“Smart choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

This property is a great place for your stay in Grand Cayman. It represents a very sensible choice for both a vacation or work, as it offers good value for money. In this review I will briefly go over location, rooms and service in turn.

Location is perfect, just across the street from one of the nicest sections of Seven Mile beach. Walking to the beach will take you about 5 minutes, and the hotel provides beach chairs and towels which you can take with you. Unless you have small kids or are really lazy, this is a great way to enjoy the beach. You cannot have the resort experience, with waiters serving you frozen $20 pina coladas on the beach, but for that there is the Ritz across the street. The pool of the hotel is ok, but I honestly did not care since swimming in the ocean in Seven Miles is better than any pool anyway. The island is small, and driving anywhere will take a short time.

The rooms are very comfortable, if not particularly luxurious or chic. No room has sea view. Beds are large and very nice; bathrooms are ok. Mine was quite large but a bit musty. The kitchenette is essential but there's anything you might need in case you want to eat in (aside: eating on the island is expensive and often not that great. Best meals are jerk chicken from bbqs on the beach - the closest to the hotel is in public beach- and fresh pan fried chicken from a small restaurant on the beach in west bay). The restaurant of the hotel is a good option for meals; keep in mind that guests of the hotel have no priority, and you might have to wait for a while as it often gets very busy. They do offer a takeout option, which comes handy if you want to eat in the room, but only when they are not too busy. They do not accomodate flexible take-out orders, that is you cannot order take out in advance.

Service was good throughout. Receptionists were very kind, and were helpful in many instances, namely in booking activities on the island. Cleaning was thorough. The hotel offers no gym of its own, but it does provide free access to a gym a few minutes away by car.

Room Tip: No elevator to get to rooms on higher floors; no sea-view rooms in this property.

The rooms are on the basic side but freshly painted and clean and comfortable. Most importantly the bed itself is very comfortable. There is a modest kitchen and a large fridge in the room. Oddly there is an oversized bedside table on one side of the bed and then just a skinny gap to the wall on the other side of the bed. The hotel must be well constructed for soundprooffing as it was full with different wedding guests during over 5 night stay and we didn't hear any noise from adjoining rooms or the rooms above. The hotel's common areas are very well maintained and Paco the handsome black housecat adds to the appeal. You can relax under a tree in the gardens to read a book if you don't want to sit by the pool itself. The hotel is in a good location, in the centre of Seven Mile Beach, and a short walk to the inviting sandy beach. You can take light deck chairs from Sunshine to the beach and if you want shade, you can go a further 2 minutes up the beach to the Governor's House. There are a few restaurants and a bottle shop next to the hotel or otherwise it's a 10 minute walk to a larger shopping centre and more restaurants. A light breakfast is included in the room rate and it is okay. The office reception desk had friendly staff although they didn't seem especially informative. The Sunshine Grille restaurant attached to the hotel was pumping every night as it has delicious food and cocktails at reasonable prices. If you can get a poolside table, it is a very pleasant setting for dinner. There are no safes in the room; just a few at the reception desk, and these were all in use, which was a pain. There is complimentary use of the World Gym, which is a great gym, but it's 40 minutes walk away. There are rental bikes but like the safes, there were all already in use. The local buses are plentiful and great; mini vans marked 1 or 2, and they stop wherever you want and cost $2 so it's not hard to get around. You could spend a lot of money at the next door Westin and be right on the beach, but if you want to stretch your holiday dollars, then the Sunshine Suites are recommended for a pleasant stay. The Caymans itself was a great experience with the beautiful beach and reef and lovely people and a safe, relaxed atmosphere.

My family has been visiting the Caymans regularly for the last 15 years and stayed in many of the Islands hotels and condos. On this trip we decided to try the Sunshine Suites and all I can say is that it was awesome.

