Chartered a boat to Anegada, and spent the day on the island. Took a taxi over to Bamboo with the family (two teenagers). Just what we were looking for: beautiful beach, snorkeling, and yummy nibbles - hit the spot to hold us over until we got back to dinner on the boat. We just ordered bar fare (conch fritters, fries and chicken fingers), but they were done right. Add to that a great bar and a very friendly bartender making amazing frozen drinks...with shaded and sunny seats just off the beach. We enjoyed it.

My family of four was part of a two-family group sailing the BVI's on a 50' catamaran, so our experience is of day-tripping on islands while living on our floating home. We sailed to Anegada from Virgin Gorda quite early, so we had a full day on Anegada. We rented a pick-up truck and drove to Loblolly Bay -- adults in the cab, younger folk in the bed of the truck!

The Big Bamboo was our lunch spot after snorkeling in the bay. We did not pre-order, so we waited. The wait was not too bad.

The food was good, solid, Caribbean fare. We did not order the local lobster, so I can't comment on that. All of the fish dishes were good, but not superb. My beef (pun intended) with most fish, especially at touristy establishments, is overcooking. The fish at Big Bamboo was tasty and firm, but a little on the overdone side.

The reason for my review … is the conch chowder! In my view, this was the best conch I had in the Virgin Islands. I sampled conch in chowder form, fritter form, and probably three other forms, at a large number of stops in the islands, but this chowder was the best. For starters (again, pun intended), there was more conch in this chowder than in all the other conch dishes I ordered in the islands, combined. It was tender conch, not rubbery. The broth was a simple tomato based stock that didn't overpower the main star, which was the conch. Settle in with a big bowl of this and you won't need much else.

This is a groovy spot for lunch. Open picnic benched dining, very cool atmosphere. We had the snapper and conch stew both great. Service was great and after lunch we snorkeled around the reefs then back to the bar for a few Pain Killers. We will be back

We ate at Big Bamboo as part of a day charter from Virgin Gorda. Their system is that you preorder your food (especially in a group) so that they can prepare it all at the same time and present it to you at a preset time. Their system works well and the food was good. They are most famous for the lobster, which our group devoured. My husband and I don’t like lobster, so we had shrimp (good but much small portion, especially in comparison to lobster) and BBQ chicken (good). There wasn't a great vegetarian option. The sides (not advertised on the menu) were rice and beans for our group. The bar was well stocked. This is a great location for a bar at Loblolly Bay—unfortunately for us it rained most of the day, so we stayed at Big Bamboo the whole time. There was a fire-juggling panhandler, a good lunch, and a lot of drinks to keep us occupied.

We stayed here for five nights and had a great time. Diane, Aubrey and staff were very accommodating. Cottages were great, loved waking up to the ocean front views. Will return!
