“Awesome time With Doc Carey!”
Reviewed May 15, 2011

The Black Coral Clinic is a hidden gem on the Southside of the island, not far from Georgetown. He will tell you stories anout Cayman, or show you how he makes and polishes Tiki's out of Black Coral. He is an interesting person, and is a must see when you visit Grand Cayman!

Doc Carey as they call him on the island is a rare breed... you will not forget your visit to this place... in a very good way. Hey is a great story teller and believe's in people. If we ever go back to GCI we will visit him for sure.

“Fuhgeddabout the Georgetown stores. Get your authenticity here.”
Reviewed April 20, 2009

Carey spent an hour talking with us, as well, and even if half his stories are true he's led quite a life. You must check out his collections of bikinis and marbles (aiming for the Guiness Book of World Records in both). But behind his tattoos, Hell's Angels past and John Lennon stories is a talented self-taught artisan who beautifully carves wood and etches glass (in addition to making jewelry). Definitely worth a stop for a truly unique off-the-beaten-path experience.

“Carey is a hoot!”
Reviewed August 2, 2008

Went to the Black Coral Clinic today and spent a very enjoyable 30 minutes with Carey. His stock of jewelry was a bit depleted - he said he was waiting for a shipment of gold settings from the States that he expected to arrive next week. Still, my wife found a very nice pair of earrings for the bargain price of CI$45, and we also got to hear about the bikinis, thongs, marbles and his long friendship with Larry Flint. A heck of a nice guy, who also makes some very beautiful black coral jewelry. I would rather spend time with Carey than any of the pushy Georgetown tourist shops!

“Hand Made Black Coral jewelry”
Reviewed March 18, 2008

Black Coral Clinic is a real find if you are looking for authentic hand made black coral jewelry. Set in a shack (theoretically it used to be a garage but it does not look much like one now) with the words "the Bikini House" over the door, it is the showroom for jewelry and a few hand-etched glass panes as well as the eccentric owner's collection of thongs, bikinis and marbles. Carey Hurleston (Doctor Carey to his friends) is a heavily tattooed ex-Hell's Angel. All the coral sold here is from Cayman waters, and was harvested from the deep waters some 2 decades ago before the reef was protected. He continues to have a bucket sitting on the floor to show visitors what the coral looks like before he works his magic. Doc Carey personally fashions the coral into pendents, ear rings and bracelets with nothing we saw more than $50 CI ( $62.50 US) The pendents we bought were $25 CI ($31 US) each - a real bargain for hand hand-made jewelry by anyone's standard.

We spent a delightful hour chatting with Doc Carey, hearing about the bikini and thong collection (he wants to be in the Guiness Book of World Records). I asked if he had personally worn each one and he just smiled. We discussed everything from the extensive marble collection to his views on American politics, and received a short history lesson on Alexander Hamilton.

Even if you don't want any black coral jewelry, stopping by to chat is worth the time.
