Yes it is not ON the beach, but if you didn't know that before you booked and were disappointed...i suggest doing some research next time. Beautiful Seven Mile Beach is directly across the road, meaning you get an awesome location but aren't spending the insane prices of staying on the beach

3) Free Breakfast Buffett - you heard me right...something free in the Caymans!!! On an island where everythign costs more, waking up to a free breakfast before you hit the beach was perfect. They have a good selection of cold cereals, fruit, eggs, hashbrowns, muffins, coffee, juice etc ... everything you would need..and let me repeat, its FREE!

4) Staff - The staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. As an example, when we booked we let them know it was our wedding night. We got a free room upgrade and when we arrived there was a complimentary bottle of champange and two frosted glasses in the fridge with a note from the hotel congratulating us! That speaks to the service you will receive from this hotel!

Cons:
It is hard to really pick out a con, as we only stayed one night and had an amazing stay at that. I guess you could complain that the pool isnt huge, but who swims in the pool when you have a beautiful beach across the road. And yes the road you have to cross to get to the beach can be very busy at times, but at worse you have to wait for a break in traffic. Not that big a deal. Like I said before, if you wanted to stay directly on the beach, do your research beforehand...but for the price and location..this place can't be beat!

My husband and I brought our two teenagers (16 & 18) for 5 nights. If you are thinking of booking a room here - go ahead with confidence! The rooms are absolutely clean and smell of nothing but fresh air. The staff are friendly, helpful and seem to be enjoying themselves (isn't that refreshing!). The pool is small - as our 18 year old son said, it was perfect - not too big to have to walk around it all of the time, but just big enough to warrant lounging around from time to time. The Sunshine Grill is amazing - great food and drinks and not too pricey. The atmosphere suited us to a T. I'm a vegan, our daughter is vegetarian and the guys eat anything - we were all quite happy at the Grill. As a vegan I was THRILLED with the complimentary breakfast - apples, bananas, grapes & sometimes fresh juicy watermelon - not to mention mango juice & orange juice. They also have scrambled eggs and bagels with cream cheese & muffins plus cereal and hashbrowns. I mean really, how much of a selection do you need? I'm sure that they'd be happy to fix some sausage or bacon for a fee if you absolutely have to have meat with breakfast. And you can eat from 7 am until 9:30!! Come back as often as you like. The only time they use the disposible silverware is at breakfast - and if that offends you, you can always bring your own dishes and silverware from your room, right? Actually, they are so nice there, they'd probably give you real plates etc to use at breakfast if you just ask nicely. There is fabulous snorkeling about 300 yards into the water - swim 200 yards straight out to the buoy that looks like a cat-in-the-hat hat and then swim 100 yards out at an angle - about 10 O'Clock. Wonderful coral and fish to see! Also, be sure to take a bus at least once to Cemetery Beach (just about 2 miles or so up the beach) ($2 Cayman or $2.50 US one way) You don't have to swim as far out there and the snorkeling is awesome! Take something to drink with you - there's a nice shady place on the beach there, but no one selling food or beverages close by. OK, so what we liked about Sunshine Suites was it was very very nice, laid back but the staff would do anything to be helpful if you just asked, the food was convenient & delicious and not too expensive, we felt very comfortable and safe. Sunshine Grill is a cute little place too - lots of personality! We met lots of nice people (other vacationers) from Canada, England & US. There is only one thing that I would ask you to think about - you are not right on the beach at this hotel. So, when you want to go to the beach, you can take the chairs that they provide for you just by the office and you walk to the street, cross it, and then walk the beach access between the Ritz & the Westin and then there you are - on a fabulous beach. The street that you cross can be busy at times. There's no crosswalk, so you just wait for a break in the action. The Caymanians are so nice though. Sometimes they will just stop traffic and let you cross! I've never seen that anywhere else. Honestly, we never had to wait long - and we were cautious because of course traffic comes from the direction that you are not used to if you are American. Check out the rates - if you must be right on the beach, I'm sure the Ritz or Westin would love to have you stay there - but my goodness you are going to pay so much more than we did! We loved our accommodations. We were on the 2nd floor. The rooms are nice and quiet, the kitchen and bath were great. My son brought a laptop and stayed connected with all of his friends and the internet whenever he pleased. My husband and I used it too - so nice! Oh, very nearby (go almost to the street and take a right, there's a little strip mall) is a restaurant called EATS. Again, a vegan, a vegetarian, and two meat eaters were all happy campers there. I can't think of anything to complain about - I could gripe that our stay there was too short, but that would just be greedy! The front desk staff were so helpful and friendly. They arranged for a taxi to take us to the airport at 4:45 AM (they arranged it the day before, the office is open from 7 AM - 10 PM). They even recommended a wonderful massage therapist when my husband got a crink in his neck. OK, so book your stay at Sunshine Suites and have a wonderful time. You'll be surrounded by nice people, pretty flowers and grounds - hang out in one of the hammocks some afternoon (heaven). The beach is absolutely spectacular - soft, fine white sand that welcomes you to the ocean that is just the perfect temperature. Oh and if you want a truly memorable experience that is treat for any water-loving animal lover - Call Sotos and book a trip out to StingRay City. OMG! $35 US per person and worth every cent! We went in the morning - they picked us up at the hotel front office at 9 am and we were back a bit before noon. The stingrays are simply incredible and these guys know how to give you a wonderful experience with them while respecting and caring for the stingrays. Billy (our guide) "knows" individual rays and handles them like they are his personal and beloved pets. He will take time with you and if you are comfortable handling the rays he will show you just how to do it so that you and the ray have a pleasant experience. OK, so I ramble. One more thing - this place didn't get the highest ratings for teenagers. All I can say is that we have two and they each had a blast. So, go and have a great time!
