We took a cruise excursion from St. Thomas to Dolphin Discovery Tortola.

The ferry each way was just over 1 hour. One way of which was enjoyable on a high speed catamaran. The other way was a very noisy ride on rather old boat(Speedy Ferry).

Once in Tortola we quickly cleared BVI customs and immigration and took a 5 minute bus ride to the Dolphin Discovery.

At first glance the place looks like a dump. Faded signage and a rather dilapidated looking main building.

Looks aside the Dolphin Adventure Swim was amazing. We spent approximately 30 minutes in the lagoon with a Dolphin (Kiss, Ride, Sing, Hug etc). The water was very clear and the Lagoon area was in fairly good condition.

Following the swim we had just under an hour to wait before our bus ride back to the Port in Tortola. So, we purchased the picture package with CD of all the pictures taken in our party. The pricing is determined by the number of people in your party. Beware it's not cheap!

We also had lunch at the Snack Bar. Their menu of approximately 10 items really only consisted of Burgers and chicken nuggets. They were either out of other items or they just didn't offer them anymore. Communication skills of the staff at the Snack Bar was less than stellar.

Aside from the visual appearance of the property, we really enjoyed the experience and I would recommend it to friends and family.

Can't believe some of the reviews on this site. This was an amazing experience! We were on a cruise ship and swam with two dolphins (Maggie and Keppler) for 30 minutes in a group of 8 (hardly crowded). It was sufficient time to swim, stroke, kiss, be pulled, be pushed, sing, hand shake and play football with the dolphins. Our guide, Bingly, briefed us on a hour boat trip from the cruise ship to Tortola about the Dolphins and the surrounding area so we knew all about sun cream, photo's, jewellery etc. The trainer was also very knowledgeable about the Dolphins and answered any questions that we had. Overall it was an amazing experience but I do take on-board about the security / lockers and changing room. That said, our guide was sat in the area of the lockers whilst we were in the water so it would have been very difficult for anyone to get to our bags.

My wife has always wanted to swim with dolphins, so on our latest cruise i booked this trip independently. My first tip is book this trip yourself. I got the Royal Swim package on a buy one get one free basis working out at $149us for the two of us.
We arrived early as we were on a cruise, this again was a good move as there was only the two of us there, we were booked in for 10am but ended up getting in the water around 9:30am.
The dolphin programme was much the same as any other, with toe pushes, dorsel fin tows, kisses, waves etc.
I felt the pens were smaller that other places i had been, that said the dolphins appeared alert, playful and their skin in good condition unlike some i have seen.
I was a little disappointed that there was no briefing beforehand. No reminder not to wear suncream or jewellery, also no safety brief on where to touch the dolphin and more importantly where not to touch them i.e. the blow hole!
There was of course a photo package for sale. We plumped for the CD of the photos, we got around 100 photos on the disc for $100, in fairness we have a good number of useable images and it was certainly cheaper than the other option of one photo for $25us.
The changing facilities are primative and there are no secure lockers to put your stuff in whilst you swim and when you bear in mind this place shares its grounds with the local court you can understand the type of people who may be wandering around!
Overall we enjoyed the trip. There were two of us with two dolphins so we got plenty of time with them, however more time needs to be spent briefing people. The changing rooms need updating too.

Make sure you go on a slow day (no cruise ships). My boyfriend and I swam with the dolphins last week for my 30th birthday. We took a ferry from St. Thomas on a Saturday & swam with the dolphins at 12pm.

We were so fortunate because it was not busy at all so the 2 of us got to spend 30 minutes interacting with the dolphins with no one else but the trainers!

We did the royal swim and it was amazing. This is not your typical, get in a pool with 50 other tourists and the dolphin kisses you...You're in actual ocean water and swimming with the dolphins. Once in a lifetime experience!

I'm getting to be a bit of a pro at this dolphin swim and I have to say the facility in Tortola was small and sort of dirty. Right near the sewage drop in the ocean which was nasty.
