“Great Service, clean rooms”
Reviewed June 27, 2011

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here, June 2011. We stayed in Star Fruit. The service was exceptional from the moment we inquired about accommodations until the end of our trip. Michelle, Chris and Nadia were immediately responsive to all our (many) questions and continued to be helpful throughout our stay. They picked us up from the West End ferry dock, had our car waiting for us on arrival, gave recommendations of beaches, restaurants, etc. and were kind in the process. The car was clean and new and they allowed us to leave it at the ferry dock when we left the island for our final departure.

The villa was very clean, soft towels, new sheets, bath towels, and beach towels were brought in each day and the villa was swept and straightened. There is air conditioning in the bedroom but it did a poor job of cooling the entire villa. This isn't too much of a problem if you're out of the house most of the time. The grounds are quiet at night and we were not bothered by any other guests.

The restaurant at the clubhouse was perfect. The "continental breakfast" was anything but. The chef had different options every morning and it was all amazing. Breakfast burritos, homemade bacon, Island french toast, pancakes, etc, all done with exceptional taste. There was also coffee and a small juice included.

We have nothing but positive things to say about our time at Frenchmans. Wonderful experience.

Second vacation in Tortola and we are so happy that we found this boutique hotel - almost like having your own villa- early December is still off season - so it was like we had the resort to ourselves - this is the type of vacation we enjoy - you can really relax. As stated before the rooms were great - nicely appointed - and the restaurant just opened before we arrived so enjoyed daily breakfast and had a couple of dinners - which were all great . Paul and his staff did everything to ensure you enjoyed your dining experience as did the hotel staff Michelle and Chris who were always willing to accomodate your requests.
Yes the private beach/pool are small but with few other guests we almost always had the place to ourselves when we chose to spend the day at Frechmans.
You do need a car to get around the island to get a true feel of Tortola - it is not as developed as other Carribean Islands - which is just the way we like it - but you know that is going to change - but Frenchmans will continue to provide a relaxing getaway - we hope to make a return visit in the near future.

This resort has a very powerful advantage above many others - remoteness and you therefore encounter only a few other guests on the property and on the beach. You feel like this unique place of paradise just belongs to you! Absolute relaxation is a given! The attached restaurant also is worth a visit, nice setting, very friendly waiters, serve with a smile and some chats, the food very tasty and reasonably priced. I guess the best part is that every single picture of the resort portrait website was true and up-to-date - no deception of any kind. We stayed in the Passion Fruit villa and the design and layout of the villa was not only what we anticipated, but definitely surpassed our wildest dreams! We can highly recommend this hidden jewel and we'll come back one day - no doubt! Five star - hands down.

Well, there is always room for improvements, but compared with the overall experience these few things we noted are easy to fix. We thought that house-keeping could do a bit a better job in cleaning the villas (mopping the floors, dusting some closets and rims, cleaning the bathroom every day). We also wondered about the trash outside the beach area (but still within the property boundaries). Unfortunately we live now in the Antropocene, where people dump trash everywhere, and it often ends in the oceans too. So there are some plastic bottles and trash bits lying around the property cliffs still accessible to guests. This trash could fairly easily be removed (every day) and would make such a difference.

Room Tip: Most private is the Passion Fruit villa

My wife and I took a 1-year wedding anniversary trip to Frenchmans in early November, 2010. I'm about 8 months late in writing this review. While the weather didn't cooperate with our trip timing, this resort really made our stay great in Tortola. We stayed in one of the cottages which faced the little inlet and main island with a side view out east. The cottages themselves are great. They are small, but well-designed with the bedrooms upstairs and very cozy. The finishes and materials inside are very high end, but comfortable, not snooty feeling to us. We had a covered, tiled porch with comfortable seating that was great for relaxing and reading while watching the water and thunderstorms roll across the water.

The staff here is very friendly and because it was very slow during this time of year, it was almost like we had our own personal chef for breakfast every morning. The kitchen wasn't yet open for dinner yet with some outstanding permits to get, but I'm guessing this is now one of the better places on Tortola to eat. We rented a car to make a couple of day trips to Road Town and to Smuggler's Cover. We only found 1 restaurant that we really like in Road Town. The rest were just OK and casual food you could get anywhere. I would guess the Frenchmans dinners are the best bet on the western half of the island at least.

The beach isn't great here, but the views are very nice and the ambience is very relaxing with a friendly staff. They do have a very nice pool and deck that is comfortable. We took advantage of the kayaks and paddled around the channel and inlet during one of the days. We hit the tail end of a tropical storm, so it was cloudy much of the time and rained, but we still had a very good time. I'd recommend Frenchmans to anyone. We were planning to stay on St. John's at the Westin for 2 nights following our stay here, but due to the storm damage at the Westin, they gave us an out to stay on St. Thomas at the Ritz or Marriott. We opted for the Ritz which was also nice, but the small, cozy boutique feel of the Frenchmans was far better in our opinion to the large resort feel of the Ritz. If you have a family, you might like the larger resorts better, but the Frenchmans is very romantic for couples.

Room Tip: Choose an off-season if possible

From the moment Chris picked us up from the ferry dock until our checkout a week later, our Frenchmans experience was perfect! My husband and I chose the adventure package which included 1 day at Jost Van Dyke (ATV tour, lunch, and general hanging out on the beach and drinking painkillers!); 1 day on board the Aristocat for a daysail and snorkeling around Norman Island; a car rental that Frenchmans totally took care of (besides two quick phone calls to the company, Frenchmans did it all!); and a picnic basket FULL of goodies(hint: get the basket before your last full day there!) Breakfast was amazing, and our waitress Lou was so nice and cheerful when she greeted us each morning. We did eat the happy hour fish tacos a few times which were awesome, and dinner there was wonderful as well. Chef Paul was very nice, and even served us one morning with a smile on his face! Just a fantastic experience, and so convenient! Within walking distance to a nearby market, and Soper's Hole, Frenchmans was both secluded and convenient. We had a wonderful honeymoon and would recommend it to anyone!

Frenchman's was the perfect place to unplug and unwind. The cottages were well thought out and comfortable. It was nice to have a kitchen. The balcony had a wonderful view and the cocoon chairs were the best spot for reading. The restaurant/bar had a wonderful happy hour, delicious breakfasts (included) and a wonderful conch pasta (and other things) at dinner. It was a short walk to Soper's Hole Marina where there were several stores and restaurants. The hotel also rented a car for us as well as arranged for a wonderful day sail/snorkel trip with Aristocat Charters, which was fantastic.
