“Peter Island Resort is Heaven on earth!”
Reviewed June 5, 2005

We spent the week of May 28, 2005 at Peter Island Resort. After doing a lot of reseach on where to go for an extra special trip my husband and I chose PIR. Most of the reviews we read were all excellent, yet a few were quite the opposite and had us concerned.

We have traveled to many islands in the Caribbean and have stayed at numerous resorts - nothing to date can compare to Peter Island Resort!! Where the negative reviews come from really concern me as we found not one thing wrong with our room, the food, drinks, beaches, pool, spa, resort grounds, employees. All is a 5 star PLUS more!

We loved the location of the ocean view rooms vs. the beachfront rooms. If you would like a full review of this resort please feel free to email me as I dont want to take up that much room on Trip Advisor, yet I am happy to share with you.

My wife and I just returned from a week stay at Peter Island. Here's what we think:

We stayed in a Beachfront Junior Suite and really enjoyed it. Had a great view, plenty of room and the A/C worked great. We had a couple of insects show up and one small lizard, but it really was not big deal. The room was within walking distance to everything, beach, food, etc. We were on the second floor and I highly recommend you request that for your stay if you want a superior view. The resort had a gift for us waiting on the bed, and also some champagne and a personal note from the manager congratulating us on our 4 year anniversary.

Deadman's Beach, the main beach is very nice. The beach is not rocky and the sand is very soft, and it is very well maintained and was not at all crowded. You can use any of the equipment there also, float rafts, kayaks, windsurfing, etc.

We had no problems with yachters or their children, in fact security was very tight in kicking them off the beach if they tried to come on. There is a beach they can use, called Little Deadman's, and they were sent there. Really this was never an issue for us.

There were some kids there that were guests with their parents. We asked about this to the manager at the cocktail reception they had, and we were told that children are not encouraged, but not discouraged either.

On our anniversary, we had a private dinner on the beach and the resort fixed a special dessert for my wife and I that I had requested. Also, they made a very nice arrangement of flowers from the island and put it on the table. We had preordered our meal, so all we had to do was sit there and eat it. It was very special- Jenefer, one of the resorts managers, was spectacular in handling the details and they did everything right. I highly recommend you do this!

We did meet some Amway people (a man and wife) and they were very nice and were there on an incentive trip. Not a problem at all, they were successful people there to relax.

The pool is great and the bar is very close if you just want to stay by the pool and drink tropical drinks. The pool has a couple of canopies so there is some shade too.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all very nice. Lunch is at Deadman's restaurant, which is less formal than the Tradewinds restaurant in the evening. Tradewinds has an area in the back that is air conditioned. We got a little hot a couple of nights at dinner, but when they open the doors and the breeze comes through, it's not uncomfortable. Just make sure they open the doors if you are sitting where it's not A/C. Deadman's is not A/C at all, completely open air. Most evenings there was a band playing, steel drums, etc.

Most people we saw daily from the staff took the time to learn our names.

Snorkelling was best on White Bay- There is a guided tour you can go on also that the Dive Shop takes you on.

The island is much larger than you would imagine and very hilly.

The workout facility was nice enough and big enough for as much time as you may spend there.

We didn't go to the Spa, but it is a very pretty facility.

We took the island tour and I would recommend it for some of the photos you can get. There's no extra cost.

We went on Honeymoon Beach one day for a different view. Once again, very private and beautiful water.

We did tour one of the Villas, and it would be nice for a family of 4 if you want to spend the money. In 2 of the 3 bathrooms, there is only one sink.

Email with any questions- It was really a fantastic trip-

Unless something tragic has happened to Peter Island in the past year, I can not imagine anyone really having a complaint unless they tried really, really hard to find one. It's simply beautiful, clean and well worth the price. I searched high and low to find a vacation for my wife and I last summer, and could not possibly have been any happier with my choice.

We were at Peter Island a few months ago and had a very nice, relaxing time. The beaches were some of the best we have experienced, and the service and food were quite good.

My wife and I spent the second week of our honeymoon on Peter Island.
It is beautiful with lots of activates to be taken advantage of. Do the sunset loop with a bottle of wine. Take trips around the island to the different beaches. Take the guided snorkelling tours. Have a massage.

I thought the service was very good, as was the food. It is not an island that is at all well suited to children though. There are a lot of honeymoon couples and wedding anniversary couples reflecting it is a romantic place but to be honest after a week it can be a little much!

My wife and I just got back from Peter Island and had an unbelievable time. Having found this site so useful prior to the trip I wanted to chime in.

First off, we found the resort to be pretty close to perfect. Our idea of paradise includes warm weather, turqiouse water, white sand beaches, great food, beautiful grounds and rooms, and good service. PI exceeded our expectations on all counts.

