“Overview of Peter Island Resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013

Peter Island is a lovely resort and spa situated on its own private island in the British Virgin Islands. To me these islands are the most romantic and beautiful in the Caribbean – very lush green and mountainous – warm calm blue/green water – warm breezes, great sandy beaches and within view of many small islands whose distant lights at night, along with the moon and stars, add to the sensual feeling.
The small resort (32 oceanview suites - 20 beachfront suites and 3 hilltop villas) prides itself on luxury and service……..and the staff is extremely friendly, professional and well trained. The clientele is mainly young, affluent Americans, many celebrating their honeymoon or anniversary and the villas appeal to families. Although children over 8 years of age are accepted, there are no planned activities for them. It is a quiet resort – guests are friendly but keep to themselves – no beach games are planned, no loud music and no TV’s in the rooms.
The suites are in two story buildings featuring four units each. The Oceanview Suites are located near the pool, lobby area and Tradewinds Restaurant and Bar, while the beachfront Suites are in five buildings adjacent to Deadman’s Beach. Although close together, they do offer quite a bit of privacy. Hammocks are scattered along the beach and lawns near the pool and suites.
Three meals are included in your rate plus afternoon tea. Alcoholic drinks and wines are not included although the water, soda, juice and beer that is stocked in your room are complimentary and are restocked daily – if you order an additional restocking of your minibar you will be charged. The food is very good – I have reviewed the restaurants and beaches in separate write-ups.
The only entertainment that I’m aware of is the Beach Party held weekly at Deadman’s Beach – but since occupancy was low during our stay this event was cancelled. It’s a totally relaxing resort that is quite peaceful but it will not appeal to guests that are looking for planned activities and nightly entertainment.
Since there is a marina on the island, boaters do come to spend a day or two or probably just to enjoy lunch and a day at the beach or for an evening of cocktails and dinner. The gift shop is well stocked with clothing, sundries, food items, liquor, gifts, jewelry and local crafts.
We highly recommend Peter Island for a quick romantic getaway or as a relaxing few days for relief from stressful work. It's bound to be a memorable vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lower floor of the oceanview suites because the hammock is just outside your p...

We have been to several really nice resorts like Little Dix Bay BVI, Caneel Bay USVI, Carlisle Bay, Hermitage Bay, Jumby Bay in Antigua, Regent in T&C and Jade Mountain St Lucia. Peter Island is certainly now one of our favorites.

The resort is on its own island and is completely self-contained. Several large yachts would dock at the marina. Other than that, you are isolated from the outside world. Staff come and goes by ferry. This was great for us, but this is not the place for nightlife or exploring the local fare.

We purchased the American Meal Plan since we were not leaving the resort. This is a great value. We also purchased the inclusive drink package which was break even at best (drinks average $15 each). You still have to sign the bill for everything, but it does not appear on your final invoice. Since 18% service charge is already included on the bill, I did not add any additional tip. I did have a minor problem when the room rate did not match my reservation, but the front desk resolved the issue quickly.

The guests were mostly couples with a wide range of age but we did see a few families. Most the families had teenagers, but a couple of families had little ones. The beaches and resort is large enough that the families had space to spread out but did not infringe on our privacy.

We had a 2nd floor beach front room which is clean and well maintained. I have read some comments about the suite and bathrooms being dated, but they were fine for me. These are not the magnificent suites of Jade Mountain, but they are comparable to other high end resorts in the Caribbean. No TV in the room, but we did have Wi-Fi.

The beaches are long with fine white sand and only very mild surf. The beach chairs are comfortable. Unlike other resorts, they do not have a crew each morning to clean the beach, and organize the chairs and tables. Your beach towel is in your room, not provided when you arrive at the beach. We noticed a towel and half empty water bottle on a chair for at least three days before being pickup. This surprised me since everything else was well maintained.

The food was good. Breakfast bar was fruit, omelet station, cereal, and breads. You could also order for the menu which includes French toast and other treats. Lunch was at the Beach bar and has the same menu each day. The food was good, but the selection did get a little boring. Dinner was very good and the menu changed daily. Saturday Night is a seafood buffet and Wednesday is a Caribbean buffet. Buffet selection was limited but well prepared and tasty. Only one restaurant is open for each meal. You do need to make reservations for dinner which we did each morning at breakfast.

