“Beautiful place, Significant disappointments”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

The fine qualities of this resort are well covered in reviews. Let me list some shortcomings from a four day stay in November. Since management didn't respond to my detailed critique in a survey, I'm posting here as Tripadvisor seems to get their attention. There's no question that this is a beautiful place. The question is whether it's worth it, especially considering its very high cost and difficulty traveling to.

--A request made at reservation and repeated in the "Guest Preferences Questionnaire" (which was never read) for an upper floor room was never received.
--At check in we were taken to our room in a golfcart with other guests, and after a stop at their room. This is like a bellman taking you to your room with a stop first at another guest's room: Very poor service.
--Horrible free wifi: Very finicky sign in was required again and again, apparently after about 2 hours, so I think I had to sign in about 30 times in four days. Why do you need to sign in at an isolated resort? Who would use it who shouldn't?
--Awful food at the Beach Grill, the only restaurant open for lunch. Expensive and sub-Applebee's quality. Expensive food at the dinner options, though better.
--Horrible service at lunch as it was the only place open. Long delays for food and the check.
--Beach erosion leaves much of the beach fully inundated at high tide.
--The new rooms are lovely and spacious. Why, though, wouldn't they put the toilet in its own little room?
--The resort is very spread out. Be prepared to walk a lot, or request a room close to the center.
--An unattended workout room, and it took two calls and over 20 minutes to get assistance with the machines.
--Inconsistent maid service. If we missed the maid's first try, due to sleeping in, for example, it was only very late in the day that she returned.
--Very expensive and very hard to get to.

The biggest single shortcoming of this resort is that the staff are basically not friendly. Many were pleasant, but many acted as if they were inconvenienced. They were consistently lacking in true friendliness and warmth. It made for a consistently unpleasant atmosphere.

Room Tip: Get one of the new rooms and consider how far it is from the center of things--the resort is very sp...

After a week sailing a bareboat around the British Virgin Islands, we decided to spend a few nights ashore. We could not have chosen a better hotel! The rooms are spacious and tasteful; the staff is friendly and helpful; the restaurants are beautiful with scrumptious offerings, and the drinks are strong.
It is a bit pricey, but the ambiance of luxury and serenity is absolutely unbeatable. We will visit again!

Room Tip: The second story "tree houses" are really great. Nice views and an ocean breeze.

We just got back from five days at this resort and were very pleased with our stay. The staff went out of their way to serve our every need and were very friendly. Our accommodation was outstanding, very spacious and good value, and when we ate in their main dining room, the quality of the food was excellent. We especially enjoyed their complimentary drop offs via speed boat to nearby islands and beaches. Snorkeling was terrific on George Dog island. We used their Spa and had a wonderful half day there relaxing after our treatments and could order a nice lunch delivered. We also liked not having a TV for our stay for peace and quiet. Plenty of shade on their beautiful beach which was kept clean and equipped with every water toy. We hope to return again.

Just back from a week (first week after Thanksgiving) at LDB and the three of us (myself and two adult children) had a great time. First some background--Virgin Gorda isn't as easy to get to as some island destinations. It took us a full day--first a 4 hour flight from the East Coast to St. Thomas, 2 hour layover there and then a 15 minute ride via Air Sunshine on a Cessna that seats around 10 people. This was the best option for us at the time we booked, but we understand that Air Seaborne has hooked up with Jet Blue and that may be a better option now. There are also ferry options. Bottom line--you will spend a considerable time traveling to get to the resort. (And getting back to wherever.) Second, the island has a small population and only a few eating options outside of the resort. (Spanish Town is a few streets.) We never ate outside of the resort because our food standards for a resort aren't extremely demanding (more on that later). The resort itself is gorgeous--a beautiful beach, perhaps 1/2 to 1/3 mile long with most of the rooms set back perhaps 100 feet from the beach. We had an ocean view room which was more than adequate--enough towels, double sink, water and complimentary sodas in the fridge, complimentary bottle of rum. From our perspective the reason to come to the islands--what makes these places unique-- are the beaches and water sports (specifically, snorkeling). Here, the resort is first rate. We went on several beach drops--complimentary-- and snorkeled everywhere. (Great snorkeling!) There is also first rate snorkeling right on the resort property; we snorkeled in the bay and saw the resort's own reef, turtles, two stingrays. We also saw an enormous school of minnows one day right from the boat dock. In contrast to another resort I had been to (Ritz on St. Thomas), we were encouraged to take any snorkeling gear we needed for the entire week. (At first we didn't understand why we were asked if we needed a bag to keep our gear when we said that we only needed fins. Then we realized that the staff expected us to keep our gear until we turned it in at the end of our stay.) We also went on the Norman Island snorkeling trip, which was an extra $100 a person. That was fabulous and the highlight of the trip for my kids. We had two open water snorkeling drops and ate at one of the floating restaurants/bars with a 'island' vibe in the area. Also included were complimentary drinks. The activities staff couldn't have been nicer and informative about best snorkeling spots, weather inquiries, giving us extra towels. We also took a cab from the resort for a visit to the Baths. This was a personal highlight. Again, good snorkeling, interesting beach and a walk through the "caves". The food--our family are foodies. We have been to top restaurants around the world. No resort can match that and I don't expect it to. We are pleased with good, but not great, extraordinary or gourmet, on a trip like this. We expect that much of the food will be imported when on a small island. The food was very good from this perspective. The breakfast buffet was more than enough to last one until dinner. There is a complimentary "high tea" daily at 4:30, which was a very nice snack. (Love those scones!) Lastly, this package doesn't come cheap (complimentary must be paid for somehow), but the resort has a very laid back feel. Note that there is a 10% daily resort fee tacked onto the room rate and all meals/drinks come with a mandatory 18% gratuity. In contrast to the Ritz. this made the place have more of an "all inclusive" feeling, which I enjoyed. I hate to worry about whom to tip and how much when I'm at a resort. Finally, we met honeymooners galore here; others were wedding guests. A lot of the non-wedding/honeymoon couples were middle aged. Not surprising when considering the cost. The little kids we saw seemed to be having fun with their folks. There was no camp in session, which would have been a requirement when my kids were small. But then, when my kids were small, I wouldn't have gone to a resort like this at all. Name brand hotels--Marriotts, Westins, etc.--probably would do the kid thing better. The Ritz seemed to be very family friendly. LDB is more adult oriented. We never went to the pool or the spa, played tennis or hiked in the area. All these activities are fun/refreshing, but I'm not going to travel 1200 or so miles to have a message that I could have at home. All in all--a great time!