Having been to a few places prior to this, this was the only time we can remember not having a single conversation with another couple where it was suggested that another resort was better. Every couple we met, and we met a bunch across all age groups, all felt that PI was the best hands down. Better than Little Dix, better than Keneel on St. John, better than Anse Chastenet. etc. Lots of folks were repeat customers (lots of non-Amway folks).

Yes, there were a bunch of Amway people there but so what. The yachters are worse but the whole reason they allow them to use the facilities is simply because wthout them PI would not be able to offer the various amenities they do. For example, the resort has two large, excellent restaurants. (In fact I'd swear it said that Tradewinds is triple diamond AAA.) Without the yachters they claim they wouldn't be able to continue offering both.

One pleasant surprise we found is that the mix of ages was pretty large. We are both 32 and there were lots of couples in their 30's and several honeymooners there as well. We were led to believe in other reviews that the resort is primarily a bunch of 65 yr olds and above. Not true. It is possible that the mix changes after April 1st (since the rates go down in shoulder season, when we went). In any event, we had lots of peers and, regardless, everyone was quite friendly. Because the resort is so small it likely also depends on the week you're there as to the mix.

The spa is wonderful. Book the bohios for masages. They are beautiful.

Negatives:
- very little alcohol in the drinks. ridiculous given the prices.
- very expensive
- oceanfront rooms need upgrading. The beachfront rooms are much better. (we stayed in both)

We enthusiastically recommend PI and plan to go back in a few years.

Having waited more than a week now for a response from customer relations in Atlanta, it is time to reveal Peter Island for what it really is, a haven for boaters and their numerous children, Amway Family and their kids too. We are in our early 40's and are fairly seasoned travelers. Having been to resorts and or villas at the following, 3 in Hawaii, 4 in Mexico, 2 in Virgin Gorda, 2 in Nevis, 3 in Puerto Rico, 2 in St.Barts, 2 in St. Lucia, 2 in Antigua, 1 in the Dominican Republic, and 3 in the Bahamas. When reading trip reports we try NOT to give stock to those submitted by weddings, honeymooners or compted travelers. They tend to be slanted and are usually paid for by someone else. We don't feel the traveler can be real objective if this is the case. If you were to add the good reviews to the real bad reviews it would add up to our experience on Peter Island. Lets first talk about the good. The resort has awsome potential. The food was pretty good. The service was above average. Peter Island has two nice beaches. The resort itself is well kept up and pretty clean. Now it is time to kick Peter Island around a little, OK, ALOT. We stayed in an ocean view room. It should be called a boat or dock view room. Our room was small for the price they charge. House keeping is below average at best. One day we did not get house keeping til after 6 pm. I killed a cockroach on the 2nd day of our stay in our bathroom. It was finally removed on the last day of our stay, by about 1,000 ants. Nice huh! As other reviews have stated there is still a strong Amway presence. This can be tolerated, but here are a few things that we feel cannot. Number one the FACT that boaters are allowed to come onto the resort with their loud and misbehaved kids and do whatever they want. Some of the things the resort turns its back to are: boaters kids using the pool, using resort towels, eating off the snack bar for free, and using resort chairs. Here we are paying over $700.00 a day and watching boaters getting these same amenities for FREE! Not to mention their kids, who were in age from about 6 monthes to 8-10 years old, make more noise than one can imagine in the restaurants. And why have a dress code for Tradewinds restaurant, when one gets dressed up just to listen to whining kids. What is that, when Peter Island on their website states that kids under 12 are strongly discouraged from staying at the resort. The operators at the 800 reservations office need to stop lying to customers when they tell them PI is a couples destination resort. How can this be when so many boating families are allowed onto the island. We were also curious as to why there are no TVs in the rooms. I understand that one does not go to a destination like PI to watch TV. But why then have satelite TV in the ultra small workout facility? HELLO!! We were there for our 20th anniversary and did let the management know this prior to our arrival. Not one time was this ever recognized. Not too much of a problem until we witnessed how PI slobbers all over Amway Family and weddingmooners. We did get a nice massage at the new spa facility, but the rules regarding the spa are ridiculous at best. The only resort guests that can use the new pool or hot tub at the spa are those getting a spa treatment on that day, only. How stupid is that when there is no hot tub on the rest of the resort or near the pool. It is a shame that management will not go ADULTS ONLY,ULTRA ALL-INCLUSIVE during Jan, Feb, and March like some other private island retreats. If Peter Island had to raise their prices even 50% after doing this we would return. It is painfully obvious that the rest of the clients that frequent PI can afford a price increase. Until they get a control of kids and boaters and include drinks in the room price we will not stay at PI again, but would visit from a nearby island. We went onto the Four Seasons on Nevis from PI. There is no comparison. PI management should visit the Four Seasons to see first hand how a classy resort is run. The Four Seasons is about 10 times the size of PI Resort and had less kids while we were there. Please contact us with any questions, Scott and Tammy
