“Wonderful BBQ spread”
Reviewed May 30, 2014

We happened to sail to Leverick Bay on a Friday and so we made reservations for the BBQ Buffett. So glad we did. The roasted pig was great, but the pieces of cracking were even better. The ribs were probably the best ever, we were still talking about them days later. Great variety of side dishes and also chicken and fish. The jumbies and the music were very entertaining. Would love to do this again.

“Gourmet food in Paradise”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

To be specific this review is about the formal restaurant (upstairs) at Leverick Bay, and not the cafe or "Jumbies" lower price point facilities adjacent. We enjoyed a meal at the restaurant last week and were actually stunned at what came out of the kitchen. The chef prepares locally sourced foods whenever possible and we had two lobster appetizers (Rissotto, and a lightly cooked "sashimi" with a sauce from heaven) that were comparable to anything we had ever experienced at Michelin starred restaurants in our travels. Our entrees were equally brilliant, a Wagyu beef presentation and a local Snapper excelled on every level from taste to presentation. We paired the food with an excellent French Chardonnay from an equally remarkable wine celar. After the meal we enquired where the chef came from and were informed that he had trained at the culinary institute and later worked under various top chefs including Jean George.... nuff said.

“Jumbies was great”
Reviewed May 23, 2014

Had dinner and drinks at Jumbies on the sand in Leverick Bay. Drinks were great, food was good. Velda, our waitress, was superb! What a fun dinner, and drinks the next afternoon.

“Unsavory Management Practice”
Reviewed May 10, 2014

We ate lunch at the cafe part of the restaurant most days after diving in the morning. I think the proper name for the cafe is 'the Cove', there is also a proper restaurant upstairs and a bar named 'Jumbies' adjacent but we did not stop in at either of these. The Cove is on a shelter deck with outdoor seating overlooking a small beach and the harbour.
We ate several things there; pizza, a quesadilla, tacos and burgers. All were good but a bit expensive for what they are. The staff were pleasant but did seem a bit detached from their work.
Two things to make note of. We ordered a dish with which fries could be added for $4, when the bill arrived the charge was for $6, the cost of a separate order of fries. I brought it to the attention of the waitress and she subtracted $2. This was probably a legit error but check your bill. Second, there is a service charge on the bill, there is also a line for the tip on the credit card slip, I did not notice this the first time we ate there and doubled up on the tip. The service was OK but not worth a double tip. With regards to the service charge, one of our party asked about how it is distributed and we were informed that 1/2 went to the owners of the resort and only 1/2 went to the staff. I personally find this repulsive. If the meal cost X dollars put that on the menu and leave the service charge for the wage earning staff.
The location is convenient for those that are diving and the food was good but the fact that the owners retain a portion of the service charge curtailed our lunches at this particular establishment. I would not frequent it again.

Dear MurTheExplorer

I would like to extend my sincere apologies for the miss leading information you were given regarding the 15% gratuity. The gratuity is set up as an incentive program for all staff that works for the Restaurant in order to make your stay enjoyable. All of it except the taxes are taken to pay the government and the rest is distributed to all the staff, from dishwashers, cleaners, maintenance staff, kitchen staff and the largest percentage goes to the waitresses. The owner does not take anything from the gratuities except to pay the taxes as it is declared as income. If the customer wishes to leave an extra small something for the waitress, it goes directly to them. It saddens me that you left here misinformed regarding the gratuity as we strive to make sure all staff are taken care of fairly in order for Leverick Bay to be a pleasant place for all to work. I would very much like to explore your situation further: here is my email address and I look forward for discussing this with you further to put your mind at ease. catharina@leverickbayrestaurant.com. Regards, Catharina Marcelissen - General Manager
