“Perfect for the Low Maintenance Folks”
Reviewed April 7, 2009

Rhymer's was perfect for travelers who only require a comfortable, clean bed, a warm shower and a toilet while staying in the Caribbean. Unlike other reviewers, our towels were clean and smelled just fine. Our shower had unlimited hot water with so much pressure that it could have pushed me into the opposite wall. I am paranoid about hotel beds anyway, and always do a search for signs of bed bugs. Nothing like that here. The beds were very clean and very comfortable. When one of the most beautiful beaches on Tortola is mere steps away, why would you need anything else?

It is true that the hotel doesn't have much curb appeal. It's painted a bright pink, as if it's been hosed down in Pepto Bismol. But so what? The reception lady was always pleasant and the restaurant is just fine (try the Conch Fritters - the best on Cane Garden Bay).

My girlfriend and I spent three days on Tortola. We had a great time. The first day we basically had the entire beach to ourselves. The second day we awoke to an overcast morning and took a taxi ($26 each way for two people...which is very expensive if you can't get a group together) to Road Town for a bit of shopping. The hills in Tortola are even worse than St. John so if you are faint of heart about driving up massive inclines (no guardrails) then maybe you should think twice about renting a car and go the expensive route (Taxi). On the third morning, it was great weather AND a cruise ship day. It was amusing to watch the beach transform into something you would see on a postcard. Rows and rows of chairs and umbrellas (the umbrella's cost $5 per day on a cruise ship day, regardless if you are patronizing the hotel or not).

We found Ryhmer's to be the cheapest restaurant on the beach. We also visited Myett's which was very pretty and very good and also, very expensive (count on at least $30 per entree, salad not included).

We would definitely visit Rhymer's again. The lodging was dirt cheap compared to other hotels in the islands, and the view is spectacular!

I love Rhymers and have been coming here for years. It is the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean and the rates are truly affordable for all. Why would you be here if you worry about whether or not the room is perfect, whether they have Cable TV, how long the electricity is on/off. This is classic island life, you live with small inconveniences but never notice because you are in a tropical paradise.

If you believe the room is just a place to crash and keep your luggage, then this is the place for you. Cane Garden Bay is wonderful, it may be busy when a cruise ship is in town, but they all leave by 4pm and you and your fellow travelers have this secret place to yourself. The staff is great, they get up at sunrise and make coffee - serve yourself and sit and enjoy the quiet of the morning on the bay. They will be back in a short while to begin breakfast. The roosters are out front by the road and after the first day you will find they are like a snooze button, lightly wakening you and then putting you back to sleep for a few extra winks. Explore the island, get a local taxi to run you round, spend the day exploring or rent a car. There are lots of unique waterfront restaurants all around Tortola - get out and find them on your own. Grocery store is a short walk south and the bakery a short walk north. Take a day trip to Jost. I usually go in the summer and bugs have never been a problem.

For the best island experience, fly to St Thomas and take the Native Son (green boat)ferry to Tortola. You can snub your nose at all the sheep being loaded onto the cruise ships in the harbour as you begin your private journey. Yes, the electric goes out once in awhile, just like any other remote island, so just grab a Painkiller and grab your book and a beach chair and enjoy LIFE!

If this isnt you, go to Orlando and stay at a plastic resort.

The hotel- DUMP, no hot water, beds had more springs coming out of them than a pogo stick. Staff were very friendly and the place was clean- but still a dump. Now- the beach, the whole bay in fact was beautiful, great views, several good restaurants you can stroll to and great bars right on the water- if you don't mind cold showers and broken beds then go for it, the prices are good- as far as the roosters, they need to have few scheduled hunts to thin out the flock, they crow 24hours a day.

we stayed for one night. i was nothing spectacular. it had a very small kitchenette. the door to the bathroom stuck, the toilet lid was broken, and the louvers to the door were broken. that being said everything was clean, and the lady was very nice. i would stay again but people should keep in mind before they decide to stay that this is the cheapest hotel on the water in cane garden bay so dont expect a whole lot and you will be very happy. oh and the guy that did the review with cock a doodle doo is spot on. that rooster startd at around 0530 and continued well into 0900. its all part of the experience

well...the place had a certain charm on the beach which was very pretty with lovely views of sunset...but almost impossible to sleep more then a few hours..so if you would like a party environment and an early am wake-up by the roosters it is a cool spot..if you are like us and want just a bit more quiet/sleep..try elsewhere..or plan to be tired!

Some friends and I have been going to Ryhmers since 1999 (some since 1989). I introduced my wife (then girlfriend) to the great Cane Garden Bay a few years ago and even proposed to her on the beach near De Wedding. We were married on the top balcony of Rhymers overlooking Cane Garden Bay the year after I proposed. We love the staff, they are always friendly and will help you out anyway they can (and were more than accommodating for our wedding and some even joined us during the ceremony). The rooms are nice and clean with clean sheets and towels every day. Tortola is the best place to get away and just relax. We have suggested to many people to take their vacation down here where the beach is absolutely beautiful, white sand; clear, turquoise water, we can't wait to go back next year.

If you want a hotel on one of the nicest beaches stay at Rhymers. The hotel is not five star by any means, but was clean and had air conditioning, a full bed and twin, balcony and a kitchenette. The best part is you walk right outside to beautiful Cane Garden Beach. The price is wonderful, about $100 a night in season and less after Easter. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Got us taxies whenever we wanted one. The room was cleaned every day with fresh towels. Lots of hot water too. So what, the ceiling fan didn’t work and we had to jiggle the balcony door a little to open it. We wanted beach and this was it. The beach was so beautiful we canceled one of our day trips to stay on the beach. The beach is in a protected cove and has a few cruising sailboats on moorings, with beautiful hillsides surrounding, and you can see some of the other islands in the distance.

Rhymers also has a restaurant. We had breakfast there every day and was not fancy but had the usual eggs, bagles, french toast, etc. and all was fine. There is also a small general store.

Up and down the beach are several other restaurants/bars to visit. Almost every night one of the establishments has live music. When I was there Myetts, just down from Rhymers, had a retired US teacher playing wonderful Jimmy Buffet. I ate at Myetts twice and both were wonderful. Fresh snapper and tuna. They also had huge lobsters.
The beach felt very safe and comfortable to stroll along at night. The whole beach is owned by different Rhymer family members who have owned it for many years.

If you decide to stay here be sure to ask when cruiseship day is. That is when they taxi in a LOT of cruise ship passengers so the beach is pretty crowded. But still plenty of chairs for everyone. Just use that day for your island tour or a ferry to one of the other nearby islands. We took a day sail with White Squall II, they have a website and it was a perfect day. Went snorkeling at Norman island, had lunch on the famous Willie T, and all we could drink on board. White Squall is a 70 year old wooden sailing ship, has been somewhat renovated for day sails. At one time had been used as a minesweeper in the New York harbor during WWII.

I’ve been to Tortola several times and so far Rhymers at Cane Garden Beach is my favorite.
