My family and I visited Tortola on the Carnival Valor cruise recently. We networked with other cruisers to find out what to do. Once we ported at Tortola we walked to the ferry boat building it only took 5-10 minutes enough time to catch the first ferry leaving at 7:45 a.m.. For $38 per person with Speedy's it paid for our round trip ferry ride and shuttle to and from Virgin Gorda. We got to the Virgin Gorda Bath so early that we didn't have to pay the $3 per person entry fee. We enjoyed the Bath, Devil's Bay beach and Stone Creek. We caught the shuttle at 11:30 a.m. because we still wanted to shop in Tortola and it gave us enough time to board the Carnival Valor by no later than 3 p.m. We probably could've stayed until 12:30 p.m. but we didn't want to take any chances of missing the boat. That was the best choice we made and would do it again if we ever visit Tortola again, it's well worth it. We especially want to thanked the young lady at the private Inn in Antigua for suggesting the Virgin Gorda. Also, Mike and Lisa from Florida our fellow cruiser for encouraging us to be adventurous with them.

If you're afraid of heights stay on the ship. We took this tour on a cruise ship visit. The island was very beautiful and very mountainous. Very steep roads, lots of driving up and down, but it didn't bother us, we still had a good time. At the end of the tour we stopped at the beach for 2 hours. The water was a bit rough but still a very enjoyable experience.

We got off the cruise ship and were hounded by drivers and their representatives, trying to get us to take a highlights tour. It's good that we didn't take their offer. They don't leave until the jitney is full and we would have had to wait for other people to join us. We continued to walk towards town. Another jitney bus came along and needed two people; we were it. The other riders applauded because with our filling the jitney, they could now take their tour. We circled the island, had photo stops at several places, and were at a beach for one hour. There are many photo opps on this highlights tour. We were told the tour would take two hours but our driver gave us a three-hour tour. The only negative is that it is sometimes difficult to get into and out of the jitney.

Got off the cruise ship and right outside the port is a line of open sided seat buses. There was bus for the beach and then there are those for island tour. Confirm the price at $20 per person we hop on one designated for island tour and once full - took less than 10 minutes wait, off we go on a 3.5 hours tour.

The tour went to various view points which has great scenaries of the island beaches, hills and water. The driver-tour guide thru the truck's microphone-speakers was very informative about Tortola and the surrounding islands. The roads are at times steep where the tour truck appear to strain itself to climb certain road with almost 40 deg slope. Stopped at the only rum factory called Callwood Rum Distiller where anyone can sample rum made for $1 a shot.

The tour included a stop off at Cane Garden Bay for about 30 minutes. Here fresh coconut juice is available for $5 and rum punch available for $7 for two glass. We went for the highly recommended rum drink called painkiller. This beach is alive with bars, cafes and souvenir stalls. After Cane garden, it was short ride along the coastal road back to the cruise ship port.

We went on an island tour with spectacular views ending at the beach for an hour for $15. Don't forget the rum.
