My husband and I just got back from 5 days at the Long Bay Beach resort and had a great time. When we arrived at the resort, we were greeted right away and were given maps to the resort, room keys and a welcome rum punch that was delicious! The room was a deluxe hillside room (room 214) and had a wonderful view of the beach and Jost Van Dyke. The pool is nice and has a good swim up bar and snacks. The beach is great , but the water in front of the resort is quite rocky. We went far to the left from the resort and found the water a bit more welcoming. We read some other reviews and expected this though so no problems. The room was a nice size with a fridge which kept our water and Carib lager ready at all times.

Since we were only on the island for a few days, we did not do too much in the way of activities. The Dive shop can take you on afternoon snorkeling trips for about $100 per couple-we won a trip at the manager's reception but it was right when we left so we could not go and passed it on to some other guests. The food at 1748 is good, but make sure you check with the front desk to find out what they are serving each night as it changes. We did go shopping in Road Town, not too much there but a nice little excursion that costs $20 per couple round trip.

All in all, a clean, spacious room with an amazing view and some of the most friendly people we have ever met! We would definitely go back for more.

A Beautiful setting and tastefully designed, 2 and 3 storey wooden villa style rooms set on the beach or in the hillside.... but the extra you pay for a beachfront deluxe isnot worth it. Deluxe they are not, you are paying for the location by the beach, but the view is only from a top floor room (if you're lucky) the rooms are very old fashioned and in serious need of refurbishment. The Hillside standard rooms(just off the pool) are newly refurbished and have great views down the hillside towards the ocean.
Service is typically Caribean, slow and sometimes very unhelpful. If you have a problem go stgraight to a manager.
Buffet breakfast isnot worth the $18 go straight from the menu.
This is a pure chill and do nothing resort, if you want to get around...hire a jeep works out cheaper, but not from the resort, you pay for the convenience. Island roads can be scary, sometimes not for the faint hearted a roller coaster ride all the way.
Swimming in the sea, rocky next to resort, wear reef shoes or walk 100m down the beach where its not so rocky and the waves not so strong.
From what we saw of other hotel/resorts on Tortola, by far the prettiest.
Enjoy your Holiday, we did, sailing is the only way to see and appreciate all the islands.

My wife and I have traveled often to the Caribbean. At first, we were hesitant about visiting Long Bay Beach Resort because of some reviews that we had read. However, having enjoyed another Elite Island Resort property, Galley Bay on Antigua, we decided to give it a try.

We arrived a day late due to an April snowstorm in Buffalo, NY. Although our travel agent spoke with the resort to inform them of this, we STILL expected a hassle. We NEVER got one.

The Front Desk/Reception was very sympathetic and even adjusted our travel dates so that we could STILL stay a full week! No one was rude or indifferent; all that they ever asked for was a little patience. Despite our delay, all of our paperwork was in order and we checked in without a hitch. Our luggage was removed to our room before our first glass of Island Rum punch could arrive!

Our Beach Front room DID have some wear on it. The tiled floor DID have some mildew staining on the grout and the Air Conditioner should be replaced. But the room was adequate, efficient, and clean. The Maid Service was thorough and non-invasive. The “Foot Bath” at the room’s entrance helped to reduce sand in the room and was a nice touch as was the coffee maker and small kitchenette. I don’t know if the TV worked; it didn’t much matter to us! I’m not even sure where it was in the room! But the view and the sound of the surf were EXACTLY what we had hoped for! We weren’t planning on spending too much time in the room anyway.

Long Bay is set up on a hillside, so expect plenty of climbing, but the resort is laid-back, relaxed, and quiet. Go there for that!

The surf was fairly and consistently rough all along the sugary-textured, ¾- mile sand beach. This didn’t stop people from body surfing or Boogie Boarding, however. We don’t swim so this was not a big deal. Although it was “against the law,” nude sun-worshiping could be practiced at the far end of the beach.