I did the two tank dive each day with Paradise WaterSports. They are very professional and friendly. The boat leaves at 9:30 which allowed for a leisurely breakfast with my wife (she does not dive). We got back at 1:30 for a late lunch. Randy Kiel has an amazing knowledge of the local sea life and history of the area. The diving is outstanding with 76F water temp and 60+ foot vis.

Armando Jenik is a local professional underwater photographer. I commissioned Armando to dive with us and take pictures and video. His photos are outstanding. For 150USD, it was a special memento of this trip. You can check Armondo’s schedule thru Randy at the dive shop.

Our flights were in and out of St Thomas. We took PI’s Saturday ferry (actually it was a 50ft private hired cabin Cruiser) which was very nice. We stop in West End Tortola for Immigration into BVI, but did not have to leave the boat. For our return, we used Caribbean Buzz helicopter service. This was fun. The helicopter was small, but fit both of us and our two bags. The flight was very scenic and only took 20 minutes. The pilot had already cleared us thru BVI immigration, so we only had to go thru US customs when we landed.

Travel Tip:
St Thomas Airport – Most the Northeast flights leave about the same time. Two hours before departure, there is a 45 to 60 minute wait in line to clear US immigration. If you get a red cap porter to take your bags to checkin and then to customs, they will take you to the front of the line. For the price of a good tip, this saves a lot of time.

i think this review should start with why most people go to the Caribbean - sun, water, and relaxation. For that primary reason this is the best place I can think of to vacation. My wife and I had the MOST relaxing vacation we have ever had - far and away.

The location, scenery, and beaches are absolutely fantastic. If your goal is to relax, read, swim, sail, sleep, or get a tan - this is the place for you. If your vacation goal is to watch TV, listen to great music or see live bands, have fabulous food and drink, dance the night away until the early morning hours stay far far away. You will a) not have any fun at all; b) annoy everybody else at Peter Island. One of the reasons that Peter Island is great is that you are protected from the cruise ship masses - they really can't get here so you will not be inundated with thousands of cruisers.

All my comments are, for the most part, independent of cost. This place is super expensive and if you try to view everything through the lens of what it costs you will never be satisfied. However, given the cost of the overall trip, the expectation is that you should be getting premium everything. Premium over other 'nice' Caribbean resorts.

We stayed in an Ocean View Room on the second floor (room 123). This is the third house from the point. The closer you can get to the point the better because you're closer to the water and farther away from the front-of-house buildings. The room was nicely appointed with a comfortable bed. The covered deck has a couple of padded lounge chairs and a table with two chairs. The second floor is definitely the right choice - the decks on the first floor aren't fully covered and when the island gets its frequent overnight showers everything gets wet which makes sitting not as attractive. You also don't hear people walking in the room above you. I agree with some of the comments that the rooms could stand to be updated, but they are generally very nice and if you spend a lot of time in your room anyway you are missing the point of being on the island. The AC in our room started to crap out towards the end of the week.

The main beach is absolutely beautiful and the beach accommodations are very nice. Comfortable padded reclining beach chairs with thatched roof shade cabanas. You can be in or out of the sun as much as you want given the palm trees and cabanas. The trade winds blow directly onto the beach and so even when the sun is full force you are never too warm. It was SOOOO relaxing. The cabanas are spaced out enough and in sufficient quantity that you never feel as though you are on top of your neighbors. And we never lacked for a spot on the beach - there always seemed to be an empty spot for us.

The grounds of the resort are beautiful - they clearly spend a lot of time on the landscaping and it shows. For those looking for some exercise they have roads (paved and unpaved) that run out around the tip of the island. My wife and I went running every morning before it got hot. You do have to run up a (very steep) mountain in sections, but it makes you feel about all the food and drink you'll imbibe during the day. It would be a very strenuous walk too. The views are spectacular. The 'fitness center' is a joke if you're an indoor exercise person. If you're expecting a big airy well appointed fitness area with all kinds of options you're going to be sorely disappointed by what you find - though you can still work out.

For all the reasons above Peter Island would have earned five stars. It was far and away the best island resort I've been to. That should be the main takeaway, but I would be remiss if I did not detail the things they have to work on.

Now for the reasons that it lost a star. To put these in perspective my wife and I are in our mid thirties and live just outside of Boston. I mention this because I believe the resort caters mostly to very wealthy older Americans with different and less varied less metropolitan tastes than younger generations.

