“A real winner and nice people”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

Coco Maya opened in the summer of 2012 so this was their first Christmas season. We ate there on 12/28 and they were out of lobster and a few other things, so hopefully they will gauge their food stock better as time goes on. It's a great location and setting. Extremely open on two sides, right on the beach. There is a small fire pit in the sand with couches for lounging. If you can't relax there, then you are hopeless. Could get dicey with real wind, rain, and perhaps heat, but of course we had none of those issues.
The food was a cleverly considered and aspires to Asian-Latin fusion. If you don't like chili powder, pay attention to the menu and ask them to soften up the dishes, including the edamame. Terrific fish options, delicious shrimp curry appetizer, our diverse party of 7 all enjoyed their food. Snapper was prepared perfectly and course size was adequate. Comfortable for kids. Corkage was available. NIce bar space with aesthetic tree/lighting behind. Almost has a Miami vibe with soft techo beat music in the background and the Latin influenced menu.
Met one of the owners, a young woman from Vancouver, and her sister was also helping at our table. Very personable and committed to the restaurant. We are pleased to recommend and would definitely return.

“More than just delicious food.....”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

On a recent trip to Virgin Gorda we heard about a new restaurant located in Spanish Town. We were staying on Leverick Bay but decided to make the trip across the island(a little scary in the dark with curvy roads and driving on the left side of the road!). We had made reservations because we were a party of eleven. We arrived at Coco Maya and immediately were impressed by the architectural features. Beautiful vaulted ceilings with exposed beams in a driftwood wash, gray-green slate wall, twisted root columns, all opening out to a sandy beach that included a mesmorizing fire pit and reclining chairs. Our waitress was charming and knowledgable about the menu. We had a choice of main entrees or tapas items. We wanted to try a variety so we went with the tapas. Everything was delicious especially the fire and ice scallop dish and the duck confit nachos. Don't pass on desserts especially a fun chocolate chill ice cream that is sweet for the first fifteen seconds it's in your mouth and then explodes hot! We would definitely return for a second meal. This restaurant is a great addition to the beautiful Virgin Gorda.

“Best fine dining in VG”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

Favorite restaurant in Virgin Gorda - visited for dinner twice during our week on the island. Great ambiance, unbeatable location, warm & welcoming staff - and most importantly, delicious food & drink. Recommend the tacos, pork ribs, steak, red snapper, curried shrimp, stir-fried squid. Our group shared everything, a mix of small plates and larger entree-size dishes. For dessert, double chocolate mousse and trio were great. Management very receptive to feedback, making their rounds among the tables - highly engaged, great to see. Wonderful, wonderful spot overall!

“Cool ambiance, great food & wine, lovely setting...ok service”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

This place could be five stars if they had enough waitstaff and bartenders. What service there was was excellent -- they just needed a lot more of it! Many tables around us were trying to flag down staff.

That said, the duck confit nachos are delicious (sweet and savory, smooth and crunchy), the pork ribs are spicy and smoky, the chicken wings are piquant and meaty, and the pork tacos are a wonderful blend of crisp tortilla, hot pork, and cool avocado salsa. The wine selection is great although they were out of some selections. The decor is gorgeous -- the design and architecture and fun details like the swing and the fire circle and lounge chairs, combined with the sound of the surf crashing against the beach, really make this place special.

I cannot fault the waitstaff for a thing -- they handled everything perfectly. But for a place this size that is this popular, they need at least three bartenders instead of one, and I would recommend adding another three table waitstaff as well, in addition to a full-time host/hostess to greet arrivals.

It's a kid-friendly place for grownups, and they're aren't many of those with great food, double chaise loungers on the beach, and a swing chair next to the bar. If they can manage to find some more staff who are as great as the ones they already have, this could be one of the best places to eat anywhere in either the BVI or USVI.

Five glasses of wine plus four tapas was about $100 all-in.

Reservations recommended although we walked in before 7pm on a Wednesday and managed to get a table within five minutes.

Hello
Thank you for posting your comments and visiting us at CocoMaya.
Thank you for your feedback re front of house staff. We have just had three new wait staff start with us this week which should help flow on the floor as well as a full time hostess.
I am pleased you liked the decor, and the fun swing..(another is on the way) and the fire pit, both of which do add to the relaxed vibe I think we have going at CocoMaya.
Thank you again for your review