Even though this is a public beach, there were NO “Beach Vendors.” The lounge chairs were for the resort guests, but everyone used them. We never had trouble with availability, though. Beach towels were no problem, either. I would anticipate problems with chairs when the resort was full. They need more! Policing the situation to ensure that chairs were available for “Guests Only” would be a noble gesture, but a pain.

The food was very good, especially ANYTHING fresh from the sea and hot off the grill! We NEVER were hungry, but we went “all-inclusive”. The bars “officially” operated from 11 AM to 11 PM. But, I could ALWAYS get a spicy Bloody Mary at any hour of the morning AND champagne (even if it was Andre’s) was available for Mimosa’s, too! By asking NICELY, I was never denied a “night cap” to walk the beach, EVEN IF IT WAS AFTER CLOSING. Just be considerate and discreet!

There was no “night life” at the resort to speak of with minimal evening entertainment. You will be disappointed if you are expecting fire-eaters and steel-drum bands. We did not venture out at night, but would have felt comfortable doing so.

We did take a cab to hike at the beautiful Sage Mountain National Park one day. We also traveled to Road Town and the Botanical Gardens. The fares were $18 each way PER COUPLE and well worth it. There was no “Straw Market” or hassling vendors or panhandlers and we felt perfectly safe wandering around on our own.

One of the things we enjoyed best about the resort was the employees! They were VERY happy with the new management, which seemed to reflect in their attitudes. They were VERY good at anticipating our needs and requests and GENUINELY made us feel welcome.

We would return to Tortola and Long Bay Beach Resort in a heartbeat!

We had a great stay at LBBR from April 10-17th. Here are some thoughts on our first trip to the Caribbean.

We booked a beachfront deluxe room. We walked into one with two double beds instead of a King bed…a little disappointing because they knew we were on our Honeymoon. The bathrooms in the deluxe beachfront are not nice at all. The cabinets are pretty gross too (at least we could use the other bed to store our clothes on). All of this makes you think you could get the same room at Seaside Heights, NJ…not what you want for a Honeymoon. So the next day we went to see if we could get a room with a king bed and a nicer bathroom. The front desk was EXTREMELY helpful and said none of the Beachfronts have nice bathrooms, would we like a villa 1-bedroom above the pool? I was nervous asking for a room change because of the service reviews on this board but had nothing but great service from the front desk. So we went to check the room out with Charles (who couldn’t have been nicer to help us out). We walked to the third floor of a family villa and stepped into a gorgeous room! I think the villas can be rented per floor or the whole thing building if you’re bringing a large family. We had a Jacuzzi tub and kitchenette with fridge and micro- all very clean. You felt like you could definitely walk barefoot in this room as opposed to the beachfront! Please don’t waste your time paying for the deluxe beachfront- while it’s priced the highest this isn’t reflected in the quality of the room.

We had the adventure package, which is the best way to go. I think the rooms are more expensive without that package than with it, and you get two trips and meals! So we ate breakfast every morning at 1748 but it was no-where near $17 worth for the buffet…but if you’re on a package go for it! We also had 4 dinners and spent half at 1748 and half at the Palm Terrace. Both were nice, but faster service at 1748. The hostess at the Palm Terrace is delightful though. We also ate at Sebastians (terribly long wait and my fish was really dry) Sugar Mill (excellent!) and Bananakeet (this was my favorite- huge lobster and the best filet mignon my husband ever ate, all while watching the sunset). We ate lunch by the pool bar often and loved Gemma and Suzanne.

We took a day trip to St. John’s- keep your ferry receipts until you check out!!
We also went on the White Squall II to The Baths and Cooper Island. It was fun to see but I wish we took the trip to The Indians for better snorkeling. Definitely rent a jeep from the onsite renters and explore on your own. There are taxis for everything but you’ll get more done in a day if you drive yourself.

Overall keep in mind that service will be slow, but if you are pleasant to the staff they are more likely to be pleasant in return.

Most Important... Several reviews suggest NOT renting an oceanfront room. We couldn't disagree more. We visited other rooms and ours was superior, by far. (Don't get the bungalows on stilts, get an actual room.) It was large, with a big covered deck. What views!!! And we were lulled to sleep by the surf each night. Our stay would not have been the same had we NOT had an oceanfront room. And, it certainly did NOT smell fishy or salty or musty. It was wonderful.