FOOD: I'm not sure what all the other reviewers were talking about. The food is good, but it is not great and it is far from fabulous. The menu does not change very much from day to day. About half of the dinner experiences we had we would rate as 'pretty good' mostly because of loads of butter or salt - not because of any kind of culinary genius. We were looking forward to their Caribbean night that they do on Wednesday which they do as a 'local fare' buffet. Lots of options (jerk chicken, mahi mahi, shrip, suckling pig, tropical salads, etc... The shrimp were the only thing that wasn't dried out and tasteless. Major disappointment. Desserts are not even worth mentioning though there were one or two exceptions over the course of the week. Generally try to stick with fish options or anything that is likely to be local. The resort should work on some true Caribbean fare - not stuff that has been dumbed down for American tourists.

DRINK: There are not enough beer options. I understand not having a ton of wine by the glass options because then you have a lot of bottles open and going bad, but beer stays fresh as long as refrigerated. Maybe a draft option too. Drinks were not consistent. Sometimes we would get a drink that had no alcohol in it and sometimes it would be so strong it would make you gag. The other major annoyance was that there was only one guy that was a real bartender. And when he wasn't there you had stand-ins behind the bar that had no business making drinks. There was a woman one night who couldn't even identify what liquor was what nor the wine - I had to help her. Not her fault - management's fault.

SERVICE: Peter Island advertises this whole sort of "Everything You Desire" aura. Not quite. I found the service to be sufficient only, not great. Their attempts to make you feel like you're getting personal attention consists of managers very obviously circulating during meals and asking awkwardly forced questions about your day. It was clearly a forced routine. They're already looking at the next table as they're talking to you. Either train people to do it better or cut it out. Dinner service was generally pleasant, but again not consistent. Drink orders were forgotten about or took 10 to 20 minutes. Much of the staff seemed to wear a forced smile. The front desk and concierge were pleasant, but not overly helpful and certainly did not go our of their way. The guy that ran the boat desk was very surly and clearly not happy to be helping people or to be there at all.

ATMOSPHERE: The music played during dinner and lunch is maddening. Please make it stop. Maybe this music is attractive to the older clientele, but it was terrible. Late 70's and 80's soft/light (wimp) rock mix. We felt like we were in some weird dinner theater from 1982. Eleavator music, jazz, even Yanni would be better. Both my wife and I kept harkening back to Jr. High School dances with the music selection. Again, probably in a nod to the average age of the guest, the meal service was far too formal. If I were them I would keep the Tradewinds restaurant open every night, but with less tables and make people get reservations and enforce them (ie. not every guest will be able to eat there every night - make it truly special). Make the beach restaurant a far more casual dining spot (hightop tables, eat at bars, more casual light meal options, etc...) with takeaway an easy option and a much bigger bar with more seats. The sit down waiter service was too much for every meal. And it meant that every meal took a long time because service was pretty slow.

ENVIRONMENT: I liked the fact that they had a couple wind turbines on the island. It seemed like a good offset against the diesel generators that power the island. I felt good until I came across the trash pit. We accidentally stumbled upon the location where the resort apparently burns its trash - or at least a lot of it. There were also pits where other smelly liquid was dumped (didn't really want to guess what it was). This was well hidden from the resort, but it was pretty distasteful to find. I'm sure it is less expensive than shipping the trash off the island at full bulk, but in the age of 'green' it seems high time that the resort change this policy.

SPA: We both got massages and the spa is a very nice facility with a great view. We were told to arrive 30 minutes early so we could start the 'relaxation process'. Not sure why - all we got was a free glass of water and sat in the lounge for 20 minutes in our robes. My massage was quite good. My wife got a deep tissue massage which was good other than the fact that the woman tried to work out a knot that she kept telling her was her shoulder blade. She ended up with a sizable bruise on her back. Another annoyance - cut it out with the upsell after the service is over. "You need to come back tomorrow for heat therapy." It is expected and forced. Just cut it out. All the guests at a place like Peter Island can smell it for what it is. If we want more services we'll book more. Don't sell them in the name of further therapeutic value.

