We recently stayed 6 nights at Cocoplum Number One (4/3 - 4/9) in Grand Cayman. Me, my wife and 2 girls, ages 16 and 13 went for our annual Spring Break family vacation. First, this has got to be one of, if not the closest condo to the ocean in all of Seven Mile Beach (SMB). You can literally throw a rock from the back patio into the water. This made the view from the condo second to none! The pictures do not do it justice. Literally breathtaking! The condo lies on the south end of SMB just north of Georgetown so you can watch the cruise ships come and go each day (and they come pretty close). You will also get to be friends with the many lizards that roam the grounds. Also there is a fairly small, although nice, heart-shaped pool which we had to ourselves for most of the week. The condo itself is just over 30 years old and it shows a little bit. Look, it ain't the Ritz-Carlton, but for around $260 a night, you get all the essentials and the best view on the island!
Here's the down side: the beach can be very rocky (iron shore) with some pretty large rocks and you will not find an abundance of sugar white sand along this strip of beach like you can further north in the heart of SMB. Be sure to bring water shoes in order to protect your feet from some of the rocky shore when entering the water. If you are someone who wants soft, sugary white sand, this would not be the area for you. However, if you love to snorkel and see some incredible sea life just outside your door, then Cocoplum is your choice. My kids and I saw some baby stingrays literally 15 feet from the shore when snorkeling as well as a vast array of beautifully colored fish, crab, coral, shells and all kinds of cool stuff! It really is a different world just under the surface of the water and only a few feet from your backyard. You are also within walking distance from some good restaurants although I would say the best restaurants are still more towards the heart of SMB. We did enjoy XQ's for excellent dinner (the margarita pizza was especially awesome!). You can also walk south towards Georgetown to Kirk's Supermarket to load up on food while you are there. We did that the day we arrived, buying $250 US ($200 CI) worth of food which took care of most breakfasts and lunches while we were there, saving us a lot of money during the week. Howard (the owner) has stocked the kitchen with all the essentials: pots, pans, plates, glasses, etc. Finally, we did the following and we highly recommend that you do these things too: Stingray City (this is a MUST DO - Incredible is all I can say!), Turtle Farm (our kids loved holding the many turtles), and rent a car and go to Rum Point and Starfish Point while you are there (eat at Kaibo on the beach). At Starfish Point, our kids found starfish and many beautiful conch shells; see pictures. This is about a 45 minute drive but well worth it. Overall, we had an awesome time in Grand Cayman and Cocoplum Number One, just make sure you bring beach shoes and a lot of money as there is nothing cheap on the island!