We WOULD recommend this resort, so long as you set your expectations appropriately!

So we were very happy with our room, and the views!!! We worked with the Dive Shop there (friendly and helpful) and the on-premises car rental agencies (quick and nice!)... we'd highly recommend both. The Guest Services staff was helpful in arranging our dolphin swim and White Squall outing to Norman & Cooper Islands (don't miss it).

However, prepare to be laid back and overlook some other "issues" at the resort. The service is just plain bad... generally slow and apathetic, though you do meet the occasional attentive staffer. The food is below average... breakfasts are good and the Palm Terrace occasionally performs. Order desserts at your own risk... we found each one to be inedible. (Coco Plums is a short walk and very yummy!) Skip the spa services; they're not relaxing. The pool is not great. And, if you plan on using the fitness center, bring a towel from your room. It's humid... you'll sweat and chances are you won't be supplied with a towel.

Tortola and surrounding islands are just stunning, and this resort is in a serene, beautiful location. We found the physical beauty of Long Bay beach to greater than that of its much-heralded neighbor, Smugglers Cove.

Came to Long Bay after 4 days in St. Thomas. When we got there, we were told we had no reservation and that it had been cancelled 3 months prior by the travel agent. Needless to say we went through the roof (this was our honeymoon) and became very upset / angry. The staff was unable to tell us exactly how it had gotten cancelled, but they handled the situation in a very professional manner. Needless to say we were a bit impatient and short with them, but Teresita at the front desk was very patient with us, understood why were so upset, and booked us into an available room.

Unfortunately, the beachfront cabana we thoguht we were getting was taken, so we were hillside, which was still very nice, with a great view. Two days later, the front desk called w/ news that they could move us down to a beachfront that had just opened up. The rest of the week they joked us w/ us that we looked much happier. At the end of the week, the travel agent had been contacted and straightened the situation out with Long Bay, and the bill showed a balance of $-0- . A nice end to the week.

As far as the resort, we were very pleased. The pool area was nice, with a good swim up bar (and a great bartender Cheryl). Good sandwiches and snacks available there.

The meals we ate at the resorts various restaurants were very good, with the Tuesday night Italian being the best.

The rooms were good, not great. They were generally clean and in working order. The fridge worked well, TV did not, but is TV really that important in the islands?

The beach was also very good, not very crowded, with gorgeous views. The one negative is the rocky coast. Don't expect to spend hours wading in the surf, unless you've got shoes on.

Overall though, we had a great time and the staff (Teresita, Cheryl, Alan, etc) were very nice and very helpful at all time. Especially considering the difficult situation at the beginning of the trip. If you are not a super high end resort dweller, I would definitley recommend it.

Several great restaurants in walking distance....Cocoa Plums and Sebastians were both excellent. We went to Bombas as well, but I can't remember anything about it, other than Johnny Bomba and Big Sexy. Haha.

My husband and I just returned from a week long stay at Long Bay Resort in Tortola. The resort is in a wonderful area of the island and has a pristine beach. If you walk to the end, it's almost totally private and it's great for swimming. Service was moderate and our view from our hillside deluxe room was gorgeous! Our room had a kitchen which was very helpful. We ate breakfast and made lunch almost every day. If you grocery shop, use the two in Sopers Hole Marina since they are MUCH closer than driving to Cane Garden Bay. We ate at the Sugar Mill Restaurant which had excellent service and food was excellent. We took the White Squall to the Baths and Cooper Island...loved the staff!! We also took a catamaran out 2 days with other couples we met at our resort and we used Captain Nibbs at Island Fun. He's highly recommended as well! Jost Van Dyke was a fun day and just being there made us wish we never had to leave! I'd return to this resort again...it was very relaxing and all we wanted. The BVI in general is absolutely breathtaking!!! Only negative thing I have to say is - don't eat at Sebastian's. The food was overcooked and the service was terrible!