LDB is an absolute gem! My wife and I were there for four nights on our honeymoon while island hopping in the Virgin Islands - and it turned out to be the best by far. Virgin Gorda is a bit further than the rest of the standard islands, and that benefits it greatly. After a 1-1/2 hour ferry ride, we found ourselves at the small port and realized it was a simple 3 minute taxi ride to the resort. They granted us a free upgrade and provided us a bottle of champagne along with the typical bottle of island rum. The room was very spacious, and extremely comfortable. The outdoor shower was amazing; the warm fresh tropical air to breath as you freshen up. There was also a his and hers counter top duet, and a large tub (although we never got in). The balcony was huge, and included a very comfortable couch and set of chairs that were great for lounging and taking in the sights and natural sounds. The beachfront was very private with crystal clear water, pristine beaches, and plenty of amenities / chairs / tables - and good service from the staff. There was a great variety of marine life just inside the bay, including sea turtles and sting rays; we spent hours and hours snorkeling around. The food was really good from breakfast, through lunch on the beach, to their nice restaurants. Naturally, the prices were a bit high - but it was worth every penny! The service proved to be very helpful, and there was someone there to help out at any given time.
I would recommend this place to friends and family over any other I have been to before, and a return trip will be in the works shortly; back in Denver now with temperatures below zero degrees Fahrenheit - and seriously can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We stayed a medium distance from the main lodge, and it was more than private enough. We were on th...

My wife and I just returned from our Honeymoon at LDB and it was absolute perfection. We've traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and USA and were thoroughly impressed with the location, room, and staff. We rate it up with our other favorites including the Lodge at Pebble Beach and the Sanctuary in Kiawah .

This was our first visit to Virgin Gorda and will certainly not be our last - we're already planning to celebrate our first anniversary at LDB.

I could write 5 pages about this place, and our trip - it was a dream come true, and I am not easily impressed. There is a reason people go back to this place year after year, it is just "special". We have already booked again for next year, and we usually have a "no place twice" rule in our family - that should say enough.

We decided to take our 1.5 year old with us, and we could not have been ANY happier. Upon glorious arrival, we checked in to our gorgeous room (#61) that was 20 feet from the beach. There was a crib, cookies, baby bathtub, baby shapmpoo, monitor, and high chair all set up. Talk about easy. We called and ordered room service and realized that kids under 5 eat free.....UNREAL!! We had the same nanny come and watch our child everyday (Maria - absolutely the BEST!). It was a dream vacation and what makes this place so great is the people. #1, they love babies - which is so great when you are traveling with kids. We could literally spend 15 minutes at the buffet line, and all of the waitstaff would be entertaining our child. The service is the best I have ever come across.

LDB is possibly the most gorgeous place I have ever stayed. You just sit outside your room and are in awe of the view. The pool is INSANELY gorgeous, and it looks like it was built right into nature. They have lovely people that bring snacks there as well, bonus.

LDB does't nickel and dime you. Yes, you may pay a bit more for rooms, but you get SO MUCH. They have complimentary suntan lotion for kids and adults. A free bottle of rum in the room. Snorkeling gear....beach drops (you will never find that anywhere else) and very nice non-motorized boats to use. They do a very nice Managers reception on Monday nights which was great, good company, food, and drinks. The maid service was fantastic.

SPA - greatest spa (and i love my spas) I have ever been to. The view is indescribable. The service was perfect. Each service is done in its own small house, and after your sevice you are allowed to sit on your private patio and enjoy the view. Greatest spa ever.
Just go here. My head is spinning with how wonderful it is, I can't put into words. Few other things not to miss: the two hikes that depart from the hotel, Hog Heaven (unreal view), great dinner at Cocomaya, hit up the rum bars in Spanish town, get the Lobster lunch for a beach drop. Also, we flew into VG but flew out of Tortola. I absolutely loved the ferry ride back to Tortola. I kind of wish we had taken it into the resort.

Room Tip: Room #61 - we could have our baby sleeping, with the monitor stretching right to our beach chairs. G...
