We have just returned from our second trip to Peter Island and are trying to figure out when we can go again. Last time was in early September (complete with hurricane threat), this time was mid January. For both visits we stayed in ocean view rooms and had the meal plan (unless money really is no object to you, this is necessary). My husband and I are mid40s/early 50s looking for a vacation that truly allows us to 'turn off' from the everyday stresses (big & small) of our jobs, and Peter Island provides a perfect atmosphere for that. The staff are really fabulous - always professional, generally very cheerful and helpful. Some of the dining staff that we met the first time, such as Raj and Rozelle, were there again and it was like meeting old friends. The food is almost always excellent with maybe one or two minor dishes that don't quite work. A previous review mentioned that the breakfast and lunch menus have little variety throughout a visit, but since the breakfast can be a cold buffet, a hot buffet or a menu item, there seems to me that there is always sufficient to choose from. My bigger complaint about lunch is that I ended up eating a much bigger meal than I needed, but I discovered a way around that was to ask for a picnic lunch with a sandwich that was better suited to me. Despite being higher season than our last visit, we never felt that the resort was too busy or crowded. The biggest difference was the large increase in visiting boats and people coming off the boats to the restaurant, but that never impinged our our experience at all and certainly didn't affect how well we were looked after by the staff. This time we did a visit to white bay with a picnic lunch for supposedly great snorkeling. Unfortunately that was the one day the weather didn't cooperate with some rain but mostly grey clouds that didn't allow great visibility in the water. Still I managed to see a whole different set of fish than I'd seen when snorkeling sround deadman's beach ( the main resort beach). We also did the Thursday boat trip that usually goes to Virgin Gorda. Our captain(Joe of the Tortola-based company Patouche) explained that the current was such that snorkeling around virgin Gorda would be difficult so he proposed an alternative trip to Norman Iland - it was brilliant! All 6 of us on that trip had a truly great time including experienced sailers and divers and me, who can be uneasy around water. We would HIGHLY recommend a trip with Captain Joe anytime! Also did the wine dinner, which was great, and good to meet some really nice people but also have a lot of alone time when we wanted it. In summary, a fabulous destination and one we intend to return to again.