The staff is excellent and professional. Rooms are very clean and comfortable (more so than many of the expensive hotels on the Beach). The common areas around the Resort are impeccably kept and an excellent place to relax. A light breakfast is provided and that in itself is a huge bonus (Eggs, Cereals, Oatmeal, yogurts, toast, muffins, coffee, juice, etc.). If you feel like preparing something yourself there is a small kitchen in each room with a stove top, microwave, toaster, and fridge. The Super Market (Fosters IGA), it’s a short walk along W Bay Rd. (on average it’s about 7-9 minutes max walking each way). They have everything you can expect from any US Super Market. There is also the Sunshine Grill by the pool and everything is very reasonably priced and the food is delicious (this is where breakfast is provided every morning). If you want to go out and eat there are several other places along W. Bay Rd within a 20 minute walk.

The Sunshine Suites Resort is situated in a very good location along W Bay Rd. It’s a 2-3 minute walk to the beach at most. Public access is directly across the road to the side of the Westin Hotel. This part of the beach is the best along 7 mile in my opinion. There is plenty of room to spread out and the water and sand are perfect. There is a Bus stop directly across the street from the Sunshine Suites if you wish to go to Georgetown. The fare is $2.50 US. You can also catch a bus in the other direction to the Turtle farm for $2.50 US.

Something I would like to mention is that there is a laundry where for a few dollars you can wash anything you might need. Wireless Internet access (the speeds are very good) and cable TV. The place has all the conveniences of home.

The reviews about the Sunshine Suites speak for themselves. You won’t find a more reasonably priced and comfortable Hotel on the Island.

Our family went to Grand Cayman for my sister's wedding May 18 - 25, 2013. When we started researching hotels I came across Sunshine Suites. Every review that I read was great so we decided to try it for ourselves and we could not have been happier. The resort is extremely clean, the rooms are spacious and have every amenity that you could ask for and the staff is friendly and helpful. It is about a 3 minute walk to the beach and the resort has chairs that you can take.

The food at the Sunshine Grille is fabulous. My sister and her husband had their rehearsal dinner at the Sunshine Grille and everyone loved their food. It was a great, laid back atmosphere! In addition, my husband and I had breakfast there every morning (It was free, part of our package) and had a few other meals there. Each time we LOVED it! Food prices in Grand Cayman are pretty expensive, so I recommend eating at Sunshine Grille as often as possible. Great food and portions are huge. You can split a sandwich and just get a extra side!

I can not say enough good things about the Sunshine Suites! Our stay was perfect in every way! We are hoping to come back to Grand Cayman again, and with the prices that the Sunshine Suites have to offer, it makes it a affordable getaway to the caribbean!

Room Tip: We stayed on the third floor. There aren't elevators, but the staff will help you take your lug...

Great place, fantastic food - fish was fresh and amazing; bed was king size, and incredibly comfortable following a long 20 hour journey!
Lovely location, easy access to beach, near shops (we forgot some essentials!), helpful staff, good value. Some adverse comments about breakfast - we found it plentiful and varied!

My husband and I stayed at Sunshine Suites in May for 5 nights, Saturday - Thursday. Overall, we had a really nice time.
The room was a bit small, but it was fine for just the two of us. It would be too small if we had a child. The bed and pillows are great, my husband and I have a King bed at home, and we were both afraid we would not sleep well in a Queen, but we both slept great!
The rooms are cleaned and swept every day, which is great cause we tracked in a bunch of sand from the beach!
The hotel is located less than a 5 minute walk from the beach. At first, my husband was not too happy about not staying in a hotel right on the beach, but once we did the walk (and I told him how much we saved versus staying at the Westin) he had no problems with the walk at all! It is so quick and easy, and cars will stop to let you cross.
The food at the Grill was great. We both loved the Tacos, and the salads are really good as well.
The hotel is walking distance to 2 grocery stores. Also, there is a small strip mall with Eats Cafe, a Sushi place, a liquor store, frozen yogurt store and Captain Marvins trips/convenience store that you walk by on the way to/from the beach.
We went to Camana Bay 2 nights for dinner, and had great meals at Orantique and Michael's Genuine. You can get there by the bus service, just walk along the side of the road in the direction you wish to go, it will honk at you. $2 CI to get to Georgetown, best deal on the island!
We had a wonderful time in GC, and hope to return with a group of friends next year. We would love to stay at Sunshine Suites again!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 115, which was very close to the beach. Would rec rooms that start with 10- and 11...
