My emails from Marjorie Smith told me that we would take the Saturday ferry @ 3:30 p.m. to Tortola, since we were arriving by flight @ 2:40 p.m. There is no 3:30 ferry! We missed rendezvousing with our relatives who left on the 3:00 p.m. ferry. We caught the 5:00 p.m. instead. It was a rickety old skow, which barely seemed sea worthy. Marjorie told us their 2nd ferry had broken down. On our return, Marjorie told us to leave Tortola on the 9:15 a.m. ferry the following Saturday. There is no 9:15 a.m. ferry! Her Tortola reps told us the ferry left @ 10;00 a.m. and that we were mistaken. At this point I showed them the emails from Marjorie. No comment on their behalf. When I did not see any Smith's ferry heading to Tortola around 10:00, I asked the same rep. where the ferry was, and he replied that he did not tell me 10:00, he said it would leave @ 10:30. At 10:30 when no Smith's ferry was in sight, they put us on a Performance ferry instead. We were again told that their ferry had broken down. My relatives missed their flight out of St. Thomas due to Smith's lies and incompetence. Dozens of other tourists also missed their flights. If you want to completely stress yourself out at the beginning and end of your ferry trip to and from Tortola, reserve your seat with Smith's ferry!! From my observations over the past week, I will book with Native Son next time!

Nothing like getting out of a taxi on a chaotic travel day(Saturday after Thanksgiving) to get verbally assaulted by the Smiths Ferry carnival barker screaming/lying that their POS boat will get me to St Thomas BEFORE all his competitors. He lied. The boat stopped in Frenchman's Cay Customs Office to pick up passengers while those of us on the top deck BAKED in the hot sun stewing over the lying SOB who hussled us. Needless to say we came in behind the other boat...which put us about 200th in line to go thru customs. Smiths Ferry is a bunch of lying thieves. WHATEVER THE GUY SAYS AT THE DOCK...HE IS LYING!!! DO NOT USE SMITHS FERRY!!!!!

There are many great things about the islands that differ from stateside life. Customer service at Smith's Ferry is not one of them.
In April 2010 I bought a round trip ticket from Charlotte-Amalie, St Thomas to West End, Tortola because it was cheaper than two one way tickets. I paid $52. The staff "stamped" it and gave it to me for boarding. The boat guy who helped me on took the part of the ticket he needed for the one way to Tortola and told me, without me asking, the other part was for the return and the adjoined piece was my receipt.
A week later I tried to board the return ferry in Tortola with the remainder one way ticket I had saved and was told by the ferry staff there that it was no good because it had been "stamped" already and that I needed to buy another one-way ticket for $30 from the local ferry service desk there in Tortola and take up the issue with Smith's ferry service when I got to St Thomas.
I proceeded to Smith's ferry service in St Thomas with one hour before my plane was to leave to try to get compensation for the ticket I could not use. The woman on duty, the daughter of the owner, told me there was no way she could refund the money as she had no way of knowing if I was trying to get money from a used ticket.?? The best she could do was to issue me a new one way ticket good for six months. I told her I was not coming back in six months. I told her I didn't really know what the logistics were on her end but I bought a RT ticket in good faith assuming the business knew how to "stamp" the ticket appropriately so that I could use it to come back and now I am charged an extra $30 because of some stamp problem that was not my responsibility.
She told me that's all she could do and when I told her I was an unhappy customer who would be voicing my dissatisfaction online she issued me a "WHATEVER!".
When purchasing a round trip ticket make sure your return portion is NOT stamped with a blue manual stamp or you will not be able to use it.

Marjorie Smith of Smith's ferry arranged our land transportation between Trellis Bay and St. Thomas, and we (foolishly) paid in advance. On our return trip, there was no cab to meet us in Trellis Bay as promised and we were told when we called, that no one was available. We paid someone to drive us to Road Town and learned that there was no ferry at the time given to us in writing. When we were not willing to accept an alternate plan that the Smith's ferry ticket agent proposed, that would have had us likely to miss our flight, the ticket agent became belligerent and came out from her desk, shouting at us! We paid for the next boat on Speedy's ferrry. The employees of Speedy's were pleasant and helpful. I am planning to return to BVI but I will never use Smith's ferry again.