To echo the words of another reviewer, "I simply don't understand the negative reviews of this resort". My husband and I returned only 4 days ago and everyday I wake up saying, "this time last week, I was on Peter Island". We miss it so already! It's the most beautiful, peaceful and fabulous island I have ever been to.

We stayed in an ocean view room and it was perfect. We considered upgrading to the beachfront suite, but stuck with the ocean view and glad we did. We loved the location being close to the pool, front desk and harbor. It was fun watching all the sailboats and yachts come sailing in.

Make sure to visit all the beaches while you are on Peter Island. White Bay Beach has a beautiful reef and is good for snorkeling. We saw several types of tropical fish and a couple of stingrays.

The spa was awesome, too. My husband and I got massages and then spent the day by the infinity pool, hot tub and enjoyed the very secluded and beautiful beach there.

We took the trip to the baths which was awesome and a great way to see the other islands. Anyone who says the sunset loop trip is a waste of time has no appreciation for nature and amazing sunsets.

The food is expensive, of course, but very good. We didn't buy the meal plan because we rarely eat breakfast and it worked out best for us.

The service is top notch! Everyone who works there is very friendly and helpful. They even opened up the gift shop after hours so we could purchase something.

We will definitely be returning to Peter Island and may consider making it a permanent vacation!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 119. It was a balcony room. I would recommend a balcony.

How does the commercial go? Wanna get away?? Well this is the place. Just a quiet, secluded, relaxing experience. The spa was fantastic, best message I've ever gotten. Wifi throughout the resort and only one TV in the clubhouse area by the main pool and tradewinds restaurant. It's not a place you take your kids, thats for sure. Terrific reception upon arrival on theboat and drop off at your room - no going to a lobby counter. Highly suggest a second floor ocean view room if possible. Only drawback is there aren't a lot of food options on the island. Two restaurants, which rotate each night for dinner. There is a complimentary ferry to Tortola if you wish to find dining there. We will make every effort to return!

My wife and I are now 2 months out from our trip and I still find myself thinking of this as the best vacation I have ever taken.

We stayed in an ocean view room near the point (2nd building in) and had great views of the marina from our front door and the ocean out of our balcony. We thought about the Junior Suites on the ocean, but weren't in a place to financially pull it off. That said, we could not have been happier with our room. The top floors of the ocean view rooms have cathedral ceilings, a king bed, nice shower with views of the marina through wooden slats, and great temperature control. Little touches like and iPod/iPhone bedside radio sure were nice for the short amount of time we spent in our room. We were a 1-2 minute walk from the guest/reception, pool, and Tradewinds restaurant (breakfast daily). It took us about 5-10 minutes to get to our favorite spot on Deadman's beach, only having to bring towels, sunscreen and our books - everything else (including towels) are available on the beach itself.

The real strength of the resort is the amazing staff. They made us feel welcome, and were a lot of fun to talk with without feeling like it was "part of the job." The facilities are impeccable, the rooms restocked daily, and the staff are happy to help you arrange any plans/trips, etc...

Beaches:
Deadman's beach was absolutely amazing for what my wife and I were looking for: relaxation and the opportunity for kayaks, paddleboards, sailing on a sunfish or hobie cat, windsurfing, and snorkeling, etc... There are flags you can have at your beach chair for ordering drinks (or you can walk up to the bar just as easily) and the gym is right there with treadmills looking out at the bay.White Bay beach is your own escape and the best place for snorkeling. With 8 private cabanas, you are dropped off on your own isolated beach (we were the only ones there on the day we went). The staff will bring you lunch and pick you up whenever you so choose.

Other: The sunset loop is a great trip, please do not leave this until the end of the trip as your weather will make all of the difference in the world - i.e. go on a beautiful afternoon. The spa was wonderful, and the prices were in line with other resorts we have seen. There is a great 5 mile loop for early morning walks/runs on the sunset loop that leaves you feeling good and ready for breakfast at Tradewinds. We found the food to be amazing, especially the great selections of fresh fruit in the mornings and fish in the afternoon/evenings. We took a side trip to the Baths and had a great time.

Summary: Without hesitation, I would recommend Peter Island to anyone. It took us 3 flights and the better part of a day to get there, and we would do it again in a heart beat. Not sure that I saw any children on our trip, may want to speak with the resort if they are in your plans.

Room Tip: Top floor of an ocean view room near the point (away from the pool/lobby and with great views)
