“short stay excursion from St. Thomas”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

This year we decided to ferry over to Tortolla from St. Thomas. We booked The Long Bay Beach Resort for one night. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was large and clean. The beds were not the most comfortable but for one night it was fine. Overall we were very pleased with the resort. The pool was nice and quiet. The beach was beautiful and very quiet. I would recommend this property for a honeymoon as you felt like you were all alone in Paradise. The restaurant on site was good for breakfast and dinner. No need to go anywhere else if you don't want to rent a car or take expensive cab rides.

Room Tip: We had the poolside room. If you cant walk up steep hills don't go to this resort unless you sta...

On business in Tortola for 1 week. Was upgraded for free to the beach front room. Beach was beautiful and clean. Room was large and had plenty of amenities. The only problem with the room was that each day the maid turned off the A/C, so once you got back in the evening you had to run the A/C full blast for a couple of hours to cool down the room. Beware the roads and speed bumps in Tortola, they can take out the bottom of the standard rental car. Overall, good stay, especially beach walks and runs in the morning.

I stayed here with a purchase of a deal through bloomspot. Great deal. Which is why i cant rate value fairly.

The folks couldn't do enough for us.
We are NE Patriot fans & they spent 1/2 trying to find the game on their satellite tv

There are many stairs ( FYI). I counted 78 to get to our room. Which was only partly up the hill. Tortola is very hilly

I also found (confusing) that there's a dive shop that offers day trips ( on the premises ) but you can also get them from the hotel which is cheaper & the hotels price includes transportation to sopers hole where you get the boats. The dive shop doesn't inc that ($30 RT taxi)

I will have to put that in another review because I'm going tomorrow

I would return. Love the people

Ok, so you have decided to go to Tortola. An excellent choice if you desire a small, clean low keyed island with relatively unspoiled and uncrowded beaches. Here you will find the peace and quite you seek, uncluttered by large resorts or large numbers vacationers. Now, where to stay?

This is the easy part, made so in part by the limited number of options available. There are two components in my opnion on needs to consider when evaluating this decision; one is the location, and the other is the resort/inn/hotel itself.

Let's start with the location. Long Bay offers the best beach on the entire island. Why? Because it is the longest stretch of beach there is. It is the iconic beach scene for the island, found in more tourist publications and brochures than any other on the entire island. It is long and straight in front of the resort, and continues so until it bends inward at the end, where there is a bay before the mountain rise. This beach- I believe a mile in legnth- guarantees that one will assuredly be able to find plenty of room to set up camp on the beach without any neighbors in the vicinity, but is also the very best place to stroll along the water's edge due to it's legnth.

You will find coral out in the water; the downside to this is you need to take care when choosing where to swim. The upside is that if you want to take a snorkle mask and float around, there are wonderful fishes and things to see underwater if you go out a short way.

The location of the beach is on the far end of the island, the quiet side. There is nothing with in walking distance, really, so renting a car is a must here. Of course, this contributes to it's quietude, as there is nothing to draw people here, other than the beach itself- which really doesn't have excellent public access.

The second consideration, the place itself, is also an easy choice in Tortola. There are a number of expensive places to choose from, all nice I'm sure. This is the only place that bills itself as a resort on the island. Of course, this is not a resort like on the more developed islands you may have been to; yes, there is a pool, and a tiki bar and grill poolside... but it is otherwise limited in ammenities.

There are two choices on offer here; small duplexes literally on the beach, which were the original units. If I were to go back, I would chose to stay in these the second go around. They are little more than wooden cabins, really, and I fear the bugs may be something to contend with as well, but stepping off of your deck onto the sand would be a trade off I would take for that.

The second choice was where I stayed, in the newer buildings snaking their way up the hill on the other side of the road. These are modern, offer a/c, full kitchens, and are quite nice. Ours had a good view of the water from both floors- it was a two floor unit, second and third floor. There was a unit below as well. Two decks; one off of the kitchen, one from the second floor master bedroom.

The units themselves were beautiful and would definately appeal to those looking for a more comfortable stay ( the beach duplexes are quite ruff... ). They are near the pool as well. However, they were a walk to the water, perhaps 5 minutes or so. This is the key decision that each person must weigh for themselves; a nicer, newer room by the pool, or an older, rougher place on the beach.

While the number of units are large by Tortola standards, I never really felt the presence of other guests intrusive at all; often there were none to be found. The pool was seldom used my more than a few sets of other guests, and the beach the same way.

Although expensive, this is a great choice for Tortola. It is really the only one if you want to be on this beach anyhow, so even if it were inferior, I would still chose it.

Enjoy~

we went to tortola 7 years ago and was checking out long bay as we drove by it...so glad we stayed there this time. The people were great, the rooms are clean, and the setting is wonderful. We rented a car which provides alot more freedom (you get it and drop it right at the airport, very easy)Although 4 wheel drive is better. It's at the west end of the island..Highly suggest if you are into snorkling or diving to get a boat (ours was the jost van dyke with captian martian) and see the caves, the indians, and thatch island if possible. There are different resturants you can try although the food at long bay is nothing to complain about. hiking is also wonderful. We did sage mountian on the island which is more rain forest, but we also took a ferry over to Jost Van Dyke and hiked to the summit of that island (tower on top is the summit) great veiws.when you head down you'll see the wide trail to the right..that goes around the other side of the island. it's a beautiful hike nothing but veiws and wild goats..Overall we had a blast the 2nd week of oct. is still the low season so there was nobody around (which works well for us)

Room Tip: all rooms are fine, some are right on the ocean and some are up into the hill side closer to the poo...

I stayed 4 nights at this resort. It was pretty quite when we were there. It is right on the a pretty beach. The ocean front rooms are huge, especialy the bathrooms. The Pool side rooms are not as big, but have a kitchenette. The restaurant 1748 is very good. The dinner choices are limited though, but still delicious. I was a little disappointed that the bar and spa were not opened when we were there. The staff is friendly and helpful, although check in is very slow. I stayed on 2 occasions and it took over 20 min to check in even though there was no one waiting. It is nice to hear the ocean waves at night. Do not hesitate to stay here

We stayed here on our second trip to the VI's and loved it. We prefer the BVI's to the USVI's just because it's less crowded. We always go during high season but are treated here like it's low season and they're ecstatic to have us! The rooms are very nice and clean, the restaurant is great, the pool bar is awesome, yes, I used the water slide and I'm in my 30's, and the people were great. I love the rec room. We played pool and board games while sipping cocktails...can you say awesome! I just booked it today for February again, getting a rate $70 less than what is on their website.
